It is a truth 真理 universally 普遍的 acknowledged 确认, that a single 单一的 man in possession 所有物 of a good for‧tune 命运, must be in want of a wife 妻子.

However little known know the feelings or views 看法 of such a man may be on his first entering 进入 a neighbourhood, this truth 真理 is so well fixed 固定 in the minds of the surrounding 包围 families, that he is considered the rightful property 特性 of some one or other of their daughters 女儿.

“My dear 亲爱的 Mr. Bennet,” said his lady 女士 to him one day, “have you heard hear that Netherfield Park 公园 is let at last?”

Mr. Bennet replied 回答 that he had not.

“But it is,” returned 回转 she; “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told tell me all about it.”

Mr. Bennet made no answer 答复.

“Do you not want to know who has taken it?” cried 哭，叫喊 his wife 妻子 impatiently 不耐烦.

“You want to tell me, and I have no objection 反对 to hearing it.”

“Why, my dear 亲爱的, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large for‧tune 命运 from the north 北方 of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted 快乐 with it, that he agreed 同意 with Mr. Morris immediately 立即，马上; that he is to take possession 所有物 before Michaelmas, and some of his servants 仆人 are to be in the house by the end of next week.”

“What is his name?”

“Bingley.”

“Is he married 结婚 or single 单一的?”

“How so? How can it affect 影响 them?”

“ Depend 依靠 upon it, my dear 亲爱的, that when there are twenty 二十, I will visit them all.”

Mr. Bennet was so odd 奇 a mixture 混合 of quick 快的 parts, sarcastic 讽刺的；挖苦的 humour, reserve 预订；保留, and cap‧rice 盖‧稻, that the experience of three-and-twenty 二十 years had been insufficient 不足 to make his wife 妻子 under‧stand 懂 his character 性格. Her mind was less little difficult 困难的 to develop. She was a woman of mean under‧stand 懂, little information, and uncertain 不确定 temper 性情. When she was discontented 不满, she fancied 想像 her‧self 她自己 nervous 担心的. The business of her life was to get her daughters 女儿 married 结婚; its solace was visiting 访问 and news 新闻.

Chapter 2

Mr. Bennet was among 之间 the earliest of those who waited 等候 on Mr. Bingley. He had always intended 意欲 to visit 访问 him, though to the last always assuring 向…保证；肯定地说 his wife 妻子 that he should not go; and till 到 the evening 傍晚 after the visit was paid pay she had no knowledge 知识；了解 of it. “To-morrow fort‧night 两星期.”

“I honour your circumspection. A fort‧night 两星期’s acquaintance 熟人 is certainly very little. One cannot know what a man really is by the end of a fort‧night 两星期. “While Mary is adjusting 改变；调节 her ideas 主意,” he continued, “let us return 回转 to Mr. Bingley.”

Chapter 3

In a few days Mr. Bingley returned 回转 Mr. Bennet’s visit 10, and sat 坐:sit about ten 十 minutes 分 with him in his library 图书馆. “Come, Darcy,” said he, “I must have you dance. I hate 仇恨 to see you standing about by your‧self 你自己 in this stupid 愚蠢的 manner 方式. You had much better well dance.”

Chapter 4

When Jane and Elizabeth were alone 单独的, the former 以前的, who had been cautious 小心的 in her praise 赞扬 of Mr. Bingley before, expressed 表达 to her sister 姐妹 just how very much she admired 赞赏 him.

“He is just what a young man ought 应当 to be,” said she, “sensible 明智, good-humoured, lively; and I never saw see such happy 幸福的 manners 方式!—so much ease 轻松, with such perfect 使完善；完美的 good breeding 养育；繁殖!”

“He is also hand‧some 英俊,” replied 回答 Elizabeth, “which a young man ought 应当 like‧wise 同样 to be, if he possibly can. His character 性格 is thereby 从而 complete.”

“I was very much flattered 奉承 by his asking me to dance 8 a second time. I did not expect such a compliment 赞扬.”

Affectation of candour is common 普通的 enough—one meets with it every‧where 到处. Bingley was endeared 爱戴 to Darcy by the easiness, openness 透明度, and ductility of his temper 性情, though no disposition 性格 could offer 提供 a greater contrast 对比 to his own, and though with his own he never appeared 出现 dissatisfied 使不满意. On the strength 力量 of Darcy’s regard 认为, Bingley had the firmest 坚固的 reliance 依赖, and of his judgement the highest opinion 意见. In under‧stand 懂, Darcy was the superior 优越. Bingley was by no means deficient 匮乏, but Darcy was clever 聪明的. The manner 方式 in which they spoke 讲:speak of the Meryton assembly 部件 was sufficiently 充分地 characteristic 特性. Mrs. Hurst and her sister 姐妹 allowed 允许 it to be so—but still they admired 赞赏 her and liked her, and pronounced 发音 her to be a sweet 甜的 girl, and one whom 谁 they would not object 物体；反对 to know more many of. For, though elated by his rank 排列, it did not render 给予 him supercilious; on the contrary 相反, he was all attention 注意 to every‧body 每人. By nature inoffensive, friendly 友好的, and obliging 责成, his presentation 介绍 at St. James’s had made him courteous.

Lady 女士 Lucas was a very good kind of woman, not too clever 聪明的 to be a valuable 贵重的 neighbour to Mrs. Bennet. They had several children. The eldest 最年长 of them, a sensible 明智, intelligent 智能 young woman, about twenty 二十-seven 七, was Elizabeth’s intimate 亲密 friend 6.

That the Miss 10 Lucases and the Miss 11 Bennets should meet to talk 说话 over a ball 7 was absolutely 完全地；绝对地 necessary 必要的; and the morning 早晨 after the assembly 部件 brought bring the former 以前的 to Longbourn to hear and to communicate 通信.

“Yes; but he seemed to like his second better well.”

“His pride 自尊,” said Miss Lucas, “does not offend 触怒 me so much as pride often does, because there is an excuse 原谅 for it. One cannot wonder 琢磨；奇妙 that so very fine 好的 a young man, with family, for‧tune 命运, every‧thing 每件事物 in his favour, should think highly of him‧self 他自己. If I may so express 表达 it, he has a right to be proud 自豪的.”

“ Remember 记得, Eliza, that he does not know Jane’s disposition 性格 as you do.”

“But if a woman is partial 局部 to a man, and does not endeavour to conceal 隐藏 it, he must find it out.”

“ Perhaps 或许 he must, if he sees enough of her. Occupied in observing 观察 Mr. Bingley’s attentions 注意 to her sister 姐妹, Elizabeth was far from suspecting 怀疑；嫌疑犯 that she was her‧self 她自己 becoming an object 物体；反对 of some interest in the eyes of his friend 9. Mr. Darcy had at first scarcely 缺乏的 allowed 允许 her to be pretty 漂亮的; he had looked at her without admiration 钦佩 at the ball 9; and when they next met meet, he looked at her only to criticise. “What does Mr. Darcy mean,” said she to Charlotte, “by listening 倾听 to my conversation with Colonel Forster?”

“That is a question which Mr. Darcy only can answer 答复.”

“But if he does it any more many I shall 将要 certainly let him know that I see what he is about. He has a very satirical eye, and if I do not begin by being 12 impertinent myself 我, I shall soon 11 grow 生长；种植 afraid 害怕的 of him.”

Mr. Darcy stood stand near them in silent 沉默的 indignation 愤慨 at such a mode 方式 of passing 走过 the evening 9, to the exclusion 排除 of all conversation 交谈, and was too much engrossed by his thoughts to perceive 认为 that Sir 先生 William Lucas was his neighbour, till 到 Sir William thus 于是 began begin:

“Nay, if you are serious 严肃的 about it, I shall 7 consider the matter is absolutely 完全地；绝对地 settled 解决；定居. You will be having a charming 魔力；使陶醉 mother 母亲-in-law, indeed 11; and, of course, she will always be at Pemberley with you.”

He listened 倾听 to her with perfect 使完善；完美的 indifference 漠不关心 while she chose 挑选:choose to entertain 热情款待 her‧self 她自己 in this manner 方式; and as his composure convinced 说服 her that all was safe 安全的, her wit 风趣 flowed 流 long.

Chapter 7

Mr. Bennet’s property 特性 consisted 组成 almost entirely 完全；彻底；完整地 in an estate 房地产 of two thou‧sand 千 a year, which, unfortunately 不幸 for his daughters 8, was entailed 意味着, in default 默认 of heirs 继承者 male 男性的, on a distant 遥远的 relation 关系; and their mother 6’s for‧tune 命运, though ample 充足 for her situation 处境 in life, could but ill 生病 supply 供给 the deficiency 不足 of his. The two youngest of the family, Catherine and Lydia, were particularly 特别 frequent 频繁的 in these attentions 注意; their minds were more many vacant 空的 than their sisters’, and when nothing better well offered 提供, a walk 走；步行同道 to Meryton was necessary 必要的 to amuse 使人发笑 their morning 早晨 hours 小时 and furnish 陈设 conversation 交谈 for the evening 10; and however bare 光秃秃的 of news 新闻 the country in general might be, they always contrived 图谋 to learn 学习 some from their aunt 阿姨.
