Episode 1 被害入狱

Edward Coke 原本是个军官，被害入狱，在过劳改生活。想逃。

Edward Coke was an army 军队 officer 军官；指挥官, but he is in prison 监狱 now. Every day is exactly 精确地；确切地 the same for him.

It is winter 冬 now and all the other men get up at 6, when it is still cold 寒冷的 and dark 黑暗的. They have break‧fast 早餐 at 6:30. Work begins at 7:30. Some of the men work in the prison 监狱 factory 工厂, where they make mail 邮件-bags 袋, but Coke often works in the fields 田 out‧side 在外面.

The men have lunch 午餐 at 12. Lunch lasts an hour 小时 and then the men go back to work again. Dinner 正餐 is at 6. Coke usually goes to the prison 监狱 library 图书馆 after dinner and reads until 9:30. The lights go out at ten 十. The day is long, hard 硬；困难的, and boring 厌倦；厌烦；生 and every man has a lot 大量；份额 of time to think. They usually think about why they are there. Coke does. He always thinks about two men.

One of the men is called Eric Smith. He was also an army 军队 officer 军官；指挥官, just like Coke. Coke knows that Smith has a lot of money 钱 now. The second man's name is Hugo. That is all Coke knows about him. Smith knows where and who Hugo is, but Coke doesn't.

Every night Coke lies 躺；说谎 in bed 床 and thinks about Eric Smith and Hugo. There is another thing he thinks about, too. Escaping. He wants to escape 逃脱 and find Smith, and then the other man. Coke is in prison 监狱 for something he did not do.

Episode 2 越狱了

晚间新闻在报道 Coke 越狱了。各方面的行动和反应。酒吧里一位叫 Smith 的对此尤为关注。

It is 6 o' clock 钟 on a very cold 寒冷的 winter 冬 evening 傍晚. All over England people are sitting 坐 down in their living-rooms and are watching 钟表；注视 the news 新闻 on TV or are listening 倾听 to it on the radio 无线电. There is one very important piece 块 of news this evening 傍晚. It is this:

"In the West 西 of England this evening, hundreds 百 of police 警察-men are looking for a man who escaped 逃脱 from Princeville Prison 监狱 early this morning 早晨. The man's name is Edward Coke. He is 30 years old, 6-foot 脚；英尺 tall 身高；高的, and has black 黑色 hair 头发 and blue 蓝色 eyes. He is wearing 穿着 a dark 黑暗的 blue prison 监狱 uniform 制服. The police 警察 do not think he can stay 停留 free 自由的 very long. It is only a few degrees 度 above 之上 zero 零 and it is snowing 雪；下雪."

The radio 无线电 is on in an expensive 昂贵的 pub 酒吧 in the center of London. Most many of the people there are not very interested in the news 新闻, but one man is. His name is Eric Smith. He is about 45 and is wearing 穿着 very expensive clothes 衣服，衣物. He is looking very afraid 害怕的 of something. There is another man standing next to him at the bar 条；酒吧. Smith is asking him a question.

"Did they say the man's name was Coke?"

"Yes, that's right, Coke... Edward Coke. Why? Do you know him?"

" Pardon 宽恕；说啥？?"

"Do you know him?"

"No... no.... I don't know him... I ... I just wanted to know the man's name, that's all."

In another part of London, a young detective 侦探 is standing in the office 办公室 of his chief 主要；首领 at Scotland Yard 院子. The young detective 侦探's name is Richard Baxter.

"You knew know Coke, didn't you, Baxter?'

"Yes, sir 先生. I arrested 逮捕 him 4 years ago 以前."

Baxter's chief is nodding 点头 his head. "Yes, I know that, Baxter. That's why I'm giving you this order, now. Find Coke again! You must find him immediately 立即，马上!"

Episode 3 侦探出动

Coke 躲在地里，侦探 Baxter 乘火车前往现场，车上乘客热心介绍案情。

It is 6:30 in the evening 傍晚 now, and the wind 风 is still blowing 吹；殴打. It is getting colder 寒冷的. About ten 十 miles 英里 away from Princeville Prison 监狱 a man is hiding 隐藏 in a field 田. The wind 风 is cutting 砍 through his thin 薄的 prison 监狱 uniform 制服 like a knife 刀.

A dog 狗 is barking 吠 some‧where 某处 in the distance 距离. Is it a police 警察 dog perhaps 或许? The man in the field 田 does not know. There is only one idea 主意 in his mind at the moment 瞬间: he must find food 食物 and some warm 暖和的 clothes 衣服，衣物, but where?

Two hundred 百 miles 英里 away in London, Baxter's train 火车；训练 is standing at platform 平台 9 in Paddington Station 站. Baxter is sitting 坐 in a comfort‧able 舒服；自在 compartment 隔室. There is another man opposite 相对的 him. Baxter doesn't know the man but he can see he wants to talk 说话. The man is holding a news‧paper 报纸 in his hands.

"I see some‧one 某人 escaped 逃脱 from Princeville Prison 8 this morning 早晨."

"Oh, really?"

"Yes... Would you like to read about it? It's all here in the paper 纸；报纸."

"No, thank 谢谢 you."

The train 火车；训练 is leaving the station 站 now. Baxter is looking out of the window 窗. He can see a thou‧sand 千 bright 明亮的 lights in the windows 窗 of pubs 酒吧, cafes 咖啡店, houses and apartments 公寓套房. Everywhere 到处 people are sitting 坐 down to warm 暖和的 meals 餐 and hot 热的 cups 杯子 of tea 茶水. The world looks warm and comfort‧able 舒服；自在. The man opposite 相对的 Baxter is still talking 说话.

"The paper 纸；报纸 says the man was a spy 间谍... he gave give important military 军事 secrets 秘密 away. I hope 希望 the police 警察 catch 抓；赶上 him!"

"Yes, so do I."

Episode 4 孤独人家

Coke 从地里出来，顺灯火找到了一孤独人家，却怕是陷阱。

Baxter got get on the train 火车；训练 at 5 o' clock 钟. An hour 小时 later, at 6, he was asleep 睡着的 in the warm 暖和的 train compartment 隔室. Coke was still in his hiding 隐藏-place in a field 田, 100 miles 英里 away. The winter 冬 evening 傍晚 got get darker 黑暗的 and colder 寒冷的. The wind 风 cut 砍 through Coke's thin 薄的 uniform 制服 like a knife 刀. Coke was hungry 饥饿 and tired 使…疲惫, and his arms 手臂 and legs 腿 were so cold 寒冷的 that he could hardly 几乎不 feel them. He knew know he had to find food 食物, warm 暖和的 clothing 衣服；服装, and a warm place some‧where 某处. "I have to make a move! I can't just stay 停留 in this field 田 and die 死亡 of the cold 寒冷的!" he thought think.

Coke got get up and began begin to walk 走；步行同道. "Where am I? Which direction 方向 am I walking 走；步行同道 in? Am I going back towards the prison 9?" he asked him‧self 他自己. A few minutes 分 later, the moon 月亮 came out and Coke could see better well. He stopped 停止 and looked around. Suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 he saw see a small light not far away. "What can it be? It can't be a car. It isn't moving! It must be a house!" he said to himself and began begin to walk 走；步行同道 towards it. The light got get larger. It was a house! He could see the form of the roof 屋顶 in the darkness 黑暗.

Ten 十 minutes 分 later, he was out‧side 在外面 the house. He stopped 停止 and listened 倾听. " Strange 奇怪；陌生!" he thought think. "I can't hear any‧thing 任何东西, not even a radio 无线电 or a TV, but there must be some‧one 某人 in there! There's a light on." Just at that moment 瞬间, a thought think struck 敲击:strike him.

"This is probably 很可能；大概 the only house around for miles 英里! The police 警察 know I'm probably around here some‧where 某处; and if they're any‧where 任何地方, they're in that house, waiting 等候 for me!"

Coke didn't move. The wind 风 became become colder 寒冷的. His feet and hands felt feel like ice 冰 in the snow 雪；下雪. "I have to take the chance 机会! I have to! This is the only place I can find warm 暖和的 clothes 衣服，衣物 and food 食物!" he thought think.

Episode 5 闯入寡妇家

Coke 最终铤而走险，推门而入，主人竟是聋子寡妇。慷慨给吃。

Coke listened 倾听 for several seconds but he could not hear any‧thing 任何东西 at all. And yet there was smoke 烟 coming from the chimney 烟囱 and there was a light on in the front 前面 room! There was very little furniture 家具 in it---only a couch 长椅 and a table 桌；表 in front 前面 of the fire 火 and two old-fashioned 时尚 chairs 椅子. There were also some photographs 照片 on the shelf 架子 above 之上 the fire 火. They were yellow 黄色的 and old. There were also a few of the same young man and also a woman in old-fashioned 时尚 wedding 结婚- clothes 衣服，衣物.

Suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 Coke froze 使结冰；不动:freeze. There was some‧one 某人 else 其他 in the room. He knew know it. He could feel it! He turned around quickly 迅速地 and, at the same time, put his hand in his pocket 口袋. There was a small knife 刀 there. He saw see an old woman. "I'm sorry," she said again. "I didn't hear you. Did you knock 敲? I'm deaf 聋的, you see."

She pointed to her ear 耳朵, shook 摇晃:shake her head and said " deaf" a second time. "People often come to the door 门 and knock 敲, but I don't hear them. I'm glad 高兴的 you came in."

Coke stared 盯着看，凝视，注视 at her for a second and then finally 最后 found find his voice 嗓音, "I ... I'm sorry 对不起的 I just stepped 步；走 in."

Episode 6 警察奔向寡妇家

当地警察局派警察骑自行车前往聋子寡妇家探望。侦探 Baxter 的火车也到了当地车站。

It was a cold 寒冷的 and miserable 悲惨的 night. Only a few miles 英里 from the house Coke was in, two police 警察-men in a small village 村庄 station 站 could hear the wind 风 out‧side 在外面. One of them was a sergeant 军士. The other was much younger.

"I wonder 琢磨；奇妙 how Mrs Bentley is?" the sergeant 军士 asked.

"Mrs Bentley? Oh, you mean that old lady 女士 whose 谁的 husband 丈夫 died 死亡 a few years ago 以前?"

"That's right. She's deaf 聋的, you know, so she never listens 倾听 to the radio 无线电 or watches 钟表；注视 TV. In fact, she doesn't even read the papers 纸；报纸."

"Oh?" the young police‧man 警察 said. He wondered 琢磨；奇妙 why the sergeant 军士 wanted to tell him all this. Then he found find out.

"Why don't you go out to her place and see if she's all right?"

"Who? Me? On a night like this?"

"It's not far. Besides 而且, you've got get your bike 自行车, haven't you?"

Baxter got get off the train 火车；训练 at a small station 站. There was a detective 侦探 waiting 等候 for him on the platform 平台. He shook 摇晃:shake Baxter's hand. "My name's Jones, Tom Jones. Scotland Yard 院子 phoned 电话 us and told tell us to meet you here. There's a car waiting."

Baxter wasted 浪费 very little time on social formalities 礼节.

"Coke escaped 逃脱 more many than 24 hours 小时 ago 以前. I want to catch 抓；赶上 him before another 24 hours are up."

Jones looked at Baxter for a few seconds before he answered 答复.

"A lot 大量；份额 of us wonder 琢磨；奇妙 why Scotland Yard 院子 is so interested in this fellow 同伴 Coke. He isn't the first one to escape 逃脱. "Coke isn't an ordinary 普通的 prisoner 犯人，囚犯. He's very special 特殊的. Let's get going!"

The young police‧man 警察 was angry 生气的. He was on the road 路 now. The wind 风 was cold 寒冷的 and blew 吹；殴打:blow snow 雪；下雪 into his face. "That stupid 愚蠢的 sergeant 军士!" he thought think. "We must be one of the last stations 站 in England that still uses bikes 自行车, and he sends 派遣；送 me out on a night like this!"

He had to get off the bike 自行车 and push 推 it up a hill 小山. It was the last hill between the station 站 and the old lady 女士's house. When he got get to the top 顶 of it he could see the house down below 在下面, at the bottom 底部 of the hill 小山. Just as he looked down at it, he saw see a light go on in one of the rooms upstairs 楼上. " Stupid 愚蠢的! That's what it is, sending 派遣；送 me out on a night like this!" the police‧man 警察 said again. Then he got get on his bike 自行车 and began begin to go down the hill very fast 快的, towards the house.

Episode 7 给吃还给穿

聋子寡妇饭后又热心让 Coke 换上暖和衣服。

"You know, your clothes 6 are in a terrible 可怕的 state," the old lady 女士 said after the meal 餐. You ruined 破坏 them when you had the accident 意外事件!"

"That's all right. They're just my work-clothes 7," Coke answered 答复.

"My husband 丈夫 was just about your size 大小. A little heavier 厚实；重的 perhaps 或许. All his clothes 8 are upstairs 楼上. They're no good to him. He died 死亡 two years ago 以前." She pointed up to the room above 之上 them.

"Why don't you see if any of his clothes 9 fit 合适 you? You can bring them back tomorrow 在明天."

" Nobody 没有人 can be this lucky 幸运!" Coke thought think to him‧self 他自己. He went upstairs 楼上 and turned the light on. It was clear that the old lady 女士 was almost in another world. She trusted 信任 every‧body 每人. He found find a heavy 厚实；重的 jacket 衣服, a woolen 羊毛制的 shirt 衬衫 and some trousers 长裤 hanging 悬挂 in the room.

"What do you know about Coke?" Baxter asked Jones. They were in the car now. "Very little, I'm afraid 害怕的. In fact, I don't think I know any‧thing 任何东西 about him at all. Wasn't he the fellow 同伴 who was in that spy 间谍 case about 4 years ago 以前?"

"Yes, that's right. Coke always said it wasn't him ... that it was some‧one 某人 else 其他."

"That's what they all say. But what's so special 特殊的 about him?"

"Coke was in Army 军队 Intelligence 情报. He knew know important secrets 秘密. We could never under‧stand 懂 why he sold 卖:sell them. There wasn't a real motive 动机. Some said he did it for money 钱. We couldn't prove 证明 it, but if he was a spy 间谍, he still knows much. We could never find out who he sold the secrets 秘密 to. That's why we have to catch 抓；赶上 him before he makes contact 联系 with any of his old friends 朋友!"

Coke put the clothes on as quickly 迅速地 as he could. They were old and shabby 破旧, but at least 最小的 they were warm 8. When he came downstairs 楼下, the old lady 女士 was still in front 前面 of the fire 火. She smiled 微笑 when she looked at him. "You know, you look just like my husband 丈夫 in those clothes, when he was much younger, of course."

"I can't thank 谢谢 you enough. It's very kind of you to do all this for me." The old lady 女士 didn't seem to hear him.

"Just like my husband," she said again. Just then, there was a knock 敲 on the door 门.

Episode 8 袭击警察

Coke 打翻警察，抢了他的自行车逃跑。警察电话救急。

The deaf 聋的 old lady didn't hear the knock, but Coke did. His heart 心 began begin to pound 敲打；英镑 wildly 野生的. Whoever 无论谁 it was obviously 明显 knew know there was some‧one 某人 inside 里面的 because there was light on and smoke 烟 coming from the chimney 烟囱. He had to decide 决定 what to do, and quickly 迅速地.

"There's some‧one 某人 at the door 门," he said loudly 响亮的, but the old lady 7 did not under‧stand 懂.

"There's someone at the door," he said again, this time even more many loudly than before. She went out of the room and Coke quickly 迅速地 stepped 步；走 back into the shadows 阴影 of the front 前面 room.

The old lady 8 opened the front 6 door 门. Coke could see her quite 相当 clearly, but nothing else 其他. He listened 倾听 carefully 小心.

" Hello 哈喽, Mrs Bentley. I'm from the village 村庄 police 7 station 站. The sergeant 军士 sent 派遣；送:send me. I've got get something to tell you."

Then Coke saw see the police‧man 警察 very clearly. Coke looked around quickly 迅速地. There was a poker 捅火钩；扑克 lying 躺；说谎 in the fire‧place 壁炉. He almost went to get it and then stopped 停止.

"No!" he thought think. "That's too dangerous 危险. They already 早已；已经 think I'm a spy 间谍. Whatever 无论什么 I have to do I can do just as well with my fists 拳头." He stepped 步；走 back and waited 等候. The old lady 9 and the police‧man 警察 came through the door 6 into the sitting 坐-room. Coke was still behind 之后 the door 7, so the police‧man 警察 could not see him.

"Good evening 傍晚 officer 军官；指挥官. Can I help you?" Coke said very loudly 响亮的 and clearly. The police‧man 警察 turned around and looked at Coke. He was very surprised 使惊奇. Then Coke hit 打 him as hard 硬；困难的 as he could in the stomach 胃 and he fell 落下:fall to the floor 地面 heavily 很大，沉重地. The old lady 10 screamed 叫喊. The police‧man 警察 tried to get up, but fell back weakly 柔弱的. Coke ran run out of the room.

The phone 电话 rang 戒指；打电话:ring about 5 minutes 分 later at the local 地方的 police 8 head‧quarter 总部. Jones answered 答复 it.

"What? Coke? Where? When?"

Baxter stood stand up as soon 立刻 as he heard hear Coke's name. He quickly 迅速地 put his hat 帽子 and coat 上衣 on. Jones listened 倾听 carefully 小心 to the voice 嗓音 on the other end and quickly 6 made a few notes 笔记.

Then he put the phone 电话 down and turned to Baxter.

"Well, we know where Coke is now. A police‧man 警察 almost caught 抓；赶上:catch him only 5 minutes 分 ago 6."

"What do you mean, 'he almost caught him'? Did he catch 抓；赶上 him or didn't he?"

"No, he got get away. He stole the police‧man 警察's bike 自行车."

Episode 9 劫警车

Baxter 和警官 Jones 立即驱车前往现场。路上见 Coke 欲擒拿，不料却把警车也丢给了 Coke。

Baxter got get into the car first. Jones was right behind 之后 him. "You drive 驾驶. You know the area better well than I do," Baxter said. They raced 赛跑 out of the town 城镇 and into the dark 黑暗的 country‧side 农村.

"It's ridiculous 荒谬," Jones said. "Does he really think he's going to get away from us on a bike 自行车?"

"Coke isn't a fool 愚人," Baxter answered 答复. "He probably 很可能；大概 doesn't realize 明白；理解；实现 we already 早已；已经 know what happened 发生 in the old lady 11's house."

"You mean he doesn't know that even village 村庄 police 9-men have small two-way radios 无线电 these days?"

"That's right. He probably 很可能；大概 thinks it's going to take that police‧man 警察 at least 最小的 half 一半的 an hour 小时 to get to the nearest phone 电话. He thinks he can get pretty 漂亮的 far in that time."

Ten 十 minutes 分 later, about 3 miles 英里 from the old lady's house, Baxter suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 saw see someone 7 on the dark 黑暗的 road 路 ahead 前面；往前.

"Look! There!" he shouted 呼喊. "There's someone 8 on a bike 自行车! And look! He's going to get off!"

Jones saw see the man quite 相当 clearly, but only for a second. As soon 立刻 as the man saw see they were in a police 10 car, he dropped 放下；滴；掉 his bike 自行车 and ran run into the trees 树 at the side of the road 路.

"That's Coke!" Baxter shouted 呼喊. "He isn't going to get away this time!" Baxter jumped 跳 out of the car even before Jones stopped 停止 it, and ran run after Coke. Jones jumped out, too. He didn't even switch 开关 off the head-lights.

All Coke's training 火车；训练 as a soldier 士兵 helped him now. Baxter was just behind 之后 him when Coke suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 turned. Baxter tried to grab 用手抓 him but almost lost 失去的 his balance 平衡. Then Coke hit 打 him on the chin 下巴 as hard 硬；困难的 as he could. Baxter fell 落下:fall to the ground 地面 heavily 很大，沉重地. At that moment 瞬间, Jones jumped 跳 on Coke from behind 之后 but Coke threw 投掷:throw him over his back and against a tree 树, and then ran run back towards the ground 地面 again. It took Baxter several seconds to realize 明白；理解；实现 where he was. At first, all he could feel was a terrible pain in his jaw 下巴. Then he heard hear the sound 声音 of a car engine 发动机 starting. He looked up and saw see Jones pointing to it. Suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 Baxter realized 明白；理解；实现 every‧thing 每件事物. Jones tried to run after the car but it was too late. Coke was gone and so was their car!

Episode 10 闯封锁线

Coke 开警车闯过封锁线，直奔 London。

Coke drove 驾驶:drive for about twenty 二十 minutes 分. He felt feel nervous 担心的 in the police car but he knew know it was his only chance 机会.

"I wonder 琢磨；奇妙 how that police‧man 警察 managed 使用 to contact 联系 police-head‧quarter 总部 so quickly 7?" He asked him‧self 他自己. Then he remembered 记得 a news‧paper 报纸 article 文章 about the new pocket 口袋 radios 无线电 all police-men had. They were small things which they put in their pockets 口袋.

"Of course! That's it!" he thought think. Then he wondered 琢磨；奇妙 if detectives 侦探 like Jones and Baxter also had them. He knew know they probably 很可能；大概 did not, because they already 早已；已经 had radios in their cars. Suddenly 6, however, something on the road 路 ahead 前面；往前 interrupted 打断 his thoughts. Two police cars were there, side by side, blocking 块 the road. Nothing could get by them!

The two police-men at the road 6-block 块 were bored 厌倦；厌烦；生. It was a lonely 孤独的 spot 地点 between two hills 小山 and there was very little traffic 交通.

"Could you give me a light, Tom?" one of them said. It was his tenth cigarette 香烟，纸烟 that night. Just then, they both looked up and saw see a car coming towards them.

"It's a police car," the other one said. " Perhaps 或许 they're bringing us some hot 热的 coffee 咖啡, or something to eat 吃."

They both watched 钟表；注视 the car as it came closer. It was a long, straight 直的 road 7 and the car was still a good distance 距离 away.

"Isn't it going to stop 停止?"

"It doesn't look like it."

" Shall 将要 we stop it? Our orders are to stop every car."

Just then, they heard hear the two-tone 音 sound 声音 of the horn 角；喇叭. It was obvious 明显 that who‧ever 无论谁 was in the car was in a great hurry 赶紧.
