“GIT up!  What you ‘bout 回合?”

I opened my eyes and looked around, trying to make out where I was.  It was after sun 太阳-up, and I had been sound 声音 asleep 睡着的.  Pap was standing over me looking sour 有酸味的 and sick 病；恶心, too.  He says:

“What you doin’ with this gun 枪?”

I judged 审判 he didn’t know nothing about what he had been doing, so I says:

“ Somebody 某人 tried to get in, so I was laying 放置 for him.”

“Why didn’t you roust me out?”

“Well, I tried to, but I couldn’t; I couldn’t budge you.”

“Well, all right.  Don’t stand there palavering all day, but out with you and see if there’s a fish 鱼 on the lines for break‧fast 早餐.  I’ll be along 一起 in a minute 分.”

He unlocked 开锁 the door 门, and I cleared out up the river 河-bank 银行；岸.  I noticed 注意 some pieces 块 of limbs 肢 and such things floating 漂浮 down, and a sprinkling 撒 of bark 吠; so I knowed the river 河 had begun begin to rise 上升.  I reckoned 估计 I would have great times now if I was over at the town 城镇.  The June rise used to be always luck 运气 for me; because as soon 立刻 as that rise begins here comes cord‧wood 绳‧木材；树林 floating 漂浮 down, and pieces 块 of log 记录 rafts 筏— some‧time 有时 a dozen （一）打；十二 logs 记录 together 同时; so all you have to do is to catch 抓；赶上 them and sell 卖 them to the wood 木材；树林-yards 院子 and the sawmill.

It was pretty 漂亮的 close to the shanty, and I thought think I heard hear the old man coming all the time; but I got get her hid 隐藏:hide; and then I out and looked around a bunch 束 of willows 柳, and there was the old man down the path 小路 a piece 块 just drawing 绘画 a bead 珠子 on a bird 鸟 with his gun 枪.  So he hadn’t seen see any‧thing 任何东西.

“Another time a man comes a-prowling round 圆形的；围绕 here you roust me out, you hear? That man warn 警告’t here for no good.  I’d a shot 射击；拍摄:shoot him.  Next time you roust me out, you hear?”

Then he dropped 放下；滴；掉 down and went to sleep 睡 again; but what he had been saying give me the very idea 主意 I wanted.  I says to myself 我, I can fix 固定 it now so nobody 没有人 won 赢:win’t think of following me.

About twelve 十二 o’ clock 钟 we turned out and went along 一起 up thebank 银行；岸.  The river 河 was coming up pretty 漂亮的 fast 快的, and lots 大量；份额 of drift‧wood 漂移‧木材；树林 going by on the rise 上升. I took the sack 解雇 of corn 玉米 meal 餐 and took it to where the canoe 独木舟 was hid 隐藏:hide, and shoved 推 the vines 藤蔓 and branches 树枝 apart 相隔 and put it in; then I done the same with the side of bacon 培根; then the whisky 威士忌酒-jug 坛子.  I took all the coffee 咖啡 and sugar 食糖 there was, and all the ammunition 弹药; I took the wadding; I took the bucket 水桶 and gourd; I took a dipper 浸 and a tin 锡 cup 杯子, and my old saw see and two blankets 毯, and the skillet and the coffee 咖啡-pot 罐.  I took fish 鱼-lines and matches 比赛；火柴 and other things— every‧thing 每件事物 that was worth 值得的 a cent 分.  I cleaned 清理；清洁的 out the place.  I wanted an axe 斧子, but there wasn’t any, only the one out at the wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆, and I knowed why I was going to leave that.  I fetched 取 out the gun 枪, and now I was done.

Well, last I pulled 拉 out some of my hair 头发, and blooded 血 the axe 斧子 good, and stuck 棍；粘贴:stick it on the back side, and slung the axe in the corner 角落.  Then I took up the pig 猪 and held hold him to my breast 乳房 with my jacket 衣服 (so he couldn’t drip 滴) till 到 I got get a good piece 块 below 在下面 the house and then dumped 倾倒 him into the river 8.  Now I thought think of something else 其他.  So I went and got get the bag 袋 of meal 餐 and my old saw see out of the canoe 独木舟, and fetched 取 them to the house.  I took the bag to where it used to stand, and ripped 安息 a hole 洞 in the bottom 底部 of it with the saw see, for there warn 警告’t no knives and forks 叉 on the place—pap done every‧thing 每件事物 with his clasp 钩-knife 刀 about the cooking 烹调.  Then I carried 运送；支撑 the sack 解雇 about a hundred 百yards 院子 across 穿过 the grass 草 and through the willows 柳 east 东 of the house, to a shallow 浅的 lake 湖 that was five mile 英里 wide 宽的 and full 满的 of rushes 仓促—and ducks 鸭子 too, you might say, in the season 季节.  There was a slough or a creek 溪 leading out of it on the other side that went miles 英里 away, I don’t know where, but it didn’t go to the river 9.  The meal 餐 sifted 筛 out and made a little track 小路 all the way to the lake 湖.  I dropped 放下；滴；掉 pap’s whetstone there too, so as to look like it had been done by accident 意外事件. Then I tied 打结；系上；关系 up the rip 安息 in the meal 餐 sack 解雇 with a string 绳子, so it wouldn’t leak 泄漏 no more many, and took it and my saw see to the canoe 独木舟 again.

It was about dark 黑暗的 now; so I dropped 放下；滴；掉 the canoe 独木舟 down the river 10 under some willows 柳 that hung 悬挂:hang over thebank 银行；岸, and waited 等候 for the moon 月亮 to rise 上升.  I made fast 快的 to a willow 柳; then I took a bite 咬 to eat 吃, and by and by laid 放置:lay down in the canoe 独木舟 to smoke 烟 a pipe 管子 and lay 放置 out a plan.  I says to myself 我, they’ll follow the track 小路 of that sackful of rocks 岩石 to the shore 岸 and then drag 拖拽 the river 11 for me.  And they’ll follow that meal 餐 track to the lake 湖 and go browsing 浏览 down the creek 溪 that leads out of it to find the robbers 强盗 that killed 杀死… me and took the things.  They won 赢:win’t ever 永远；曾经 hunt 打猎 the river for any‧thing 任何东西 but my dead 死去的 carcass 胴体. They’ll soon 立刻 get tired 使…疲惫 of that, and won 赢:win’t bother no more many about me.  All right; I can stop 停止 any‧where 任何地方 I want to. Jackson’s Island 岛 is good enough for me; I know that island pretty 漂亮的 well, and nobody 没有人 ever 永远；曾经 comes there.  And then I can paddle 桨 over to town 城镇 nights, and slink around and pick 挑选 up things I want. Jackson’s Island 岛’s the place.

I was pretty 漂亮的 tired 使…疲惫, and the first thing I knowed I was asleep 睡着的.  When I woke 醒:wake up I didn’t know where I was for a minute 分.  I set up and looked around, a little scared 惊恐.  Then I remembered 记得.  The river looked miles 英里 and miles across 穿过.  The moon 月亮 was so bright 明亮的 I could a counted 数；总数 the drift 漂移 logs 记录 that went a-slipping 滑 along 6, black 黑色 and still, hundreds 百 ofyards 院子 out from shore 岸. Everything 每件事物 was dead 死去的 quiet 清静的, and it looked late, and smelt 气味；嗅觉:smell late. You know what I mean—I don’t know the words to put it in.

I took a good gap 缺口 and a stretch 伸展, and was just going to unhitch and start when I heard hear a sound 声音 away over the water.  I listened 倾听.   Pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 I made it out.  It was that dull 钝的；没兴趣 kind of a regular 有规律的 sound 声音 that comes from oars working in rowlocks when it’s a still night.  I peeped 窥视 out through the willow 柳 branches 树枝, and there it was—a skiff, away across 穿过 the water.  I couldn’t tell how many was in it.  It kept keep a-coming, and when it was abreast of me I see there warn 警告’t but one man in it.  Think’s I, maybe 也许 it’s pap, though I warn’t expecting him.  He dropped 放下；滴；掉 below 在下面 me with the current 现在的, and by and by he came a-swinging 摇摆 up shore 岸 in the easy 容易的 water, and he went by so close I could a reached 到达 out the gun 枪 and touched 触摸 him.  Well, it was pap, sure 确信的 enough—and sober 清醒, too, by the way he laid 放置:lay his oars.

I didn’t lose 失去 no time.  The next minute 分 I was a-spinning 旋转；纺纱 down stream 河流 soft 软的 but quick 快的 in the shade 遮阳；阴 of thebank 银行；岸.  I made two mile 英里 and a half 一半的, and then struck 敲击:strike out a quarter 四分之一 of a mile or more many towards the middle 中部 of the river, because pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 I would be passing 走过 the ferry 渡船 landing 陆地；着陆, and people might see me and hail 冰雹 me.  I got get out amongst 之中 the drift‧wood 漂移‧木材；树林, and then laid 放置:lay down in the bottom 底部 of the canoe 独木舟 and let her float 漂浮.

 I laid there, and had a good rest 休息，其余 and a smoke 烟 out of my pipe 管子, looking away into the sky 天（空）; not a cloud 云 in it.  The sky looks ever 永远；曾经 so deep 深的 when you lay 放置 down on your back in the moon‧shine 月亮‧发光; I never knowed it before.  And how far a body 身体 can hear on the water such nights!  I heard hear people talking 说话 at the ferry 渡船 landing 陆地；着陆. I heard hear what they said, too—every word of it.  One man said it was getting towards the long days and the short 短的 nights now.  T’other one said this warn 警告’t one of the short ones, he reckoned 估计—and then they laughed 笑, and he said it over again, and they laughed again; then they waked 醒 up another fellow 同伴 and told tell him, and laughed, but he didn’t laugh 笑; he ripped 安息 out something brisk 轻快, and said let him alone 单独的.  The first fellow said he ‘ lowed 低的 to tell it to his old woman—she would think it was pretty 漂亮的 good; but he said that warn 8’t nothing to some things he had said in his time. I heard hear one man say it was nearly three o’ clock 钟, and he hoped 希望 day‧light 日光 wouldn’t wait 等候 more many than about a week longer.  After that the talk 说话 got get further 更远的 and further away, and I couldn’t make out the words any more many; but I could hear the mumble 咕哝, and now and then a laugh 笑, too, but it seemed a long ways off.

I was away below 在下面 the ferry 渡船 now.  I rose 上升:rise up, and there was Jackson’s Island 岛, about two mile 英里 and a half 一半的 down stream 河流, heavy 厚实；重的 timbered 木材 and standing up out of the middle 中部 of the river, big and dark 黑暗的 and solid 固体的, like a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 without any lights.  There warn 9’t any signs 符号 of the bar 条；酒吧 at the head—it was all under water now.

It didn’t take me long to get there.  I shot 射击；拍摄:shootpast 过去的 the head at a ripping 安息 rate 速度, the current 现在的 was so swift 迅速, and then I got get into the dead 死去的 water and landed 陆地；着陆 on the side towards the Illinois shore 岸.  I run the canoe 独木舟 into a deep 深的 dent 凹痕 in the bank 7 that I knowed about; I had to part the willow 柳 branches 树枝 to get in; and when I made fast 快的 nobody 没有人 could a seen see the canoe 独木舟 from the out‧side 在外面.

I went up and set down on a log 记录 at the head of the island 岛, and looked out on the big river and the black 黑色 drift‧wood 漂移‧木材；树林 and away over to the town 城镇, three mile 英里 away, where there was three or four lights twinkling 眨眼.  A monstrous 滔天 big lumber 木料-raft 筏 was about a mile up stream 河流, coming along 7 down, with a lantern 灯笼 in the middle 中部 of it.  I watched 钟表；注视 it come creeping 爬行 down, and when it was most many abreast of where I stood stand I heard hear a man say, “Stern oars, there! heave 举起 her head to stab‧board 刺‧板，上船!”  I heard hear that just as plain 平原；明显 as if the man was by my side.

There was a little gray 灰色 in the sky 天（空） now; so I stepped 步；走 into the woods 木材；树林, and laid 放置:lay down for a nap 小憩 before break‧fast 早餐.

CHAPTER 章节 VIII.

THE sun 太阳 was up so high when I waked 醒 that I judged 审判 it was after eight 八 o’ clock 钟.  I laid 7 there in the grass 草 and the cool 冷静的；酷 shade 遮阳；阴 thinking about things, and feeling rested 休息，其余 and ruther comfort‧able 舒服；自在 and satisfied 使满意.  I could see the sun 太阳 out at one or two holes 洞, but mostly it was big trees 树 all about, and gloomy 阴沉 in there amongst 之中 them.  There was freckled places on the ground 6 where the light sifted 筛 down through the leaves, and the freckled places swapped 交换 about a little, showing there was a little breeze 微风 up there.  A couple 两；双 of squirrels 松鼠 set on a limb 肢 and jabbered at me very friendly 友好的.

I was powerful 强大 lazy 懒惰的 and comfort‧able 舒服；自在—didn’t want to get up and cook 烹调 break‧fast 早餐.  Well, I was dozing off again when I thinks I hears a deep 深的 sound 声音 of “boom 繁荣!” away up the river.  I rouses 唤醒 up, and rests 休息，其余 on my elbow 弯头 and listens 倾听; pretty 7 soon 立刻 I hears it again.  I hopped 跳 up, and went and looked out at a hole 洞 in the leaves, and I see a bunch 束 of smoke 烟 laying 放置 on the water a long ways up—about abreast the ferry 渡船.  And there was the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 full 满的 of people floating 漂浮 along 8 down.  I knowed what was the matter now.  "Boom 繁荣!” I see the white 白色的 smoke squirt out of the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船’s side.  You see, they was firing 火 cannon 大炮 over the water, trying to make my carcass 胴体 come to the top 顶.

I was pretty 8 hungry 饥饿, but it warn 10’t going to do for me to start a fire 火, because they might see the smoke.  So I set there and watched 钟表；注视 the cannon 大炮- smoke and listened 倾听 to the boom 繁荣.  The river was a mile 7 wide 宽的 there, and it always looks pretty 9 on a summer 夏 morning 早晨—so I was having a good enough time seeing them hunt 打猎 for my remainders 余 if I only had a bite 咬 to eat 吃. Well, then I happened 发生 to think how they always put quick‧silver 快的‧银 in loaves of bread 面包 and float 漂浮 them off, because they always go right to the drownded carcass 胴体 and stop 停止 there.  So, says I, I’ll keep a look‧out 小心, and if any of them’s floating 漂浮 around after me I’ll give them a show.  I changed to the Illinois edge 边 of the island 岛 to see what luck 运气 I could have, and I warn 11’t disappointed 使失望.  A big double 双的 loaf 面包条 come along 9, and I most many got get it with a long stick 棍；粘贴, but my foot 脚；英尺 slipped 滑 and she floated 漂浮 out further 更远的.  Of course I was where the current 现在的 set in the closest to the shore 岸—I knowed enough for that.  But by and by along comes another one, and this time I won 赢:win.  I took out the plug 插头 and shook 摇晃:shake out the little dab 轻拍 of quick‧silver 快的‧银, and set my teeth in.  It was “ baker 烤’s bread 面包”—what the quality 质量 eat 吃; none 没有人 of your low 低的-down corn 玉米-pone.

I got get a good place amongst 之中 the leaves, and set there on a log 记录, munching the bread 面包 and watching 钟表；注视 the ferry 渡船-boat 小船, and very well satisfied 使满意.  And then something struck 敲击:strike me.  I says, now I reckon 估计 the widow 寡妇 or the parson or some‧body 某人 prayed 祈祷 that this bread 面包 would find me, and here it has gone and done it.  So there ain’t no doubt 怀疑 but there is something in that thing—that is, there’s something in it when a body 身体 like the widow 寡妇 or the parson prays 祈祷, but it don’t work for me, and I reckon 估计 it don’t work for only just the right kind.

I lit light a pipe 管子 and had a good long smoke 烟, and went on watching 钟表；注视.  The ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 was floating 漂浮 with the current 现在的, and I allowed 允许 I’d have a chance 机会 to see who was aboard 船上 when she come along, because she would come in close, where the bread 面包 did.  When she’d got get pretty 10 well along down towards me, I put out my pipe 管子 and went to where I fished 鱼 out the bread, and laid 8 down behind 之后 a log 记录 on the bank 8 in a little open place.  Where the log forked 叉 I could peep 窥视 through.

By and by she come along, and she drifted 漂移 in so close that they could a run out a plank 板 and walked 走；步行同道 ashore 岸上.  Most many every‧body 每人 was on theboat 小船.  Pap, and Judge 审判 Thatcher, and Bessie Thatcher, and Jo Harper, and Tom Sawyer, and his old Aunt 阿姨 Polly, and Sid and Mary, and plenty 丰富 more many.   Everybody was talking 说话 about the murder 谋杀, but the captain 船长 broke 破；断:break in and says:

“Look sharp 敏锐的, now; the current 现在的 sets in the closest here, and maybe 也许 he’s washed 洗 ashore 岸上 and got get tangled 纠纷 amongst 之中 the brush 刷子 at the water’s edge 边.  I hope 希望 so, anyway 无论如何.”

I didn’t hope so.  They all crowded 人群；拥挤 up and leaned 靠:lean over the rails 围栏；钢轨, nearly in my face, and kept keep still, watching 钟表；注视 with all their might.  I could see them first- rate 速度, but they couldn’t see me.  Then the captain 船长 sung 唱:sing out:

“Stand away!” and the cannon 大炮 let off such a blast 爆破 right before me that it made me deef with the noise 噪音 and pretty 11 near blind 失明的 with the smoke 烟, and I judged 审判 I was gone.  If they’d a had some bullets 子弹 in, I reckon 估计 they’d a got get the corpse 尸体 they was after.  Well, I see I warn 12’t hurt 损害, thanks 谢谢 to goodness 善良. Theboat 小船 floated 漂浮 on and went out of sight 视力 around the shoulder 肩膀 of the island 岛.  I could hear the booming 繁荣 now and then, further 更远的 and further off, and by and by, after an hour 小时, I didn’t hear it no more many.  The island was three mile 8 long.  I judged 审判 they had got get to the foot 脚；英尺, and was giving it up.  But they didn’t yet a while.  They turned around the foot of the island 7 and started up the channel 渠道 on the Missouri side, under steam 蒸汽, and booming 繁荣 once in a while as they went.  I crossed 穿过；十字 over to that side and watched 钟表；注视 them. When they got get abreast the head of the island 8 they quit 放弃 shooting 射击；拍摄 and dropped 放下；滴；掉 over to the Missouri shore 岸 and went home to the town 城镇.

I knowed I was all right now.   Nobody 没有人 else 其他 would come a- hunting 打猎 after me. I got get my traps 陷阱；诱骗 out of the canoe 独木舟 and made me a nice 美好的 camp 营地 in the thick 浓的 woods 木材；树林.  I made a kind of a tent 帐篷 out of my blankets 毯 to put my things under so the rain 雨 couldn’t get at them.  I catched 抓；赶上 a cat‧fish 猫‧鱼 and haggled him open with my saw see, and towards sun‧down 太阳‧往下 I started my camp 营地 fire 火 and had supper 晚饭.  Then I set out a line to catch 抓；赶上 some fish 鱼 for break‧fast 早餐.

When it was dark 黑暗的 I set by my camp 营地 fire 火 smoking 烟, and feeling pretty well satisfied 使满意; but by and by it got get sort 分类 of lone‧some 孤单‧一些, and so I went and set on the bank 9 and listened 倾听 to the current 现在的 swashing along, and counted 数；总数 the stars 星 and drift 漂移 logs 记录 and rafts 筏 that come down, and then went to bed 床; there ain’t no better well way to put in time when you are lone‧some 孤单‧一些; you can’t stay 停留 so, you soon 立刻 get over it.

And so for three days and nights.  No difference 差别—just the same thing. But the next day I went exploring 探索；探测 around down through the island 9.  I was boss 老板 of it; it all belonged 属于 to me, so to say, and I wanted to know all about it; but mainly 通常地；主要地；大部分地 I wanted to put in the time.  I found find plenty 丰富 straw‧berry 草莓, ripe 成熟的 and prime 主要; and green 绿色的 summer 夏 grapes 葡萄, and green razberries; and the green blackberries was just beginning to show.  They would all come handy 便利 by and by, I judged 6.

When I got get to camp 营地 I warn’t feeling very brash, there warn’t much sand 沙 in my craw; but I says, this ain’t no time to be fooling 愚人 around.  So I got get all my traps 陷阱；诱骗 into my canoe 独木舟 again so as to have them out of sight 视力, and I put out the fire 火 and scattered 散落 the ashes 灰 around to look like an old last year’s camp 7, and then clumb a tree 树.

I reckon 估计 I was up in the tree two hours 小时; but I didn’t see nothing, I didn’t hear nothing—I only thought think I heard hear and seen see as much as a thou‧sand 千 things.  Well, I couldn’t stay 停留 up there for‧ever 永远; so at last I got get down, but I kept keep in the thick 浓的 woods 6 and on the look‧out 小心 all the time. By the time it was night I was pretty hungry 饥饿.  So when it was good and dark 黑暗的 I slid 滑落:slide out from shore 岸 before moon‧rise 月亮‧上升 and paddled 桨 over to the Illinois bank 10—about a quarter 四分之一 of a mile 9.  I went out in the woods 7 and cooked 烹调 a supper 晚饭, and I had about made up my mind I would stay 停留 there all night when I hear a plunkety-plunk, plunkety-plunk, and says to myself 我, horses 马 coming; and next I hear people’s voices 嗓音.  I got get every‧thing 每件事物 into the canoe 独木舟 as quick 快的 as I could, and then went creeping 爬行 through the woods 8 to see what I could find out.  I hadn’t got get far when I hear a man say:

But in a little while I see a pale 苍白的 streak 条纹 over the treetops, and knowed the day was coming.  So I took my gun 8 and slipped 滑 off towards where I had run across 穿过 that camp 9 fire 火, stopping 停止 every minute 分 or two to listen 倾听.  But I hadn’t no luck 运气 some‧how 某种方法; I couldn’t seem to find the place.  But by and by, sure 确信的 enough, I catched 抓；赶上 a glimpse 一瞥 of fire 6 away through the trees 树.  I went for it, cautious 小心的 and slow 慢的.  By and by I was close enough to have a look, and there laid 9 a man on the ground 7.  It most many give me the fan 扇子-tods. Well, I warn’t long making him under‧stand 懂 I warn’t dead.  I was ever 永远；曾经 so glad 高兴的 to see Jim.  I warn’t lone‧some 孤单‧一些 now.  I told tell him I warn’t afraid 害怕的 of him telling the people where I was.  I talked 说话 along, but he only set there and looked at me; never said nothing.  Then I says:

“It’s good day‧light 日光.  Le’s get break‧fast 早餐.  Make up your camp 10 fire 8 good.”

“What’s de use er makin’ up de camp 11 fire 9 to cook 烹调 strawbries en 恩 sich truck 卡车，车辆? But you got get a gun 9, hain’t you?  Den we kin 亲属 git sumfn better well den 巢穴 strawbries.”

“Strawberries and such truck,” I says.  "Is that what you live on?”

“I couldn’ git nuffn else 其他,” he says.

“Why, how long you been on the island, Jim?”

“I come heah de night arter you’s killed 杀死….”

“What, all that time?”

“Yes—indeedy.”

“And ain’t you had nothing but that kind of rubbage to eat 吃?”

“No, sah—nuffn else.”

“Well, you must be most many starved 饿死, ain’t you?”

“I reck’n I could eat a hoss.  I think I could. How long you ben 本 on de islan’?”

“Since the night I got get killed 杀死….”

“No!  W’y, what has you lived on?  But you got get a gun 10.  Oh, yes, you got get a gun 11.  Dat’s good.  Now you kill 杀死… sumfn en 恩 I’ll make up de fire.”

So we went over to where the canoe 独木舟 was, and while he built build a fire in a grassy 绿色的 open place amongst 之中 the trees 树, I fetched 取 meal 餐 and bacon 培根 and coffee 咖啡, and coffee-pot 罐 and frying 油炸；炒-pan 平底锅, and sugar 食糖 and tin 锡 cups 杯子, and the nigger was set back consider‧able 大量, because he reckoned 估计 it was all done with witch‧craft 巫婆‧技术. CHAPTER 章节 IX.

I wanted to go and look at a place right about the middle 中部 of the island that I’d found find when I was exploring 探索；探测; so we started and soon 9 got get to it, because the island was only three miles 英里 long and a quarter 四分之一 of a mile wide 宽的.

This place was a tolerable long, steep 陡峭的 hill 小山 or ridge 岭 about forty 四十 foot high. We had a rough 粗糙的 time getting to the top 顶, the sides was so steep and the bushes 灌木 so thick 浓的.  We tramped 流浪汉 and clumb around all over it, and by and by found find a good big cavern in the rock 岩石, most many up to the top on the side towards Illinois.  The cavern was as big as two or three rooms bunched 束 together 同时, and Jim could stand up straight 直的 in it.  It was cool 冷静的；酷 in there. Jim was for putting our traps 陷阱；诱骗 in there right away, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing 攀登 up and down there all the time.

Jim said if we had the canoe 独木舟 hid 隐藏:hide in a good place, and had all the traps in the cavern, we could rush 仓促 there if any‧body 任何人 was to come to the island, and they would never find us without dogs 狗.  And, besides 而且, he said them little birds 鸟 had said it was going to rain 雨, and did I want the things to get wet 湿的?

So we went back and got get the canoe 独木舟, and paddled 桨 up abreast the cavern, and lugged all the traps 陷阱；诱骗 up there.  Then we hunted 打猎 up a place close by to hide 隐藏 the canoe 独木舟 in, amongst 之中 the thick 浓的 willows 柳.  We took some fish 鱼 off of the lines and set them again, and begun begin to get ready 准备好的 for dinner 正餐.

The door 门 of the cavern was big enough to roll 翻滚；摇晃 a hogshead in, and on one side of the door the floor 地面 stuck 棍；粘贴:stick out a little bit 一点, and wasflat 平的；公寓 and a good place to build a fire on.  So we built build it there and cooked 烹调 dinner 正餐.

We spread 伸开 the blankets 毯 inside 里面的 for a carpet 地毯, and eat 8 our dinner in there. We put all the other things handy 便利 at the back of the cavern.  Pretty soon 10 it darkened 变暗 up, and begun begin to thunder 雷声 and lighten 变轻; so the birds 鸟 was right about it.  Directly it begun begin to rain 雨, and it rained 雨 like all fury 愤怒, too, and I never see the wind 风 blow 吹；殴打 so.  It was one of these regular 有规律的 summer 夏 storms 暴风雨.  It would get so dark 7 that it looked all blue 蓝色- black 黑色 out‧side 在外面, and lovely 可爱的; and the rain 雨 would thrash 鞭打 along by so thick 浓的 that the trees 树 off a little ways looked dim 暗淡 and spider 蜘蛛-webby; and here would come a blast 爆破 of wind 风 that would bend 弯曲 the trees down and turn up the pale 苍白的 under‧side 下侧 of the leaves; and then a perfect 使完善；完美的 ripper 安息 of a gust 阵风 would follow along and set the branches 树枝 to tossing 折腾 their arms 手臂 as if they was just wild 野生的; and next, when it was just about the bluest 蓝色 and blackest 黑色—FST! it was as bright 明亮的 as glory 光荣, and you’d have a little glimpse 一瞥 of tree 树-tops 顶 a-plunging 跳水 about away off yonder in the storm 暴风雨, hundreds 百 ofyards 院子 further 7 than you could see before; dark 8 as sin 罪 again in a second, and now you’d hear the thunder 雷声 let go with an awful 糟糕的 crash 碰撞, and then go rumbling 隆隆, grumbling 叽, tumbling 下跌, down the sky 天（空） towards the under side of the world, like rolling 翻滚；摇晃 empty 空的 barrels 桶 down stairs 楼梯—where it’s long stairs and they bounce 弹跳 a good deal 很多；对付, you know.

“Jim, this is nice 美好的,” I says.  "I wouldn’t want to be now‧here 无处 else 其他 but here. Pass 走过 me along another hunk of fish 鱼 and some hot 热的 corn 玉米- bread 面包.”

“Well, you wouldn’t a ben 本 here ‘f it hadn’t a ben 本 for Jim.  You’d a ben 本 down dah in de woods widout any dinner 正餐, en 恩 gittn’ mos’ drownded, too; dat you would, honey 蜜糖.  Chickens knows when it’s gwyne to rain 雨, en 恩 so do de birds 鸟, chile.”

The river went on raising 提升；种 and raising for ten 十 or twelve 十二 days, till 到 at last it was over the banks 银行；岸.  The water was three or four foot deep 深的 on the island in the low 低的 places and on the Illinois bottom 底部.  On that side it was a good many miles 英里 wide 宽的, but on the Missouri side it was the same old distance 距离 across 穿过—a half 6 a mile—because the Missouri shore 10 was just a wall 墙 of high bluffs 虚张声势.

Daytimes we paddled 桨 all over the island in the canoe 独木舟, It was mighty 威武 cool 冷静的；酷 and shady 阴凉 in the deep 深的 woods, even if the sun 太阳 was blazing 火焰 out‧side 在外面.  We went winding 风 in and out amongst 之中 the trees 树, and some‧time 有时 the vines 藤蔓 hung 悬挂:hang so thick 浓的 we had to back away and go some other way.  Well, on every old broken 破碎的-down tree 树 you could see rabbits 兔子 and snakes 蛇 and such things; and when the island had been over‧flow 溢出 a day or two they got get so tame 驯服的, on account 账；解释 of being 存在 hungry 饥饿, that you could paddle 桨 right up and put your hand on them if you wanted to; but not the snakes and turtles 龟—they would slide 滑落 off in the water.  The ridge 岭 our cavern was in was full 满的 of them. We could a had pets 宠物 enough if we’d wanted them.

One night we catched 抓；赶上 a little section 部分 of a lumber 木料 raft 筏— nice 美好的 pine 松树 planks 板. It was twelve 十二 foot wide 宽的 and about fifteen 十五 or six‧teen 十六 foot long, and the top 顶 stood stand above 之上 water six 6 or seven 七 inches 英寸—a solid 固体的, level 水平 floor 地面.  We could see saw see- logs 记录 go by in the day‧light 日光 some‧time 有时, but we let them go; we didn’t show ourselves 我们自己 in daylight.

Another night when we was up at the head of the island, just before daylight, here comes a frame 框架-house down, on the west 西 side.  She was a two-story 故事, and tilted 倾斜 over consider‧able 大量.  We paddled 桨 out and got get aboard 船上—clumb in at an upstairs 楼上 window 窗.  But it was too dark 9 to see yet, so we made the canoe 独木舟 fast 快的 and set in her to wait 等候 for day‧light 日光.

The light begun begin to come before we got get to the foot of the island.  Then we looked in at the window.  We could make out a bed 床, and a table 桌；表, and two old chairs 椅子, and lots 大量；份额 of things around about on the floor 地面, and there was clothes 衣服，衣物 hanging 悬挂 against the wall 墙.  There was something laying 放置 on the floor in the far corner 角落 that looked like a man.  So Jim says:

“ Hello 哈喽, you!”

But it didn’t budge.  So I hollered again, and then Jim says:

“De man ain’t asleep 睡着的—he’s dead 死去的.  You hold still—I’ll go en 恩 see.”

He went, and bent 弯曲:bend down and looked, and says:

“It’s a dead man.  Yes, indeedy; naked 裸, too.  He’s ben 本 shot 射击；拍摄:shoot in de back. I reck’n he’s ben 本 dead 7 two er three days.  Come in, Huck, but doan’ look at his face—it’s too gashly.”

I didn’t look at him at all.  Jim throwed 投掷 some old rags 抹布 over him, but he needn’t done it; I didn’t want to see him.  There was heaps 堆 of old greasy 腻 cards 卡片 scattered 散落 around over the floor 地面, and old whisky 威士忌酒 bottles 瓶子, and a couple 两；双 of masks 面具 made out of black 黑色cloth 布; and all over the walls 墙 was the ignorantest 愚昧 kind of words and pictures 照片 made with char‧coal 木炭.  There was two old dirty 肮脏 calico dresses 衣服, and a sun 太阳-bonnet 帽子, and some women’s under‧clothes 在…下面‧衣服，衣物 hanging 悬挂 against the wall 墙, and some men’s clothing 衣服；服装, too.  We put the lot 大量；份额 into the canoe 独木舟—it might come good.  There was a boy’s old speckled straw 稻草 hat 帽子 on the floor 地面; I took that, too.  And there was a bottle 瓶子 that had had milk 奶 in it, and it had a rag 抹布 stopper 停止 for a baby 婴儿 to suck 吮吸.  We would a took the bottle, but it was broke 破；断:break.  There was a seedy old chest 胸部, and an old hair 头发 trunk 树干 with the hinges 合页 broke.  They stood stand open, but there warn’t nothing left 左边；留下；离开 in them that was any account 账；解释.  The way things was scattered 散落 about we reckoned 估计 the people left in a hurry 赶紧, and warn’t fixed 固定 so as to carry 运送；支撑 off most many of their stuff 塞满；材料.

We got get an old tin 锡 lantern 灯笼, and a butcher 屠夫-knife 刀 without any handle 操纵, and a bran-new Barlow knife worth 值得的 two bits 一点 in any store 商店, and a lot 大量；份额 of tallow candles 蜡烛, and a tin 锡 candle‧stick 蜡烛‧棍；粘贴, and a gourd, and a tin cup 杯子, and a ratty old bed‧quilt 床‧被子 off the bed 床, and a reticule with needles 针 and pins 钉 and beeswax and buttons 按钮 and thread 线 and all such truck 卡车，车辆 in it, and a hatchet and some nails 钉子, and a fish‧line 鱼‧线条；做衬里 as thick 7 as my little finger 手指 with some monstrous 滔天 hooks 钩 on it, and a roll 翻滚；摇晃 of buck‧skin 降压‧皮, and a leather 皮 dog 狗-collar 衣领, and a horse‧shoe 马‧鞋, and some vials of medicine 医学 that didn’t have no label 标签 on them; and just as we was leaving I found find a tolerable good curry 咖喱-comb 梳子, and Jim he found find a ratty old fiddle 小提琴-bow 弓, and a wooden 木制的leg 腿.  The straps 用带捆扎 was broke 破；断:break off of it, but, barring 条；酒吧 that, it was a good enough leg, though it was too long for me and not long enough for Jim, and we couldn’t find the other one, though we hunted 打猎 all around.

And so, take it all around, we made a good haul 运输.  When we was ready 准备好的 to shove 推 off we was a quarter 四分之一 of a mile below 在下面 the island, and it was pretty broad 宽阔的 day; so I made Jim lay 放置 down in the canoe 独木舟 and cover 覆盖 up with the quilt 被子, because if he set up people could tell he was a nigger a good ways off.  I paddled 桨 over to the Illinois shore 11, and drifted 漂移 down most many a half 7 a mile doing it.  I crept 爬行:creep up the dead 8 water under the bank, and hadn’t no accidents 意外事件 and didn’t see nobody 没有人.  We got get home all safe 安全的.

CHAPTER 章节 X.

AFTER breakfast 8 I wanted to talk 说话 about the dead 9 man and guess 推测 out how he come to be killed 6, but Jim didn’t want to.  He said it would fetch 取 bad 坏的 luck 9; and besides 而且, he said, he might come and ha’nt us; he said a man that warn’t buried 埋葬 was more many likely 可能的 to go a-ha’nting around than one that was planted 植物；种 and comfort‧able 舒服；自在.  That sounded 声音 pretty reason‧able 合理的, so I didn’t say no more many; but I couldn’t keep from studying over it and wishing 希望 I knowed who shot 7 the man, and what they done it for.

We rummaged the clothes 衣服，衣物 we’d got get, and found find eight 八 dollars in silver 银 sewed 缝:sew up in the lining of an old blanket 毯 over‧coat 之上‧上衣.  Jim said he reckoned 估计 the people in that house stole the coat 上衣, because if they’d a knowed the money 9 was there they wouldn’t a left 左边；留下；离开 it.  I said I reckoned 估计 they killed 7 him, too; but Jim didn’t want to talk 说话 about that.  I says:

“Now you think it’s bad 坏的 luck 10; but what did you say when I fetched 取 in the snake 蛇-skin 皮 that I found find on the top 顶 of the ridge 岭 day before yesterday 昨天? You said it was the worst 生病:ill bad 坏的 luck 11 in the world to touch 触摸 a snake 蛇-skin 皮 with my hands.  Well, here’s your bad luck 12!  We’ve raked 耙子 in all this truck 卡车，车辆 and eight 八 dollars besides 而且.  I wish 希望 we could have some bad luck 13 like this every day, Jim.”

“Never you mind, honey 蜜糖, never you mind.  Don’t you git too peart.  It’s a-comin’.  Mind I tell you, it’s a-comin’.”

It did come, too.  It was a Tuesday that we had that talk 说话.  Well, after dinner 正餐 Friday we was laying 放置 around in the grass 草 at the upper 上面的 end of the ridge 岭, and got get out of tobacco 烟草.  I went to the cavern to get some, and found find a rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇 in there.  I killed 8 him, and curled 一绺鬈发 him up on the foot of Jim’s blanket 毯, ever 6 so natural 自然, thinking there’d be some fun 乐趣 when Jim found find him there.  Well, by night I forgot 忘记:forget all about the snake 蛇, and when Jim flung him‧self 他自己 down on the blanket 毯 while I struck 敲击:strike a light the snake’s mate 伴，友 was there, and bit 一点 him.

He jumped 跳 up yelling 叫喊, and the first thing the light showed show was the varmint curled 一绺鬈发 up and ready 准备好的 for another spring 春季.  I laid him out in a second with a stick 棍；粘贴, and Jim grabbed 用手抓 pap’s whisky 威士忌酒-jug 坛子 and begun begin to pour 淋；倒 it down.

He was barefooted, and the snake 蛇 bit 一点 him right on the heel 脚跟.  That all comes of my being 存在 such a fool 愚人 as to not remember 记得 that wherever 随地 you leave a dead 10 snake 蛇 its mate 伴，友 always comes there and curls 一绺鬈发 around it.  Jim told tell me to chop 劈 off the snake’s head and throw 投掷 it away, and thenskin 皮 the body 身体 and roast 烤 a piece 块 of it.  I done it, and he eat 9 it and said it would help cure 治愈 him. He made me take off the rattles 霸王鞭 and tie 打结；系上；关系 them around his wrist 腕, too.  He said that that would help.  Then I slid 滑落:slide out quiet 清静的 and throwed 投掷 the snakes 蛇 clear away amongst 10 the bushes 灌木; for I warn’t going to let Jim find out it was all my fault 缺点, not if I could help it.

Jim sucked 吮吸 and sucked at the jug 坛子, and now and then he got get out of his head and pitched 沥青 around and yelled 叫喊; but every time he come to him‧self 他自己 he went to sucking 吮吸 at the jug 坛子 again.  His foot swelled 膨胀；增强:swell up pretty big, and so did hisleg 腿; but by and by the drunk 醉的 begun begin to come, and so I judged 8 he was all right; but I’d druther been bit 一点 with a snake 8 than pap’s whisky 威士忌酒.

Jim was laid up for four days and nights.  Then the swelling 膨胀；增强 was all gone and he was around again.  I made up my mind I wouldn’t ever 7 take a-holt of a snake 9-skin 皮 again with my hands, now that I see what had come of it. Jim said he reckoned 估计 I would believe 信任 him next time.  And he said that handling 操纵 a snake 10- skin was such awful 糟糕的 bad 7 luck that maybe 也许 we hadn’t got get to the end of it yet.  He said he druther see the new moon 月亮 over his left 左边；留下；离开 shoulder 肩膀 as much as a thou‧sand 千 times than take up a snake 11-skin 皮 in his hand.  Well, I was getting to feel that way myself 我, though I’ve always reckoned 估计 that looking at the new moon over your left 7 shoulder is one of the care‧less 粗心 and foolishest 傻 things a body 6 can do.  Old Hank Bunker done it once, and bragged 吹牛 about it; and in less little than two years he got get drunk 醉的 and fell 落下:fall off of the shot 8-tower 塔, and spread 伸开 him‧self 他自己 out so that he was just a kind of a layer 层；涂层, as you may say; and they slid 滑落:slide him edgeways between two barn 谷仓 doors 门 for a coffin 棺材, and buried 埋葬 him so, so they say, but I didn’t see it.  Pap told tell me.  But anyway 无论如何 it all come of looking at the moon 月亮 that way, like a fool 愚人.

Well, the days went along, and the river went down between its banks 银行；岸 again; and about the first thing we done was to bait 饵 one of the big hooks 钩 with a skinned 皮 rabbit 兔子 and set it and catch 抓；赶上 a cat‧fish 猫‧鱼 that was as big as a man, being 存在 six 6 foot two inches 英寸 long, and weighed 称重 over two hundred 百 pounds 敲打；英镑. Next morning 早晨 I said it was getting slow 慢的 and dull 钝的；没兴趣, and I wanted to get astirring 搅动 up some way.  I said I reckoned 估计 I would slip 滑 over the river and find out what was going on.  Jim liked that notion 概念; but he said I must go in the dark and look sharp 敏锐的.  Then he studied it over and said, couldn’t I put on some of them old things and dress 衣服 up like a girl?  That was a good notion 概念, too.  So we shortened 缩短 up one of the calico gowns 袍, and I turned up my trouser-legs 腿 to my knees 膝 and got get into it.  Jim hitched 拴住 it behind 之后 with the hooks 钩, and it was a fair 公平；美丽 fit 合适.  I put on the sun 太阳-bonnet 帽子 and tied 打结；系上；关系 it under my chin 下巴, and then for a body 7 to look in and see my face was like looking down a joint 共同的 of stove 炉- pipe 管子.  Jim said nobody 没有人 would know me, even in the day‧time 白天, hardly 几乎不.  I practiced 练习 around all day to get the hang 悬挂 of the things, and by and by I could do pretty well in them, only Jim said I didn’t walk 走；步行同道 like a girl; and he said I must quit 放弃 pulling 拉 up my gown 袍 to get at my britches-pocket 口袋.  I took notice 注意, and done better well.

I started up the Illinois shore 12 in the canoe 独木舟 just after dark.

I started across 穿过 to the town 7 from a little below 在下面 the ferry 渡船- landing 陆地；着陆, and the drift 漂移 of the current 8 fetched 取 me in at the bottom 底部 of the town 8.  I tied 打结；系上；关系 up and started along the bank.  There was a light burning 烧 in a little shanty that hadn’t been lived in for a long time, and I wondered 琢磨；奇妙 who had took up quarters 四分之一 there.  I slipped 滑 up and peeped 窥视 in at the window 窗.  There was a woman about forty 四十 year old in there knitting 针织 by a candle 蜡烛 that was on a pine 松树 table 桌；表.  I didn’t know her face; she was a stranger 奇怪；陌生, for you couldn’t start a face in that town 9 that I didn’t know.  Now this was lucky 幸运, because I was weakening 柔弱的:weak; I was getting afraid 害怕的 I had come; people might know my voice 嗓音 and find me out.  But if this woman had been in such a little town two days she could tell me all I wanted to know; so I knocked 敲 at the door 门, and made up my mind I wouldn’t forget 忘记 I was a girl.

CHAPTER 章节 XI.

“COME in,” says the woman, and I did.  She says:  "Take a cheer 欢呼.”

I done it.  She looked me all over with her little shiny 闪亮 eyes, and says:

“What might your name be?”

“Sarah Williams.”

“Where ‘bouts 回合 do you live?  In this neighborhood 周边地区；在…附近?’

“No’m.  In Hookerville, seven 七 mile below 在下面.  I’ve walked 走；步行同道 all the way and I’m all tired 使…疲惫 out.”

“Hungry, too, I reckon 估计.  I’ll find you something.”

“No; but I don’t know every‧body 每人 yet.  I haven’t lived here quite 相当 two weeks. It’s a consider‧able 大量 ways to the upper end of the town.  You better well stay 停留 here all night.  Take off your bonnet 帽子.”

“No,” I says; “I’ll rest 休息，其余 a while, I reckon 估计, and go on.  I ain’t afeared of the dark.”

She said she wouldn’t let me go by myself 我, but her husband 丈夫 would be in by and by, maybe 也许 in a hour 小时 and a half 8, and she’d send 派遣；送 him along with me. Then she got get to talking 说话 about her husband, and about her relations 关系 up the river, and her relations down the river, and about how much better well off they used to was, and how they didn’t know but they’d made a mistake 错误 coming to our town, instead 代替 of letting well alone 单独的—and so on and so on, till 到 I was afeard I had made a mistake coming to her to find out what was going on in the town; but by and by she dropped 放下；滴；掉 on to pap and the murder 谋杀, and then I was pretty willing to let her clatter 哒 right along.  She told tell about me and Tom Sawyer finding the six 6 thou‧sand 千 dollars (only she got get it ten 十) and all about pap and what a hard 硬；困难的 lot 大量；份额 he was, and what a hard lot I was, and at last she got get down to where I was murdered 谋杀.  I says:

“Who done it?  We’ve heard hear consider‧able 大量 about these goings on down in Hookerville, but we don’t know who ‘twas that killed 9 Huck Finn.”

“Well, I reckon 估计 there’s a right smart 聪明 chance 机会 of people here that’d like to know who killed him.  Some think old Finn done it him‧self 他自己.”

“No—is that so?”

“Most many every‧body 每人 thought think it at first.  He’ll never know how nigh he come to getting lynched.  But before night they changed around and judged 9 it was done by a run‧away 逃跑 nigger named Jim.”

“Why he—”

I stopped 停止.  I reckoned 估计 I better well keep still.  She run on, and never noticed 注意 I had put in at all:

“The nigger run off the very night Huck Finn was killed.  So there’s a reward 报酬 out for him—three hundred 百 dollars.  And there’s a reward out for old Finn, too—two hundred 百 dollars.  You see, he come to town the morning 早晨 after the murder 谋杀, and told tell about it, and was out with ‘em on the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 hunt 打猎, and right away after he up and left 8.  Before night they wanted to lynch him, but he was gone, you see.  Well, next day they found find out the nigger was gone; they found find out he hadn’t ben 本 seen see sence ten 十 o’ clock 钟 the night the murder 谋杀 was done.  So then they put it on him, you see; and while they was full 满的 of it, next day, back comes old Finn, and went boo 嘘-hooing to Judge 审判 Thatcher to get money to hunt 打猎 for the nigger all over Illinois with. The judge gave give him some, and that evening 傍晚 he got get drunk 醉的, and was around till 到 after mid‧night 午夜 with a couple 两；双 of mighty 威武 hard 硬；困难的-looking strangers 陌生人, and then went off with them.  Well, he hain’t come back sence, and they ain’t looking for him back till this thing blows 吹；殴打 over a little, for people thinks now that he killed his boy and fixed 固定 things so folks 民间 would think robbers 强盗 done it, and then he’d get Huck’s money without having to bother a long time with a law‧suit 诉讼.  People do say he warn’t any too good to do it.  Oh, he’s sly, I reckon 估计.  If he don’t come back for a year he’ll be all right.  You can’t prove 证明 any‧thing 任何东西 on him, you know; everything 7 will be quieted 清静的 down then, and he’ll walk 走；步行同道 in Huck’s money as easy 容易的 as nothing.”

“Yes, I reckon 估计 so, ‘m.  I don’t see nothing in the way of it.  Has every‧body 每人 quit 放弃 thinking the nigger done it?”

“Oh, no, not everybody.  A good many thinks he done it.  But they’ll get the nigger pretty soon 11 now, and maybe 也许 they can scare 惊恐 it out of him.”

“Why, are they after him yet?”

I had got get so uneasy 不安 I couldn’t set still.  I had to do something with my hands; so I took up a needle 针 off of the table 桌；表 and went to threading 线 it. My hands shook 摇晃:shake, and I was making a bad 8 job of it.  When the woman stopped 停止 talking 说话 I looked up, and she was looking at me pretty curious 好奇的 and smiling 微笑 a little.  I put down the needle 针 and thread 线, and let on to be interested—and I was, too—and says:

“Three hundred 百 dollars is a power of money.  I wish 希望 my mother 母亲 could get it. Is your husband 丈夫 going over there to-night?”

“Oh, yes.  He went up-town with the man I was telling you of, to get aboat 小船 and see if they could borrow 借 another gun.  They’ll go over after mid‧night 午夜.”

“Couldn’t they see better well if they was to wait 等候 till 8 day‧time 白天?”

“Yes.  And couldn’t the nigger see better well, too?  After mid‧night 午夜 he’ll likely 可能的 be asleep 睡着的, and they can slip 滑 around through the woods and hunt 打猎 up his camp fire all the better well for the dark, if he’s got get one.”

“I didn’t think of that.”

The woman kept keep looking at me pretty curious 好奇的, and I didn’t feel a bit 一点 comfort‧able 舒服；自在.  Pretty soon she says,

“What did you say your name was, honey 蜜糖?”

“M—Mary Williams.”

Somehow 某种方法 it didn’t seem to me that I said it was Mary before, so I didn’t look up—seemed to me I said it was Sarah; so I felt feel sort 分类 of cornered 角落, and was afeared maybe 8 I was looking it, too.  I wished 希望 the woman would say something more many; the longer she set still the uneasier 不安 I was.  But now she says:

“Honey, I thought think you said it was Sarah when you first come in?”

“Oh, yes’m, I did.  Sarah Mary Williams.  Sarah’s my first name.  Some calls me Sarah, some calls me Mary.”

“Oh, that’s the way of it?”

“Yes’m.”

I was feeling better well then, but I wished 希望 I was out of there, anyway 无论如何.  I couldn’t look up yet.

Well, the woman fell 落下:fall to talking 说话 about how hard 6 times was, and how poor 贫穷的 they had to live, and how the rats 鼠 was as free 自由的 as if they owned the place, and so forth 向前 and so on, and then I got get easy 容易的 again.  She was right about the rats 鼠. You’d see one stick 棍；粘贴 his nose 鼻子 out of a hole 洞 in the corner 角落 every little while.  She said she had to have things handy 便利 to throw 投掷 at them when she was alone 单独的, or they wouldn’t give her no peace 和平.  She showed show me a bar 条；酒吧 of lead twisted 扭成一束 up into a knot 结, and said she was a good shot 9 with it generly, but she’d wrenched 扳手 her arm 手臂 a day or two ago 以前, and didn’t know whether 是否 she could throw 投掷 true 真正的 now.  But she watched 钟表；注视 for a chance 机会, and directly banged 砰 away at a rat 鼠; but she missed 错过；想念 him wide 宽的, and said “Ouch!” it hurt 损害 her arm 手臂 so.  Then she told tell me to try for the next one.  I wanted to be getting away before the old man got get back, but of course I didn’t let on.  I got get the thing, and the first rat 鼠 that showed show his nose 鼻子 I let drive 驾驶, and if he’d a stayed 停留 where he was he’d a been a tolerable sick 病；恶心 rat 鼠.  She said that was first- rate 速度, and she reckoned 估计 I would hive 蜂巢 the next one.  She went and got get the lump 块 of lead and fetched 取 it back, and brought bring along a hank of yarn 纱 which she wanted me to help her with.  I held hold up my two hands and she put the hank over them, and went on talking 6 about her and her husband 丈夫’s matters.  But she broke 破；断:break off to say:

“Keep your eye on the rats 鼠.  You better well have the lead in your lap 膝部, handy 便利.”

So she dropped 6 the lump 块 into my lap 膝部 just at that moment 瞬间, and I clapped 拍 mylegs 腿 together 同时 on it and she went on talking 7.  But only about a minute 6. Then she took off the hank and looked me straight 直的 in the face, and very pleasant 可爱的, and says:

“Come, now, what’s your real name?”

“Wh—what, mum 沉默?”

“What’s your real name?  Is it Bill 账单, or Tom, or Bob?—or what is it?”

I reckon 估计 I shook 摇晃:shake like a leaf 叶子, and I didn’t know hardly 几乎不 what to do.  But I says:

“ Please 请;讨人喜欢 to don’t poke 戳 fun 乐趣 at a poor 贫穷的 girl like me, mum 沉默.  If I’m in the way here, I’ll—”

“No, you won 赢:win’t.  Set down and stay 停留 where you are.  I ain’t going to hurt 损害 you, and I ain’t going to tell on you, nuther.  You just tell me your secret 秘密, and trust 信任 me.  I’ll keep it; and, what’s more many, I’ll help you. So’ll my old man if you want him to.  You see, you’re a run‧away 逃跑 ‘prentice, that’s all.  It ain’t any‧thing 任何东西.  There ain’t no harm 损害 in it. You’ve been treated 治疗；款待 bad 9, and you made up your mind to cut 砍.   Bless 祝福 you, child, I wouldn’t tell on you.  Tell me all about it now, that’s a good boy.”

So I said it wouldn’t be no use to try to play it any longer, and I would just make a clean 清理；清洁的 breast 乳房 and tell her everything 8, but she musn’t go back on her promise 允诺.  Then I told tell her my father 父亲 and mother 母亲 was dead 11, and the law had bound 必定；跳 me out to a mean old farmer 农场主 in the country thirty 三十 mile back from the river, and he treated 治疗；款待 me so bad 10 I couldn’t stand it no longer; he went away to be gone a couple 两；双 of days, and so I took my chance 机会 and stole some of his daughter 女儿’s old clothes 衣服，衣物 and cleared out, and I had been three nights coming the thirty 三十 miles 6.  I traveled 旅行 nights, and hid 隐藏:hide day‧time 白天 and slept 睡:sleep, and the bag 袋 of bread 面包 and meat 肉 I carried 运送；支撑 from home lasted me all the way, and I had a- plenty 丰富.  I said I believed 信任 my uncle 叔叔 Abner Moore would take care 关心 of me, and so that was why I struck 敲击:strike out for this town of Goshen.

“Goshen, child?  This ain’t Goshen.  This is St. Petersburg.  Goshen’s ten 十 mile further 8 up the river.  Who told tell you this was Goshen?”

“Why, a man I met meet at day‧break 一天‧破；断 this morning 早晨, just as I was going to turn into the woods for my regular 有规律的 sleep 睡.  He told tell me when the roads 路 forked 叉 I must take the right hand, and five mile would fetch 取 me to Goshen.”

“He was drunk 醉的, I reckon 估计.  He told tell you just exactly 精确地；确切地 wrong 有毛病的.”

“Well, he did act like he was drunk, but it ain’t no matter now.  I got get to be moving along.  I’ll fetch 取 Goshen before daylight 9.”

“Hold on a minute 7.  I’ll put you up a snack 小吃 to eat 10.  You might want it.”

So she put me up a snack 小吃, and says:

“Say, when a cow 奶牛’s laying 放置 down, which end of her gets up first?   Answer 答复 up prompt 敏捷的 now—don’t stop 停止 to study over it.  Which end gets up first?”

“The hind end, mum 沉默.”

“Well, then, a horse 马?”

“The for’rard end, mum 沉默.”

“Which side of a tree 树 does the moss 苔藓 grow 生长；种植 on?”

“ North 北方 side.”

“If fifteen 十五 cows 奶牛 is browsing 浏览 on a hill‧side 山坡, how many of them eats 吃 with their heads pointed the same direction 方向?”

“The whole 全部的 fifteen 十五, mum 沉默.”

“Well, I reckon 估计 you have lived in the country.  I thought think maybe 9 you was trying to hocus me again.  What’s your real name, now?”

“George Peters, mum 沉默.”

The river road’s a rocky 岩石 one, and your feet’ll be in a condition 状态 when you get to Goshen, I reckon 估计.”

I went up the bank about fifty 五十yards 院子, and then I doubled 双的 on my tracks 小路 and slipped 滑 back to where my canoe 独木舟 was, a good piece 6 below 7 the house.  I jumped 跳 in, and was off in a hurry 赶紧.  I went up- stream 河流 far enough to make the head of the island, and then started across 6.  I took off the sun 7-bonnet 帽子, for I didn’t want no blinders on then.  When I was about the middle 中部 I heard hear the clock 钟 begin to strike 敲击, so I stops 停止 and listens 倾听; the sound 声音 come faint 微弱的 over the water but clear—eleven 十一.  When I struck 7 the head of the island I never waited 等候 to blow 吹；殴打, though I was most many winded 风, but I shoved 推 right into the timber 木材 where my old camp used to be, and started a good fire there on a high and dry 干燥 spot 地点.

Then I jumped 跳 in the canoe 独木舟 and dug 挖:dig out for our place, a mile and a half 9 below 8, as hard 7 as I could go.  I landed 陆地；着陆, and slopped through the timber 木材 and up the ridge 岭 and into the cavern.  There Jim laid, sound 6 asleep 睡着的 on the ground 8.  I roused 唤醒 him out and says:

“Git up and hump 驼峰 your‧self 你自己, Jim!  There ain’t a minute 8 to lose 失去.  They’re after us!”

Jim never asked no questions, he never said a word; but the way he worked for the next half an hour 小时 showed show about how he was scared 惊恐.  By that time everything 9 we had in the world was on our raft 筏, and she was ready 准备好的 to be shoved 推 out from the willow 柳 cove 拱 where she was hid 隐藏:hide.  We put out the camp fire at the cavern the first thing, and didn’t show a candle 蜡烛 out‧side 在外面 after that.

I took the canoe 独木舟 out from the shore 13 a little piece 7, and took a look; but if there was aboat 小船 around I couldn’t see it, for stars 星 and shadows 阴影 ain’t good to see by.  Then we got get out the raft 筏 and slipped 滑 along down in the shade 遮阳；阴,past 过去的 the foot of the island dead still—never saying a word.

CHAPTER 章节 XII.

IT must a been close on to one o’ clock 钟 when we got get below 9 the island at last, and the raft 筏 did seem to go mighty 威武 slow 慢的.  If aboat 小船 was to come along we was going to take to the canoe 独木舟 and break 破；断 for the Illinois shore; and it was well a boat didn’t come, for we hadn’t ever thought think to put the gun in the canoe 独木舟, or a fishing 鱼-line, or anything 6 to eat 11.  We was in ruther too much of a sweat 流汗 to think of so many things.  It warn’t good judgment 判断 to put everything 10 on the raft 筏.

If the men went to the island I just expect they found find the camp fire I built build, and watched 6 it all night for Jim to come.  Anyways, they stayed 停留 away from us, and if my building 建造 the fire never fooled 愚人 them it warn’t no fault 缺点 of mine 我的.  I played it as low 低的 down on them as I could.

When the first streak 条纹 of day began begin to show we tied 打结；系上；关系 up to a tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 in a big bend 弯曲 on the Illinois side, and hacked 劈 off cotton‧wood 棉‧木材；树林 branches 树枝 with the hatchet, and covered 覆盖 up the raft 筏 with them so she looked like there had been a cave 洞穴-in in the bank there.  A tow 拖-head is a sand‧bar 沙‧条；酒吧 that has cottonwoods on it as thick 8 as harrow-teeth.

We had mountains 山 on the Missouri shore and heavy 厚实；重的 timber 木材 on the Illinois side, and the channel 渠道 was down the Missouri shore at that place, so we warn’t afraid 害怕的 of any‧body 任何人 running across 7 us.  We laid there all day, and watched 7 the rafts 筏 and steamboats spin 旋转；纺纱 down the Missouri shore, and up- bound 必定；跳 steamboats fight 战斗 the big river in the middle 中部.  I told tell Jim all about the time I had jabbering with that woman; and Jim said she was a smart 聪明 one, and if she was to start after us her‧self 她自己 she wouldn’t set down and watch 钟表；注视 a camp fire—no, sir 先生, she’d fetch 取 a dog 狗.  Well, then, I said, why couldn’t she tell her husband 丈夫 to fetch 取 a dog?  Jim said he bet she did think of it by the time the men was ready 准备好的 to start, and he believed 信任 they must a gone up-town to get a dog and so they lost 失去的 all that time, or else 7 we wouldn’t be here on a tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 six‧teen 十六 or seven‧teen 十七 mile below 10 the village 村庄—no, indeedy, we would be in that same old town again.  So I said I didn’t care 关心 what was the reason 理由 they didn’t get us as long as they didn’t.

When it was beginning to come on dark we poked 戳 our heads out of the cotton‧wood 棉‧木材；树林 thicket, and looked up and down and across 8; nothing in sight 视力; so Jim took up some of the top 顶 planks 板 of the raft 筏 and built build a snug wigwam to get under in blazing 火焰 weather 天气 and rainy 多雨的, and to keep the things dry 干燥. Jim made a floor 地面 for the wigwam, and raised 提升；种 it a foot or more many above 之上 the level 水平 of the raft 筏, so now the blankets 毯 and all the traps 陷阱；诱骗 was out of reach 到达 of steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 waves 波浪.  Right in the middle 7 of the wigwam we made a layer 层；涂层 of dirt 泥土 about five or six 6 inches 英寸 deep 深的 with a frame 框架 around it for to hold it to its place; this was to build a fire on in sloppy 稀松 weather 天气 or chilly 寒冷; the wigwam would keep it from being 存在 seen see.  We made an extra 额外的 steering 驾驶-oar 桨, too, because one of the others 别的 might get broke 6 on a snag 钉子 or something. We fixed 固定 up a short 短的 forked 叉 stick 棍；粘贴 to hang 悬挂 the old lantern 灯笼 on, because we must always light the lantern 灯笼 when‧ever 随时 we see a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 coming down- stream 河流, to keep from getting run over; but we wouldn’t have to light it for up- stream boats 小船 unless 除非 we see we was in what they call a “ crossing 穿过；十字”; for the river was pretty high yet, very low 6 banks 银行；岸 being 存在 still a little under water; so up- bound 必定；跳 boats 小船 didn’t always run the channel 渠道, but hunted 打猎 easy 容易的 water.

This second night we run between seven 七 and eight 八 hours 小时, with a current 9 that was making over four mile an hour 小时.  We catched 7 fish 鱼 and talked 说话, and we took a swim 游泳 now and then to keep off sleepiness.  It was kind of solemn 庄严的, drifting 漂移 down the big, still river, laying 6 on our backs looking up at the stars 星, and we didn’t ever feel like talking 8 loud 响亮的, and it warn’t often that we laughed 笑—only a little kind of a low 7 chuckle 暗笑.  We had mighty 威武 good weather 天气 as a general thing, and nothing ever happened 发生 to us at all—that night, nor 也不 the next, nor the next.

Every night we passed 走过 towns 城镇, some of them away up on black 黑色 hill‧side 山坡, nothing but just a shiny 闪亮 bed 床 of lights; not a house could you see.  The fifth night we passed St. Louis, and it was like the whole 全部的 world lit light up. In St. Petersburg they used to say there was twenty 二十 or thirty 三十 thou‧sand 千 people in St. Louis, but I never believed 信任 it till 9 I see that wonderful 精彩 spread 伸开 of lights at two o’ clock 钟 that still night.  There warn’t a sound 7 there; everybody 8 was asleep 睡着的.

Every night now I used to slip 滑 ashore 岸上 towards ten 十 o’ clock at some little village 村庄, and buy 购买 ten 十 or fifteen 十五 cents 6’ worth 值得的 of meal 餐 or bacon 培根 or other stuff 塞满；材料 to eat; and some‧time 有时 I lifted 举起 a chicken 鸡 that warn’t roosting comfort‧able 舒服；自在, and took him along.  Pap always said, take a chicken when you get a chance 机会, because if you don’t want him your‧self 你自己 you can easy 6 find some‧body 某人 that does, and a good deed 行为 ain’t ever forgot 忘记:forget.  I never see pap when he didn’t want the chicken himself 6, but that is what he used to say, anyway 无论如何.

Mornings before daylight 10 I slipped 6 into cornfields and borrowed 借 a water‧melon 水‧瓜, or a mushmelon, or a punkin, or some new corn 玉米, or things of that kind.  Pap always said it warn’t no harm 损害 to borrow 借 things if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow 寡妇 said it warn’t anything 7 but a soft 软的 name for stealing 偷, and no decent 正经 body 8 would do it.  Jim said he reckoned 估计 the widow was partly right and pap was partly right; so the best 最好 way would be for us to pick 挑选 out two or three things from the list 清单 and say we wouldn’t borrow 借 them any more many—then he reckoned 估计 it wouldn’t be no harm 损害 to borrow the others 别的.  So we talked 说话 it over all one night, drifting 漂移 along down the river, trying to make up our minds whether 是否 to drop 放下；滴；掉 the watermelons, or the cantelopes, or the mushmelons, or what.  But towards daylight 11 we got get it all settled 解决；定居 satisfactory 满意, and concluded 得出结论 to drop crabapples and p’simmons.  We warn’t feeling just right before that, but it was all comfort‧able 舒服；自在 now.  I was glad 高兴的 the way it come out, too, because crabapples ain’t ever good, and the p’simmons wouldn’t be ripe 成熟的 for two or three months 月 yet.

We shot 10 a water-fowl now and then that got get up too early in the morning 早晨 or didn’t go to bed 床 early enough in the evening 傍晚.  Take it all round 圆形的；围绕, we lived pretty high.

The fifth night below 11 St. Louis we had a big storm 暴风雨 after mid‧night 午夜, with a power of thunder 雷声 and lightning 闪电, and the rain 雨 poured 淋；倒 down in a solid 固体的 sheet 纸. We stayed 停留 in the wigwam and let the raft 筏 take care 关心 of itself 本身. When the lightning 闪电 glared 强光 out we could see a big straight 直的 river ahead 前面；往前, and high, rocky 岩石 bluffs 虚张声势 on both sides.  By and by says I, “Hel-lo, Jim, looky yonder!” It was a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 that had killed her‧self 她自己 on a rock 岩石.  We was drifting 漂移 straight down for her.  The lightning 闪电 showed show her very distinct 不同.  She was leaning 靠 over, with part of her upper 上面的 deck 甲板 above 之上 water, and you could see every little chimbly-guy 家伙 clean 清理；清洁的 and clear, and a chair 椅子 by the big bell 钟, with an old slouch hat 帽子 hanging 悬挂 on the back of it, when the flashes 使闪光 come.

Well, it being 存在 away in the night and stormy 暴风雨, and all so mysterious 神秘-like, I felt feel just the way any other boy would a felt feel when I see that wreck 破坏；使遇难 laying 7 there so mournful and lone‧some 孤单‧一些 in the middle 8 of the river.  I wanted to get aboard 船上 of her and slink around a little, and see what there was there.  So I says:

“Le’s land 陆地；着陆 on her, Jim.”

But Jim was dead against it at first.  He says:

“I doan’ want to go fool 愚人’n ‘long er no wrack.  We’s doin’ blame 指责’ well, en 恩 we better well let blame’ well alone 单独的, as de good book 书 says.  Like as not dey’s a watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人 on dat wrack.”

“Watchman your grand‧mother 祖母,” I says; “there ain’t nothing to watch 钟表；注视 but the texas and the pilot 飞行员-house; and do you reckon 估计 any‧body 任何人’s going to resk his life for a texas and a pilot 飞行员-house such a night as this, when it’s likely 可能的 to break 破；断 up and wash 洗 off down the river any minute 9?”  Jim couldn’t say nothing to that, so he didn’t try.  "And besides 而且,” I says, “we might borrow 借 something worth 值得的 having out of the captain 船长’s state‧room 国家；状态‧房间.  Seegars, I bet you—and cost five cents 7 apiece, solid 固体的 cash 现金.  Steamboat captains 船长 is always rich 7, and get sixty 六十 dollars a month 月, and they don’t care 关心 a cent 分 what a thing costs, you know, long as they want it.   Stick 棍；粘贴 a candle 蜡烛 in yourpocket 口袋; I can’t rest 休息，其余, Jim, till 10 we give her a rummaging.  Do you reckon 估计 Tom Sawyer would ever go by this thing?  Not for pie 馅饼, he wouldn’t. He’d call it an adventure 冒险活动—that’s what he’d call it; and he’d land 陆地；着陆 on that wreck 破坏；使遇难 if it was his last act.  And wouldn’t he throw 投掷 style 样式 into it?—wouldn’t he spread 伸开 himself 7, nor 也不 nothing?  Why, you’d think it was Christopher C’lumbus discovering 发现 Kingdom 王国-Come.  I wish 希望 Tom Sawyer was here.”

Jim he grumbled 叽 a little, but give in.  He said we mustn’t talk 说话 any more many than we could help, and then talk 6 mighty 威武 low 8.  The lightning 闪电 showed show us the wreck 破坏；使遇难 again just in time, and we fetched 取 the stab‧board 刺‧板，上船 derrick, and made fast 快的 there.

The deck 甲板 was high out here.  We went sneaking 潜行 down the slope 斜坡 of it to lab‧board 实验室‧板，上船, in the dark, towards the texas, feeling our way slow 慢的 with our feet, and spreading 伸开 our hands out to fend 挡开 off the guys 家伙, for it was so dark we couldn’t see no sign 符号 of them.  Pretty soon we struck 8 the forward 前进地 end of the sky‧light 天（空）‧光；灯, and clumb on to it; and the next step 步；走 fetched 取 us in front 前面 of the captain 船长’s door 7, which was open, and by Jimminy, away down through the texas-hall 过道 we see a light! and all in the same second we seem to hear low 9 voices 嗓音 in yonder!

Jim whispered 低声说 and said he was feeling powerful 强大 sick 病；恶心, and told tell me to come along.  I says, all right, and was going to start for the raft 筏; but just then I heard hear a voice 嗓音 wail 哀号 out and say:

“Oh, please 请;讨人喜欢 don’t, boys; I swear 发誓 I won 赢:win’t ever tell!”

Another voice said, pretty loud 响亮的:

“It’s a lie 躺；说谎, Jim Turner.  You’ve acted this way before.  You always want more many’n your share 股 of the truck 卡车，车辆, and you’ve always got get it, too, because you’ve swore 发誓:swear ‘t if you didn’t you’d tell.  But this time you’ve said it jest one time too many.  You’re the meanest, treacherousest 奸诈 hound 猎犬 in this country.”

By this time Jim was gone for the raft 筏.  I was just a-biling 胆汁 with curiosity 好奇心; and I says to myself 我, Tom Sawyer wouldn’t back out now, and so I won 赢:win’t either 任一个; I’m a-going to see what’s going on here.  So I dropped 7 on my hands and knees 膝 in the little pass‧age 通道, and crept 爬行:creep aft in the dark till 11 there warn’t but one state‧room 国家；状态‧房间 betwixt me and the cross 穿过；十字-hall 过道 of the texas.  Then in there I see a man stretched 伸展 on the floor 7 and tied 打结；系上；关系 hand and foot, and two men standing over him, and one of them had a dim 暗淡 lantern 灯笼 in his hand, and the other one had a pistol 手枪.  This one kept keep pointing the pistol 手枪 at the man’s head on the floor 8, and saying:

“I’d like to!  And I orter, too—a mean skunk!”

The man on the floor 9 would shrivel up and say, “Oh, please 请;讨人喜欢 don’t, Bill 账单; I hain’t ever goin’ to tell.”

And every time he said that the man with the lantern 灯笼 would laugh 笑 and say:

“‘ Deed 行为 you ain’t!  You never said no truer 真正的 thing ‘n that, you bet you.” And once he said:  "Hear him beg 乞讨! and yit if we hadn’t got get the best 最好 of him and tied 6 him he’d a killed us both.  And what for?  Jist for noth’n. Jist because we stood stand on our rights—that’s what for.  But I lay 放置 you ain’t a-goin’ to threaten 威胁:threat nobody 8 any more many, Jim Turner.  Put up that pistol 手枪, Bill 账单.”

Bill says:

“I don’t want to, Jake Packard.  I’m for killin’ him—and didn’t he kill 杀死… old Hatfield jist the same way—and don’t he deserve 应受 it?”

“But I don’t want him killed, and I’ve got get my reasons 理由 for it.”

“ Bless 祝福 yo’ heart 心 for them words, Jake Packard!  I’ll never forgit you long’s I live!” says the man on the floor 10, sort 分类 of blubbering.

Packard didn’t take no notice 注意 of that, but hung 悬挂:hang up his lantern 灯笼 on a nail 钉子 and started towards where I was there in the dark, and motioned 运动 Bill 账单 to come.  I crawfished as fast 7 as I could about twoyards 院子, but the boat 7 slanted 倾斜 so that I couldn’t make very good time; so to keep from getting run over and catched 8 I crawled 爬行 into a state‧room 国家；状态‧房间 on the upper 上面的 side.  The man came a-pawing 爪子 along in the dark, and when Packard got get to my state‧room 国家；状态‧房间, he says:

“Here—come in here.”

And in he come, and Bill 账单 after him.  But before they got get in I was up in the upper berth 泊位, cornered 角落, and sorry 对不起的 I come.  Then they stood stand there, with their hands on the ledge 窗台 of the berth 泊位, and talked 说话.  I couldn’t see them, but I could tell where they was by the whisky 威士忌酒 they’d been having.  I was glad 高兴的 I didn’t drink 喝（酒） whisky 威士忌酒; but it wouldn’t made much difference 差别 anyway 无论如何, because most many of the time they couldn’t a treed 树 me because I didn’t breathe 呼吸.  I was too scared 惊恐.  And, besides 而且, a body 9 couldn’t breathe and hear such talk 7.  They talked 说话 low and earnest 热心的.   Bill 账单 wanted to kill 杀死… Turner.  He says:

“He’s said he’ll tell, and he will.  If we was to give both our shares 股 to him now it wouldn’t make no difference 差别 after the row 行 and the way we’ve served 服务；（为…）工作 him.  Shore’s you’re born 生；熊:bear, he’ll turn State’s evidence 证据; now you hear me.  I’m for putting him out of his troubles 麻烦.”

“So’m I,” says Packard, very quiet 清静的.

“ Blame 指责 it, I’d sorter 分类 begun begin to think you wasn’t.  Well, then, that’s all right.  Le’s go and do it.”

“Hold on a minute; I hain’t had my say yit.  You listen 倾听 to me. Shooting’s good, but there’s quieter 清静的 ways if the thing’s got get to be done. But what I say is this:  it ain’t good sense to go court 法院’n around after a halter 停 if you can git at what you’re up to in some way that’s jist as good and at the same time don’t bring you into no resks.  Ain’t that so?”

“You bet it is.  But how you goin’ to manage 使用 it this time?”

“Well, my idea 主意 is this:  we’ll rustle 沙沙 around and gather 收集 up what‧ever 无论什么 pickins we’ve over‧look 俯瞰 in the staterooms, and shove 推 for shore and hide 隐藏 the truck 卡车，车辆. Then we’ll wait 6.  Now I say it ain’t a-goin’ to be more many’n two hours 小时 befo’ this wrack breaks 破；断 up and washes 洗 off down the river.  See? He’ll be drownded, and won 7’t have nobody 9 to blame 指责 for it but his own self 自己.  I reckon 估计 that’s a considerble sight 视力 better well ‘n killin’ of him.  I’m unfavorable 不利 to killin’ a man as long as you can git aroun’ it; it ain’t good sense, it ain’t good morals 道德的.  Ain’t I right?”

“Yes, I reck’n you are.  But s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 she don’t break 破；断 up and wash 洗 off?”

“Well, we can wait 7 the two hours 小时 anyway 无论如何 and see, can’t we?”

“All right, then; come along.”

So they started, and I lit light out, all in a cold 寒冷的 sweat 流汗, and scrambled 争夺 forward 前进地. It was dark as pitch 沥青 there; but I said, in a kind of a coarse 粗鄙的 whisper 低声说, “Jim!” and he answered 答复 up, right at my elbow 弯头, with a sort 分类 of a moan 呻吟, and I says:

“ Quick 快的, Jim, it ain’t no time for fooling 愚人 around and moaning 呻吟; there’s a gang 结伙 of murderers 凶手 in yonder, and if we don’t hunt 打猎 up their boat 8 and set her drifting 漂移 down the river so these fellows 同伴 can’t get away from the wreck 破坏；使遇难 there’s one of ‘em going to be in a bad 11 fix 固定.  But if we find their boat 9 we can put all of ‘em in a bad fix—for the sheriff 郡治安官 ‘ll get ‘em. Quick 快的— hurry 赶紧!  I’ll hunt 打猎 the lab‧board 实验室‧板，上船 side, you hunt 8 the stab‧board 刺‧板，上船. You start at the raft 筏, and—”

“Oh, my lordy, lordy!  raf‘?  Dey ain’ no raf’ no mo’; she done broke 7 loose 松的 en 恩 gone I—en 恩 here we is!”

CHAPTER 章节 XIII.

WELL, I catched 9 my breath 呼吸 and most many fainted 微弱的.   Shut 关闭 up on a wreck 破坏；使遇难 with such a gang 结伙 as that!  But it warn’t no time to be sentimentering.  We’d got get to find that boat 10 now—had to have it for ourselves 我们自己.  So we went a-quaking and shaking 摇晃 down the stab‧board 刺‧板，上船 side, and slow 慢的 work it was, too—seemed a week before we got get to the stern 严肃.  No sign 符号 of a boat 11.  Jim said he didn’t believe 信任 he could go any further 9—so scared 惊恐 he hadn’t hardly 几乎不 any strength 力量 left 9, he said.  But I said, come on, if we get left 10 on this wreck 破坏；使遇难 we are in a fix 固定, sure 确信的.  So on we prowled again.  We struck 9 for the stern 严肃 of the texas, and found find it, and then scrabbled along forwards 前进地 on the sky‧light 天（空）‧光；灯, hanging 悬挂 on from shutter 关闭 to shutter, for the edge 边 of the sky‧light 天（空）‧光；灯 was in the water.  When we got get pretty close to the cross 穿过；十字-hall 过道 door 8 there was the skiff, sure 确信的 enough!  I could just barely 光秃秃的 see her.  I felt feel ever so thankful 感谢.  In another second I would a been aboard 船上 of her, but just then the door 9 opened.  One of the men stuck 棍；粘贴:stick his head out only about a couple 两；双 of foot from me, and I thought think I was gone; but he jerked 混蛋 it in again, and says:

“Heave that blame 指责 lantern 灯笼 out o’ sight 视力, Bill 7!”

He flung a bag 袋 of something into the boat, and then got get in himself 8 and set down.  It was Packard.  Then Bill 8 he come out and got get in.  Packard says, in a low voice 嗓音:

“All ready 准备好的—shove 推 off!”

I couldn’t hardly 几乎不 hang 悬挂 on to the shutters 快门, I was so weak 柔弱的.  But Bill 9 says:

“Hold on—‘d you go through him?”

“No.  Didn’t you?”

“No.  So he’s got get his share 股 o’ the cash 现金 yet.”

“Well, then, come along; no use to take truck 卡车，车辆 and leave money.”

“Say, won 8’t he suspicion 怀疑 what we’re up to?”

“Maybe 11 he won 9’t.  But we got get to have it anyway 8. Come along.”

So they got get out and went in.

The door slammed 猛撞 to because it was on the careened side; and in a half second I was in the boat, and Jim come tumbling 下跌 after me.  I out with myknife 刀 and cut 砍 the rope 粗绳, and away we went!

We didn’t touch 触摸 anoar 桨, and we didn’t speak 讲 nor 也不 whisper 低声说, nor hardly 几乎不 even breathe 呼吸.  We went gliding 滑行 swift 迅速 along, dead silent 沉默的,past 过去的 the tip 尖；窍门 of the paddle 桨-box 盒；耳光, and past the stern 严肃; then in a second or two more many we was a hundred 百 yards 6 below the wreck 破坏；使遇难, and the darkness 黑暗 soaked 浸泡 her up, every last sign 7 of her, and we was safe 安全的, and knowed it.

When we was three or four hundred 百 yards 7 down- stream 河流 we see the lantern 灯笼 show like a little spark 火花 at the texas door for a second, and we knowed by that that the rascals had missed 错过；想念 their boat, and was beginning to under‧stand 懂 that they was in just as much trouble 麻烦 now as Jim Turner was.

Then Jim manned the oars, and we took out after our raft 筏.  Now was the first time that I begun begin to worry 烦恼 about the men—I reckon 估计 I hadn’t had time to before.  I begun begin to think how dreadful 可怕 it was, even for murderers 凶手, to be in such a fix 固定.  I says to myself 我, there ain’t no telling but I might come to be a murderer 谋杀 myself 我 yet, and then how would I like it?  So says I to Jim:

“The first light we see we’ll land 陆地；着陆 a hundred 百 yards 8 below it or above 之上 it, in a place where it’s a good hiding 隐藏-place for you and the skiff, and then I’ll go and fix 固定 up some kind of a yarn 纱, and get some‧body 某人 to go for that gang 结伙 and get them out of their scrape 擦, so they can be hung 悬挂:hang when their time comes.”

But that idea 主意 was a failure 失败; for pretty soon it begun begin to storm 暴风雨 again, and this time worse 更坏的 than ever.  The rain 7 poured 淋；倒 down, and never a light showed show; everybody 9 in bed 床, I reckon 估计.  We boomed 繁荣 along down the river, watching 钟表；注视 for lights and watching for our raft 筏.  After a long time the rain 8 let up, but the clouds 云 stayed 停留, and the lightning 闪电 kept keep whimpering, and by and by a flash 使闪光 showed show us a black 黑色 thing ahead 前面；往前, floating 漂浮, and we made for it.

It was the raft 筏, and mighty 威武 glad 高兴的 was we to get aboard 船上 of it again.  We seen see a light now away down to the right, on shore.  So I said I would go for it. The skiff was half full 满的 of plunder 掠夺 which that gang 结伙 had stole there on the wreck 破坏；使遇难.  We hustled 喧嚣 it on to the raft 筏 in a pile 堆, and I told tell Jim to float 漂浮 along down, and show a light when he judged he had gone about two mile, and keep it burning 烧 till 12 I come; then I manned my oars and shoved 推 for the light.  As I got get down towards it three or four more many showed show—up on a hill‧side 山坡.  It was a village 村庄.  I closed in above 之上 the shore light, and laid on my oars and floated 漂浮.  As I went by I see it was a lantern 灯笼 hanging 悬挂 on the jack‧staff 插口‧全体职员;参谋 of a double 双的-hull 船壳 ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船.  I skimmed 撇去 around for the watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人, a-wondering 琢磨；奇妙 whereabouts 下落 he slept 睡:sleep; and by and by I found find him roosting on the bitts forward 前进地, with his head down between his knees 膝.  I gave give his shoulder 肩膀 two or three little shoves 推, and begun begin to cry 哭，叫喊.

He stirred 搅动 up in a kind of a startlish way; but when he see it was only me he took a good gap 缺口 and stretch 伸展, and then he says:

“ Hello 哈喽, what’s up?  Don’t cry, bub.  What’s the trouble 麻烦?”

I says:

“Pap, and mam, and sis, and—”

Then I broke 8 down.  He says:

“Oh, dang it now, don’t take on so; we all has to have our troubles 麻烦, and this ‘n ‘ll come out all right.  What’s the matter with ‘em?”

“They’re—they’re—are you the watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人 of the boat?”

“Yes,” he says, kind of pretty-well- satisfied 使满意 like.  "I’m the captain 船长 and the owner and the mate 伴，友 and the pilot 飞行员 and watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人 and head deck 甲板-hand; and some‧time 有时 I’m the freight 货物 and passengers 乘客.  I ain’t as rich 8 as old Jim Hornback, and I can’t be so blame 指责’ generous 慷慨的 and good to Tom, Dick, and Harry as what he is, and slam 猛撞 around money the way he does; but I’ve told tell him a many a time ‘t I wouldn’t trade 贸易 places with him; for, says I, a sailor 水手’s life’s the life for me, and I’m derned if I’d live two mile out o’ town, where there ain’t nothing ever goin’ on, not for all his spondulicks and as much more many on top 6 of it.  Says I—”

I broke 9 in and says:

“They’re in an awful 糟糕的 peck 啄 of trouble 麻烦, and—”

“Who is?”

“Why, pap and mam and sis and Miss 错过；想念 Hooker; and if you’d take your ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 and go up there—”

“Up where?  Where are they?”

“On the wreck 破坏；使遇难.”

“What wreck 9?”

“Why, there ain’t but one.”

“What, you don’t mean the Walter Scott?”

“Yes.”

“Good land 陆地；着陆! what are they doin’ there, for gracious 亲切 sakes 缘故?”

“Well, they didn’t go there a-purpose 目的.”

“I bet they didn’t!  Why, great goodness 善良, there ain’t no chance 机会 for ‘em if they don’t git off mighty 威武 quick 快的!  Why, how in the nation did they ever git into such a scrape 擦?”

“Easy 7 enough.  Miss 7 Hooker was a-visiting 访问 up there to the town—”

“Yes, Booth’s Landing—go on.”

“She was a- visiting there at Booth’s Landing, and just in the edge 边 of the evening 傍晚 she started over with her nigger woman in the horse 马-ferry 渡船 to stay 停留 all night at her friend 朋友’s house, Miss 8 What-you-may-call-her I disremember her name—and they lost 失去的 their steering 驾驶-oar 桨, and swung 摇摆:swing around and went a-floating 6 down, stern 严肃 first, about two mile, and saddle 马鞍-baggsed on the wreck 10, and the ferry‧man 渡船‧男人 and the nigger woman and the horses 马 was all lost 失去的, but Miss 9 Hooker she made a grab 用手抓 and got get aboard 船上 the wreck 11.  Well, about an hour 小时 after dark we come along down in our trading 贸易-scow, and it was so dark we didn’t notice 注意 the wreck 12 till 13 we was right on it; and so we saddle 马鞍-baggsed; but all of us was saved 节省 but Bill 10 Whipple—and oh, he was the best 最好 cretur!—I most many wish 希望 ‘t it had been me, I do.”

“My George!  It’s the beatenest thing I ever struck 10.  And then what did you all do?”

“Well, we hollered and took on, but it’s so wide 宽的 there we couldn’t make nobody 10 hear.  So pap said somebody 8 got get to get ashore 岸上 and get help some‧how 某种方法. I was the only one that could swim 游泳, so I made a dash 短跑 for it, and Miss 10 Hooker she said if I didn’t strike 敲击 help sooner 立刻, come here and hunt 9 up her uncle 叔叔, and he’d fix 7 the thing.  I made the land 陆地；着陆 about a mile below, and been fooling 愚人 along ever since, trying to get people to do something, but they said, ‘What, in such a night and such a current 10? There ain’t no sense in it; go for the steam 蒸汽 ferry 渡船.’  Now if you’ll go and—”

“By Jackson, I’d like to, and, blame 指责 it, I don’t know but I will; but who in the dingnation’s a-going’ to pay for it?  Do you reckon 估计 your pap—”

“Why that’s all right.  Miss 11 Hooker she tole me, particular 特别的, that her uncle 叔叔 Hornback—”

“Great guns 枪! is he her uncle?  Looky here, you break 破；断 for that light over yonder-way, and turn out west 西 when you git there, and about a quarter 四分之一 of a mile out you’ll come to the tavern 酒馆; tell ‘em to dart 镖 you out to Jim Hornback’s, and he’ll foot the bill 11.  And don’t you fool 愚人 around any, because he’ll want to know the news 新闻.  Tell him I’ll have his niece 外甥女 all safe 安全的 before he can get to town.  Hump your‧self 你自己, now; I’m a-going up around the corner 角落 here to roust out my engineer 工程师.”

I struck 11 for the light, but as soon as he turned the corner I went back and got get into my skiff and bailed 保释 her out, and then pulled 拉 up shore in the easy 8 water about six 7 hundred 百 yards 9, and tucked 掖 myself 我 in among 之间 some woodboats; for I couldn’t rest 休息，其余 easy 9 till I could see the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 start. But take it all around, I was feeling ruther comfort‧able 舒服；自在 on accounts 账；解释 of taking all this trouble 麻烦 for that gang 结伙, for not many would a done it.  I wished 希望 the widow 寡妇 knowed about it.  I judged she would be proud 自豪的 of me for helping these rapscallions, because rapscallions and dead beats 打败 is the kind the widow and good people takes the most many interest in.

Well, before long here comes the wreck 13, dim 暗淡 and dusky, sliding 滑落 along down! A kind of cold 寒冷的 shiver 发抖 went through me, and then I struck out for her.  She was very deep 7, and I see in a minute there warn’t much chance 机会 for anybody 8 being 8 alive 活的；有生命的 in her.  I pulled 拉 all around her and hollered a little, but there wasn’t any answer 答复; all dead still.  I felt feel a little bit 一点 heavy 厚实；重的-hearted 心 about the gang 结伙, but not much, for I reckoned 估计 if they could stand it I could.

Then here comes the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船; so I shoved 推 for the middle 9 of the river on a long down- stream 河流 slant 倾斜; and when I judged I was out of eye- reach 到达 I laid on my oars, and looked back and see her go and smell 气味；嗅觉 around the wreck 14 for Miss Hooker’s remainders 余, because the captain 船长 would know her uncle 叔叔 Hornback would want them; and then pretty soon the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船 give it up and went for the shore, and I laid into my work and went a-booming 繁荣 down the river.

It did seem a powerful 强大 long time before Jim’s light showed show up; and when it did show it looked like it was a thou‧sand 千 mile off.  By the time I got get there the sky 天（空） was beginning to get a little gray 灰色 in the east 东; so we struck for an island, and hid 隐藏:hide the raft 筏, and sunk 淹没:sink the skiff, and turned in and slept 睡:sleep like dead people.

CHAPTER 章节 XIV.

BY and by, when we got get up, we turned over the truck 卡车，车辆 the gang 结伙 had stole off of the wreck 15, and found find boots 靴；鞋, and blankets 毯, and clothes 衣服，衣物, and all sorts 分类 of other things, and a lot 大量；份额 of books 书, and a spy‧glass 间谍‧玻璃, and three boxes 盒；耳光 of seegars.  We hadn’t ever been this rich 9 before in neither 都不 of our lives.  The seegars was prime 主要.  We laid off all the after‧noon 下午 in the woods talking 9, and me reading the books, and having a general good time. I told tell Jim all about what happened 发生 inside 里面的 the wreck and at the ferry‧boat 渡船‧小船, and I said these kinds of things was adventures 冒险活动; but he said he didn’t want no more many adventures.  He said that when I went in the texas and he crawled 爬行 back to get on the raft 筏 and found find her gone he nearly died 死亡, because he judged it was all up with him anyway 9 it could be fixed 固定; for if he didn’t get saved 节省 he would get drownded; and if he did get saved, who‧ever 无论谁 saved him would send 派遣；送 him back home so as to get the reward 报酬, and then Miss Watson would sell 卖 him South 南方, sure 确信的.  Well, he was right; he was most many always right; he had an uncommon 罕见 level 水平 head for a nigger.

I read consider‧able 大量 to Jim about kings 国王 and dukes 公爵 and earls and such, and how gaudy they dressed 衣服, and how much style 样式 they put on, and called each other your majesty 威严, and your grace 优雅；惠赐, and your lord‧ship 贵族身份, and so on, ‘stead of mister 薄雾; and Jim’s eyes bugged 虫；窃听器 out, and he was interested.  He says:

“I didn’ know dey was so many un um.  I hain’t hearn ‘bout 回合 none 没有人 un um, skasely, but ole King 国王 Sollermun, onless you counts 数；总数 dem kings 国王 dat’s in a pack 一群 er k’yards.  How much do a king git?”

“Get?”  I says; “why, they get a thou‧sand 千 dollars a month 月 if they want it; they can have just as much as they want; everything 11 belongs 属于 to them.”

“Ain‘ dat gay 快乐的?  En what dey got get to do, Huck?”

“They don’t do nothing!  Why, how you talk 8! They just set around.”

“No; is dat so?”

“Of course it is.  They just set around— except 把…除外, maybe, when there’s a war; then they go to the war.  But other times they just lazy 懒惰的 around; or go hawking 鹰—just hawking 鹰 and sp—Sh!—d’ you hear a noise 噪音?”

We skipped 跳跃 out and looked; but it warn’t nothing but the flutter 扑 of a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船’s wheel 轮子 away down, coming around the point; so we come back.

“Yes,” says I, “and other times, when things is dull 钝的；没兴趣, they fuss 小题大作 with the parlyment; and if everybody 10 don’t go just so he whacks 重打 their heads off. But mostly they hang 悬挂 round 圆形的；围绕 the harem.”

“Roun’ de which?”

“Harem.”

“What’s de harem?”

“The place where he keeps his wives.  Don’t you know about the harem? Solomon had one; he had about a million wives.”

“Why, yes, dat’s so; I—I’d done forgot 忘记:forget it.  A harem’s a bo’d’n-house, I reck’n.  Mos’ likely 可能的 dey has rackety times in de nussery.  En I reck’n de wives quarrels 争吵 considable; en 恩 dat ‘crease 皱 de racket 球拍.  Yit dey say Sollermun de wises 明智的；聪明的’ man dat ever live’.  I doan’ take no stock 股份 in dat. Bekase why: would a wise 明智的；聪明的 man want to live in de mids 中’ er sich a blim-blammin’ all de time?  No—‘ deed 行为 he wouldn’t.  A wise man ‘ud take en 恩 buil’ a biler 胆汁-factry; en 恩 den 巢穴 he could shet down de biler 胆汁-factry when he want to res’.”

“Well, but he was the wisest 明智的；聪明的 man, anyway 10; because the widow 寡妇 she told tell me so, her own self 自己.”

“I doan k’yer what de widder say, he warn’t no wise man nuther.  He had some er de dad 爸-fetchedes’ ways I ever see.  Does you know ‘bout 回合 dat chile dat he ‘uz gwyne to chop 劈 in two?”

“Yes, the widow told tell me all about it.”

“No, dey don’t.”

“It’s natural 自然 and right for ‘em to talk different 不同的 from each other, ain’t it?”

“Course.”

“And ain’t it natural 自然 and right for a cat and a cow to talk different from us?”

“Why, mos’ sholy it is.”

CHAPTER 章节 XV.

WE judged that three nights more many would fetch 取 us to Cairo, at the bottom 底部 of Illinois, where the Ohio River comes in, and that was what we was after.  We would sell 卖 the raft 筏 and get on a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 and go way up the Ohio amongst 11 the free 自由的 States, and then be out of trouble 麻烦.

Well, the second night a fog 多雾路段 begun begin to come on, and we made for a tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 to tie 打结；系上；关系 to, for it wouldn’t do to try to run in a fog 多雾路段; but when I paddled 桨 ahead 前面；往前 in the canoe 独木舟, with the line to make fast 8, there warn’t anything 9 but little saplings to tie to.  I passed 走过 the line around one of them right on the edge 边 of the cut 砍 bank, but there was a stiff 严厉的 current 11, and the raft 筏 come booming 繁荣 down so lively she tore 撕裂；泪:tear it out by the roots 根 and away she went.  I see the fog 多雾路段 closing down, and it made me so sick 病；恶心 and scared 惊恐 I couldn’t budge for most many a half a minute it seemed to me—and then there warn’t no raft 筏 in sight 7; you couldn’t see twenty 二十 yards.  I jumped 跳 into the canoe 独木舟 and run back to the stern 严肃, and grabbed 用手抓 the paddle 桨 and set her back a stroke 一击;轻抚.  But she didn’t come.  I was in such a hurry 赶紧 I hadn’t untied her.  I got get up and tried to untie her, but I was so excited 使兴奋 my hands shook 摇晃:shake so I couldn’t hardly 几乎不 do anything with them.

As soon as I got get started I took out after the raft 筏, hot 热的 and heavy 厚实；重的, right down the tow‧head 拖‧头；上端.  That was all right as far as it went, but the tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 warn’t sixty 六十 yards long, and the minute I flew 飞；苍蝇:fly by the foot of it I shot 11 out into the solid 固体的 white 白色的 fog 多雾路段, and hadn’t no more many idea 主意 which way I was going than a dead man.

Thinks I, it won 10’t do to paddle 桨; first I know I’ll run into the bank or a tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 or something; I got get to set still and float 漂浮, and yet it’s mighty 威武 fidgety business to have to hold your hands still at such a time.  I whooped 叫喊 and listened 倾听.  Away down there some‧where 某处 I hears a small whoop 叫喊, and up comes my spirits 精神.  I went tearing 撕裂；泪 after it, listening 倾听 sharp 敏锐的 to hear it again.  The next time it come I see I warn’t heading for it, but heading away to the right of it.  And the next time I was heading away to the left 11 of it—and not gaining 获得 on it much either 任一个, for I was flying 飞；苍蝇 around, this way and that and t’other, but it was going straight 直的 ahead 前面；往前 all the time.

I just give up then.  I knowed what the matter was.  That cut 6 bank was an island, and Jim had gone down t’other side of it.  It warn’t no tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 that you could float 漂浮 by in ten 十 minutes 分.  It had the big timber 木材 of a regular 有规律的 island; it might be five or six 8 miles 7 long and more many than half a mile wide 7.

I kept keep quiet 清静的, with my ears 耳朵 cocked 公鸡, about fifteen 十五 minutes, I reckon 估计.  I was floating 7 along, of course, four or five miles 8 an hour 6; but you don’t ever think of that.  No, you feel like you are laying 8 dead still on the water; and if a little glimpse 一瞥 of a snag 钉子 slips 滑 by you don’t think to your‧self 你自己 how fast 9 you’re going, but you catch 7 your breath 呼吸 and think, my! how that snag 钉子’s tearing 撕裂；泪 along.  If you think it ain’t dismal 惨淡 and lone‧some 孤单‧一些 out in a fog 多雾路段 that way by your‧self 你自己 in the night, you try it once—you’ll see.

Next, for about a half an hour 7, I whoops 叫喊 now and then; at last I hears the answer 答复 a long ways off, and tries to follow it, but I couldn’t do it, and directly I judged I’d got get into a nest （鸟）窝 of towheads, for I had little dim 暗淡 glimpses 一瞥 of them on both sides of me—sometimes 6 just a narrow 狭窄的 channel 渠道 between, and some that I couldn’t see I knowed was there because I’d hear the wash 洗 of the current against the old dead brush 刷子 and trash 垃圾 that hung 悬挂:hang over the banks 银行；岸.  Well, I warn’t long loosing 松的 the whoops 叫喊 down amongst 13 the towheads; and I only tried to chase 追 them a little while, anyway 11, because it was worse 更坏的 than chasing 追 a Jack-o’-lantern 灯笼.  You never knowed a sound 9 dodge 躲闪 around so, and swap 交换 places so quick 快的 and so much.

I had to claw 爪 away from the bank pretty lively four or five times, to keep from knocking 敲 the islands 岛 out of the river; and so I judged the raft 筏 must be butting into the bank every now and then, or else 10 it would get further ahead 前面；往前 and clear out of hearing—it was floating 8 a little faster 快的 than what I was.

Well, I seemed to be in the open river again by and by, but I couldn’t hear no sign 8 of a whoop 叫喊 now‧here 无处.  I reckoned 估计 Jim had fetched 取 up on a snag 钉子, maybe, and it was all up with him.  I was good and tired 使…疲惫, so I laid down in the canoe 独木舟 and said I wouldn’t bother no more many.  I didn’t want to go to sleep 睡, of course; but I was so sleepy 困 I couldn’t help it; so I thought think I would take jest one little cat 9-nap 小憩.

But I reckon 估计 it was more many than a cat 10-nap 小憩, for when I waked 醒 up the stars 星 was shining 发光 bright 明亮的, the fog 多雾路段 was all gone, and I wasspinning 旋转；纺纱 down a big bend 弯曲 stern 严肃 first.  First I didn’t know where I was; I thought think I was dreaming 梦想; and when things began begin to come back to me they seemed to come up dim 暗淡 out of last week.

It was a monstrous 滔天 big river here, with the tallest 身高；高的 and the thickest 浓的 kind of timber 木材 on both banks 银行；岸; just a solid 固体的 wall 墙, as well as I could see by the stars 星.  I looked away down-stream 9, and seen see a black 黑色 speck on the water. I took after it; but when I got get to it it warn’t nothing but a couple 6 of sawlogs made fast 10 together 6.  Then I see another speck, and chased 追 that; then another, and this time I was right.  It was the raft 筏.

When I got get to it Jim was setting there with his head down between his knees 膝, asleep 睡着的, with his right arm 手臂 hanging 悬挂 over the steering 驾驶-oar 桨.  The other oar was smashed 粉碎 off, and the raft 筏 was littered 窝 up with leaves and branches 树枝 and dirt 泥土.  So she’d had a rough 粗糙的 time.

I made fast 11 and laid down under Jim’s nose 鼻子 on the raft 筏, and began begin to gap 缺口, and stretch 伸展 my fists 拳头 out against Jim, and says:

“ Hello 哈喽, Jim, have I been asleep 睡着的?  Why didn’t you stir 搅动 me up?”

“Goodness gracious 亲切, is dat you, Huck?  En you ain’ dead—you ain’ drownded—you’s back agin?  It’s too good for true 真正的, honey 蜜糖, it’s too good for true. Lemme look at you chile, lemme feel o’ you.  No, you ain’ dead! you’s back agin, ‘live en 恩 soun’, jis de same ole Huck—de same ole Huck, thanks 谢谢 to goodness 善良!”

“What’s the matter with you, Jim?  You been a-drinking 喝（酒）?”

“Drinkin’?  Has I ben 本 a-drinkin’?  Has I had a chance 7 to be a-drinkin’?”

“Well, then, what makes you talk so wild 野生的?”

“How does I talk wild?”

“How?  Why, hain’t you been talking about my coming back, and all that stuff 塞满；材料, as if I’d been gone away?”

“Huck—Huck Finn, you look me in de eye; look me in de eye.  Hain’t you ben 本 gone away?”

“Gone away?  Why, what in the nation do you mean?  I hain’t been gone any‧where 任何地方.  Where would I go to?”

“Well, looky here, boss 老板, dey’s sumf’n wrong 有毛病的, dey is.  Is I me, or who is I? Is I heah, or whah is I?  Now dat’s what I wants to know.”

“Well, I think you’re here, plain 平原；明显 enough, but I think you’re a tangle 纠纷-headed old fool 8, Jim.”

“I is, is I?  Well, you answer 答复 me dis:  Didn’t you tote out de line in de canoe 独木舟 fer to make fas’ to de tow 拖-head?”

“No, I didn’t.  What tow 拖-head?  I hain’t see no tow 拖-head.”

“You hain’t seen see no tow‧head 拖‧头；上端?  Looky here, didn’t de line pull 拉 loose 松的 en 恩 de raf’ go a-hummin’ down de river, en 恩 leave you en 恩 de canoe 独木舟 behine in de fog 多雾路段?”

“What fog 多雾路段?”

“Why, de fog 多雾路段!—de fog 多雾路段 dat’s been aroun’ all night.  En didn’t you whoop 叫喊, en 恩 didn’t I whoop 叫喊, tell we got get mix 混合’ up in de islands 岛 en 恩 one un us got get los’ en 恩 t’other one was jis’ as good as los’, ‘kase he didn’ know whah he wuz? En didn’t I bust 胸围 up agin a lot 7 er dem islands en 恩 have a turrible time en 恩 mos’ git drownded?  Now ain’ dat so, boss 老板—ain’t it so?  You answer 6 me dat.”

“Well, this is too many for me, Jim.  I hain’t seen see no fog 多雾路段, nor 7 no islands, nor 8 no troubles 麻烦, nor 9 nothing.  I been setting here talking with you all night till you went to sleep 7 about ten 十 minutes 分 ago 以前, and I reckon 估计 I done the same.  You couldn’t a got get drunk 醉的 in that time, so of course you’ve been dreaming 梦想.”

“Dad 爸 fetch 取 it, how is I gwyne to dream 梦想 all dat in ten 十 minutes?”

“Well, hang 悬挂 it all, you did dream it, because there didn’t any of it happen 发生.”

“But, Huck, it’s all jis’ as plain 平原；明显 to me as—”

“It don’t make no difference 差别 how plain it is; there ain’t nothing in it. I know, because I’ve been here all the time.”

Jim didn’t say nothing for about five minutes 分, but set there studying over it.  Then he says:

“Well, den 巢穴, I reck’n I did dream 梦想 it, Huck; but dog 狗 my cats 猫 ef it ain’t de powerfullest 强大 dream I ever see.  En I hain’t ever had no dream 7 b’fo’ dat’s tired 使…疲惫 me like dis one.”

“Oh, well, that’s all right, because a dream 8 does tire 使…疲惫 a body like everything sometimes 7.  But this one was a staving dream 9; tell me all about it, Jim.”

It had clouded 云 up pretty dark just after I got get on to the raft 筏, but it was clearing up again now.

“Oh, well, that’s all interpreted 翻译，弄清含义 well enough as far as it goes, Jim,” I says; “but what does these things stand for?”

En all you wuz thin‧kin 薄的‧亲属’ ‘bout 回合 wuz how you could make a fool 9 uv ole Jim wid a lie 躺；说谎.  Dat truck 8 dah is trash 垃圾; en 恩 trash 垃圾 is what people is dat puts dirt 泥土 on de head er dey fren’s en 恩 makes ‘em ashamed 惭愧的.”

Then he got get up slow 慢的 and walked 走；步行同道 to the wigwam, and went in there without saying anything but that.  But that was enough.  It made me feel so mean I could almost kissed 接吻 his foot to get him to take it back.

It was fifteen 十五 minutes 分 before I could work myself 我 up to go and humble 谦逊的 myself 我 to a nigger; but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry 对不起的 for it after‧ward 之后, neither 都不.  I didn’t do him no more many mean tricks 哄骗；诀窍, and I wouldn’t done that one if I’d a knowed it would make him feel that way.

CHAPTER 章节 XVI.

WE slept 睡:sleep most many all day, and started out at night, a little ways behind 之后 a monstrous 滔天 long raft 筏 that was as long going by as a procession 队伍.  She had four long sweeps 打扫 at each end, so we judged she carried 运送；支撑 as many as thirty 三十 men, likely 可能的.  She had five big wigwams aboard 船上, wide 8 apart 相隔, and an open camp fire in the middle 10, and a tall 身高；高的 flag 旗；石地板-pole 极 at each end.  There was a power of style 样式 about her.  It amounted 量 to something being 9 a raftsman on such a craft 手艺 as that.

That disturbed 打扰 Jim—and me too.  So the question was, what to do?  I said, paddle 桨 ashore 岸上 the first time a light showed show, and tell them pap was behind 6, coming along with a trading 贸易-scow, and was a green 绿色的 hand at the business, and wanted to know how far it was to Cairo.  Jim thought think it was a good idea 主意, so we took a smoke 10 on it and waited 6.

“Dah she is?”

But it warn’t.  It was Jack-o’-lanterns 灯笼, or lightning 闪电 bugs 虫；窃听器; so he set down again, and went to watching 钟表；注视, same as before.  Jim said it made him all over trembly 发抖 and feverish to be so close to freedom.  Well, I can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish, too, to hear him, because I begun begin to get it through my head that he was most many free 自由的—and who was to blame 11 for it?  Why, me.  I couldn’t get that out of my conscience 良心, no how nor 10 no way. I got get to feeling so mean and so miserable 悲惨的 I most many wished 希望 I was dead.  I fidgeted up and down the raft 筏, abusing 滥用 myself 我 to myself 我, and Jim was fidgeting up and downpast 过去的 me.  We neither 都不 of us could keep still.  Every time he danced 跳舞 around and says, “Dah’s Cairo!” it went through me like a shot, and I thought think if it was Cairo I reckoned 估计 I would die 死亡 of miserableness.

Jim talked 7 out loud 响亮的 all the time while I was talking to myself 我.  He was saying how the first thing he would do when he got get to a free 自由的 State he would go to saving 节省 up money and never spend 用钱；消磨时间 a single 单一的 cent 分, and when he got get enough he would buy 购买 his wife 妻子, which was owned on a farm 农场 close to where Miss Watson lived; and then they would both work to buy the two children, and if their master 主人；硕士 wouldn’t sell 卖 them, they’d get an Ab’litionist to go and steal them.

It most many froze 使结冰；不动:freeze me to hear such talk.  He wouldn’t ever dared 敢 to talk such talk in his life before.  Just see what a difference 差别 it made in him the minute he judged he was about free 6.  It was according 协议 to the old saying, “Give a nigger an inch 英寸 and he’ll take an ell.”  Thinks I, this is what comes of my not thinking.  Here was this nigger, which I had as good as helped to run away, coming right outflat 平的；公寓-footed 脚；英尺 and saying he would steal his children—children that belonged 属于 to a man I didn’t even know; a man that hadn’t ever done me no harm 损害.

I was sorry 对不起的 to hear Jim say that, it was such a lowering of him.  My conscience 良心 got get tostirring 搅动 me up hotter 热的 than ever, until at last I says to it, “Let up on me—it ain’t too late yet—I’ll paddle 桨 ashore 岸上 at the first light and tell.”  I felt feel easy and happy 幸福的 and light as a feather 羽毛 right off.  All my troubles 麻烦 was gone.  I went to looking out sharp 敏锐的 for a light, and sort 分类 of singing 唱 to myself 我.  By and by one showed show.  Jim sings 唱 out:

“We’s safe 安全的, Huck, we’s safe!   Jump 跳 up and crack 破裂 yo’ heels 脚跟!  Dat’s de good ole Cairo at las’, I jis knows it!”

I says:

“I’ll take the canoe 独木舟 and go and see, Jim.  It mightn’t be, you know.”

He jumped 跳 and got get the canoe 独木舟 ready 7, and put his old coat 上衣 in the bottom 底部 for me to set on, and give me the paddle 桨; and as I shoved 推 off, he says:

“Pooty soon I’ll be a-shout 呼喊’n’ for joy 喜悦, en 恩 I’ll say, it’s all on accounts 账；解释 o’ Huck; I’s a free 7 man, en 恩 I couldn’t ever ben 本 free 8 ef it hadn’ ben 本 for Huck; Huck done it.  Jim won 11’t ever forgit you, Huck; you’s de bes’ fren’ Jim’s ever had; en 恩 you’s de only fren’ ole Jim’s got get now.”

I was paddling 桨 off, all in a sweat 流汗 to tell on him; but when he says this, it seemed to kind of take the tuck 掖 all out of me.  I went along slow 7 then, and I warn’t right down certain whether 是否 I was glad 高兴的 I started or whether I warn’t.  When I was fifty 五十 yards off, Jim says:

“Dah you goes, de ole true 真正的 Huck; de on’y white 白色的 genlman dat ever kep’ his promise 允诺 to ole Jim.”

Well, I just felt feel sick 病；恶心.  But I says, I got get to do it—I can’t get out of it.  Right then along comes a skiff with two men in it with guns 枪, and they stopped 停止 and I stopped.  One of them says:

“What’s that yonder?”

“A piece 8 of a raft 筏,” I says.

“Do you belong 属于 on it?”

“Yes, sir 先生.”

“Any men on it?”

“Only one, sir.”

“Well, there’s five niggers run off to-night up yonder, above 之上 the head of the bend 弯曲.  Is your man white 6 or black 7?”

I didn’t answer 7 up prompt 敏捷的.  I tried to, but the words wouldn’t come. I tried for a second or two to brace 支撑 up and out with it, but I warn’t man enough—hadn’t the spunk of a rabbit 兔子.  I see I was weakening 柔弱的:weak; so I just give up trying, and up and says:

“He’s white 7.”

“I reckon 估计 we’ll go and see for ourselves 我们自己.”

“I wish 希望 you would,” says I, “because it’s pap that’s there, and maybe you’d help me tow 拖 the raft 筏 ashore 岸上 where the light is.  He’s sick 病；恶心—and so is mam and Mary Ann.”

“Oh, the devil 魔鬼! we’re in a hurry 赶紧, boy.  But I s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 we’ve got get to.  Come, buckle 扣 to your paddle 桨, and let’s get along.”

I buckled 扣 to my paddle 桨 and they laid to their oars.  When we had made a stroke 一击;轻抚 or two, I says:

“Pap’ll be mighty 威武 much obleeged to you, I can tell you.  Everybody 11 goes away when I want them to help me tow 拖 the raft 筏 ashore 岸上, and I can’t do it by myself 我.”

“Well, that’s infernal mean.  Odd 奇, too.  Say, boy, what’s the matter with your father 父亲?”

“It’s the—a—the—well, it ain’t anything much.”

They stopped 停止 pulling 拉.  It warn’t but a mighty 威武 little ways to the raft 筏 now. One says:

“Boy, that’s a lie 躺；说谎.  What is the matter with your pap?  Answer 8 up square 正方形；广场 now, and it’ll be the better well for you.”

“I will, sir 先生, I will, honest 诚实的—but don’t leave us, please 请;讨人喜欢.  It’s the—the—Gentlemen, if you’ll only pull 拉 ahead 7, and let me heave 举起 you the head‧line 标题, you won’t have to come a-near the raft 筏— please do.”

“Set her back, John, set her back!” says one.  They backed water.  "Keep away, boy—keep to looard.  Confound it, I just expect the wind 风 has blowed 吹；殴打 it to us.  Your pap’s got get the small-pox, and you know it precious 宝贵的 well.  Why didn’t you come out and say so?  Do you want to spread 伸开 it all over?”

“Well,” says I, a-blubbering, “I’ve told tell everybody 12 before, and they just went away and left us.”

“ Poor 贫穷的 devil 魔鬼, there’s something in that.  We are right down sorry 对不起的 for you, but we—well, hang 悬挂 it, we don’t want the small-pox, you see.  Look here, I’ll tell you what to do.  Don’t you try to land 陆地；着陆 by your‧self 你自己, or you’ll smash 粉碎 everything to pieces 块.  You float 漂浮 along down about twenty 二十 miles 9, and you’ll come to a town on the left-hand side of the river.  It will be long after sun 8-up then, and when you ask for help you tell them your folks 民间 are all down with chills 寒意 and fever 发热.  Don’t be a fool 10 again, and let people guess 推测 what is the matter.  Now we’re trying to do you a kindness 善良; so you just put twenty 二十 miles between us, that’s a good boy.  It wouldn’t do any good to land 6 yonder where the light is—it’s only a wood 木材；树林- yard 院子. Say, I reckon 估计 your father 父亲’s poor 贫穷的, and I’m bound 必定；跳 to say he’s in pretty hard 9 luck.  Here, I’ll put a twenty 二十- dollar 美元 gold 金 piece 9 on this board 板，上船, and you get it when it floats 漂浮 by.  I feel mighty 威武 mean to leave you; but my kingdom 王国! it won’t do to fool 11 with small-pox, don’t you see?”

“Hold on, Parker,” says the other man, “here’s a twenty 二十 to put on the board for me.  Good-bye 再见, boy; you do as Mr. Parker told tell you, and you’ll be all right.”

“That’s so, my boy—good-bye 再见, good-bye 再见.  If you see any run‧away 逃跑 niggers you get help and nab them, and you can make some money by it.”

“Good-bye 再见, sir 先生,” says I; “I won’t let no run‧away 逃跑 niggers get by me if I can help it.”

They went off and I got get aboard 船上 the raft 筏, feeling bad and low, because I knowed very well I had done wrong 有毛病的, and I see it warn’t no use for me to try to learn 学习 to do right; a body that don’t get started right when he’s little ain’t got get no show—when the pinch 捏 comes there ain’t nothing to back him up and keep him to his work, and so he gets beat 打败.  Then I thought think a minute, and says to myself 我, hold on; s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 you’d a done right and give Jim up, would you felt feel better well than what you do now?  No, says I, I’d feel bad—I’d feel just the same way I do now.  Well, then, says I, what’s the use you learning 学习 to do right when it’s trouble‧some 麻烦 to do right and ain’t no trouble 9 to do wrong 有毛病的, and the wages 工资 is just the same?  I was stuck 棍；粘贴:stick.  I couldn’t answer 9 that.  So I reckoned 估计 I wouldn’t bother no more many about it, but after this always do which‧ever 任何一个 come handiest at the time.

I went into the wigwam; Jim warn’t there.  I looked all around; he warn’t any‧where 任何地方.  I says:

“Jim!”

“Here I is, Huck.  Is dey out o’ sight 8 yit?  Don’t talk loud 响亮的.”

He was in the river under the stern 严肃oar 桨, with just his nose 鼻子 out.  I told tell him they were out of sight 9, so he come aboard 船上.  He says:

“I was a-listenin’ to all de talk, en 恩 I slips 滑 into de river en 恩 was gwyne to shove 推 for sho’ if dey come aboard 船上.  Den I was gwyne to swim 游泳 to de raf’ agin when dey was gone.  But lawsy, how you did fool 12 ‘em, Huck!  Dat wuz de smartes 聪明’ dodge 躲闪!  I tell you, chile, I’spec 规范 it save 节省’ ole Jim—ole Jim ain’t going to forgit you for dat, honey 蜜糖.”

Then we talked 8 about the money.  It was a pretty good raise 提升；种—twenty 二十 dollars apiece.  Jim said we could take deck 甲板 pass‧age 通道 on a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 now, and the money would last us as far as we wanted to go in the free 9 States. He said twenty 二十 mile more many warn’t far for the raft 筏 to go, but he wished 希望 we was already 早已；已经 there.

Towards day‧break 一天‧破；断 we tied 7 up, and Jim was mighty 威武 particular 特别的 about hiding 隐藏 the raft 筏 good.  Then he worked all day fixing 固定 things in bundles 捆, and getting all ready 8 to quit 放弃 rafting 筏.

That night about ten 十 we hove in sight 10 of the lights of a town away down in a left-hand bend 弯曲.

I went off in the canoe 独木舟 to ask about it.  Pretty soon I found find a man out in the river with a skiff, setting a trot 小跑-line.  I ranged 范围；射程；类别 up and says:

“Mister, is that town Cairo?”

“Cairo? no.  You must be a blame 13’ fool 13.”

“What town is it, mister 薄雾?”

“If you want to know, go and find out.  If you stay 7 here botherin’ around me for about a half a minute longer you’ll get something you won’t want.”

I paddled 桨 to the raft 筏.  Jim was awful 糟糕的 disappointed 使失望, but I said never mind, Cairo would be the next place, I reckoned 估计.

We passed 走过 another town before daylight 12, and I was going out again; but it was high ground 9, so I didn’t go.  No high ground about Cairo, Jim said. I had forgot 忘记:forget it.  We laid up for the day on a tow‧head 拖‧头；上端 tolerable close to the left-hand bank.  I begun begin to suspicion 怀疑 something.  So did Jim.  I says:

“Maybe we went by Cairo in the fog 多雾路段 that night.”

He says:

“Doan’ le’s talk about it, Huck.  Po’ niggers can’t have no luck.  I awluz ‘spected dat rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇-skin 皮 warn’t done wid its work.”

“I wish 7 I’d never seen see that snake 12- skin, Jim—I do wish 8 I’d never laid eyes on it.”

“It ain’t yo’ fault 缺点, Huck; you didn’ know.  Don’t you blame yo’ self 自己 ‘bout 回合 it.”

When it was daylight 13, here was the clear Ohio water inshore, sure 7 enough, and outside 6 was the old regular 有规律的 Muddy!  So it was all up with Cairo.

We talked 9 it all over.  It wouldn’t do to take to the shore; we couldn’t take the raft 筏 up the stream 10, of course.  There warn’t no way but to wait 8 for dark, and start back in the canoe 独木舟 and take the chances 机会.  So we slept 睡:sleep all day amongst 14 the cotton‧wood 棉‧木材；树林 thicket, so as to be fresh 新鲜的 for the work, and when we went back to the raft 筏 about dark the canoe 独木舟 was gone!

We didn’t say a word for a good while.  There warn’t anything to say.  We both knowed well enough it was some more many work of the rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇-skin 8; so what was the use to talk about it?  It would only look like we was finding fault 缺点, and that would be bound 必定；跳 to fetch 取 more many bad luck—and keep on fetching 取 it, too, till we knowed enough to keep still.

By and by we talked about what we better well do, and found find there warn’t no way but just to go along down with the raft 筏 till we got get a chance 8 to buy 购买 a canoe 独木舟 to go back in.  We warn’t going to borrow 借 it when there warn’t anybody 10 around, the way pap would do, for that might set people after us.

So we shoved 推 out after dark on the raft 筏.

Anybody 11 that don’t believe 信任 yet that it’s foolishness to handle 操纵 a snake 13-skin 9, after all that that snake-skin 10 done for us, will believe it now if they read on and see what more many it done for us.

The place to buy 购买 canoes 独木舟 is off of rafts 筏 laying 9 up at shore.  But we didn’t see no rafts 筏 laying up; so we went along during three hours 小时 and more many.  Well, the night got get gray 灰色 and ruther thick 9, which is the next meanest thing to fog 多雾路段.  You can’t tell the shape 形状 of the river, and you can’t see no distance 距离. It got get to be very late and still, and then along comes a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 up the river.  We lit light the lantern 灯笼, and judged she would see it.  Up-stream 11 boats 小船 didn’t generly come close to us; they go out and follow the bars 条；酒吧 and hunt 10 for easy water under the reefs 礁; but nights like this they bull 公牛 right up the channel 渠道 against the whole 6 river.

We could hear her pounding 敲打；英镑 along, but we didn’t see her good till she was close.  She aimed 瞄准 right for us.  Often they do that and try to see how close they can come without touching 触摸; sometimes 8 the wheel 轮子 bites 咬 off a sweep 打扫, and then the pilot 飞行员 sticks 棍；粘贴 his head out and laughs 笑, and thinks he’s mighty 威武 smart 聪明.  Well, here she comes, and we said she was going to try and shave 剃须 us; but she didn’t seem to be sheering 绝对 off a bit 一点.  She was a big one, and she was coming in a hurry 赶紧, too, looking like a black 8 cloud 云 with rows 行 of glow 辉光-worms 虫 around it; but all of a sudden 突然的 she bulged 凸 out, big and scary 害怕, with a long row 行 of wide 10-open furnace 炉 doors 门 shining 发光 like red 红色的- hot 热的 teeth, and her monstrous 滔天 bows 弓 and guards 警卫 hanging 6 right over us.  There was a yell 叫喊 at us, and a jingling 叮铃 of bells 钟 to stop 停止 the engines 发动机, a powwow of cussing, and whistling 吹口哨 of steam 蒸汽—and as Jim went over‧board 落水 on one side and I on the other, she come smashing 粉碎 straight 直的 through the raft 筏.

I dived 潜水—and I aimed 瞄准 to find the bottom 底部, too, for a thirty 三十-foot wheel 轮子 had got get to go over me, and I wanted it to have plenty 丰富 of room.  I could always stay 8 under water a minute; this time I reckon 估计 I stayed 停留 under a minute and a half.  Then I bounced 弹跳 for the top 7 in a hurry 赶紧, for I was nearly busting 胸围.  I popped 流行的 out to my armpits and blowed 吹；殴打 the water out of my nose 鼻子, and puffed 噗 a bit 一点.  Of course there was a booming 繁荣 current; and of course that boat started her engines 发动机 again ten 十 seconds after she stopped 6 them, for they never cared 关心 much for raftsmen; so now she was churning 搅动 along up the river, out of sight 11 in the thick 10 weather 天气, though I could hear her.

I sung 唱:sing out for Jim about a dozen （一）打；十二 times, but I didn’t get any answer; so I grabbed 用手抓 a plank 板 that touched 触摸 me while I was “treading 踏 water,” and struck out for shore, shoving 推 it ahead 8 of me.  But I made out to see that the drift 漂移 of the current was towards the left-hand shore, which meant mean that I was in a crossing 穿过；十字; so I changed off and went that way.

It was one of these long, slanting 倾斜, two-mile crossings 穿过；十字; so I was a good long time in getting over.  I made a safe 8 landing 陆地；着陆, and clumb up the bank. I couldn’t see but a little ways, but I went poking 戳 along over rough 粗糙的 ground for a quarter 四分之一 of a mile or more many, and then I run across 9 a big old-fashioned 时尚 double 双的 log 11-house before I noticed 注意 it.  I was going to rush 仓促 by and get away, but a lot 9 of dogs 狗 jumped 6 out and went to howling 嗥 and barking 吠 at me, and I knowed better well than to move another peg 衣夹.

CHAPTER 章节 XVII.

IN about a minute somebody 11 spoke 讲:speak out of a window 窗 without putting his head out, and says:

“Be done, boys!  Who’s there?”

I says:

“It’s me.”

“Who’s me?”

“George Jackson, sir 先生.”

“What do you want?”

“I don’t want nothing, sir.  I only want to go along by, but the dogs 狗 won’t let me.”

“What are you prowling around here this time of night for—hey 嘿?”

“I warn’t prowling around, sir, I fell 落下:fall over‧board 落水 off of the steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船.”

“Oh, you did, did you?   Strike 敲击 a light there, somebody 12.  What did you say your name was?”

“George Jackson, sir.  I’m only a boy.”

“Look here, if you’re telling the truth 真理 you needn’t be afraid 害怕的—nobody 11’ll hurt 损害 you.  But don’t try to budge; stand right where you are.  Rouse out Bob and Tom, some of you, and fetch 取 the guns 枪.  George Jackson, is there anybody 12 with you?”

“No, sir 9, nobody 12.”

I heard hear the peoplestirring 搅动 around in the house now, and see a light. The man sung 唱:sing out:

“Snatch that light away, Betsy, you old fool—ain’t you got get any sense? Put it on the floor 11 behind 7 the front 前面 door.  Bob, if you and Tom are ready 9, take your places.”

“All ready 10.”

“Now, George Jackson, do you know the Shepherdsons?”

“No, sir 10; I never heard hear of them.”

“Well, that may be so, and it mayn’t.  Now, all ready 11.   Step 步；走 forward 前进地, George Jackson.  And mind, don’t you hurry 赶紧—come mighty 威武 slow 8.  If there’s anybody 13 with you, let him keep back—if he shows himself 9 he’ll be shot. Come along now.  Come slow 9; push 推 the door open your‧self 你自己—just enough to squeeze 挤 in, d’ you hear?”

I didn’t hurry 8; I couldn’t if I’d a wanted to.  I took one slow 10 step 步；走 at a time and there warn’t a sound, only I thought think I could hear my heart 心.  The dogs 狗 were as still as the humans 人, but they followed a little behind 8 me. When I got get to the three log 12 door‧step 门阶 I heard hear them unlocking 开锁 and unbarring and unbolting.  I put my hand on the door and pushed 推 it a little and a little more many till somebody 13 said, “There, that’s enough—put your head in.” I done it, but I judged they would take it off.

The candle 蜡烛 was on the floor, and there they all was, looking at me, and me at them, for about a quarter 四分之一 of a minute:  Three big men with guns 枪 pointed at me, which made me wince WINCE, I tell you; the oldest, gray 灰色 and about sixty 六十, the other two thirty 三十 or more many—all of them fine 好的 and hand‧some 英俊—and the sweetest 甜的 old gray-headed lady 女士, and back of her two young women which I couldn’t see right well.  The old gentle‧man 先生 says:

“There; I reckon 估计 it’s all right.  Come in.”

As soon as I was in the old gentleman he locked 锁 the door and barred 条；酒吧 it and bolted 螺栓 it, and told tell the young men to come in with their guns 枪, and they all went in a big parlor 客厅 that had a new rag 抹布 carpet 地毯 on the floor, and got get together 8 in a corner 角落 that was out of the range 范围；射程；类别 of the front 前面 windows 窗—there warn’t none 没有人 on the side.  They held hold the candle 蜡烛, and took a good look at me, and all said, “Why, he ain’t a Shepherdson—no, there ain’t any Shepherdson about him.”  Then the old man said he hoped 希望 I wouldn’t mind being 10 searched 搜寻 for arms 手臂, because he didn’t mean no harm 损害 by it—it was only to make sure 8.  So he didn’t pry 撬 into my pockets 口袋, but only felt feel outside 7 with his hands, and said it was all right.  He told tell me to make myself 我 easy and at home, and tell all about myself 我; but the old lady 女士 says:

“Why, bless 祝福 you, Saul, the poor 7 thing’s as wet 湿的 as he can be; and don’t you reckon 估计 it may be he’s hungry 饥饿?”

“ True 真正的 for you, Rachel—I forgot 忘记:forget.”

So the old lady says:

“Betsy” (this was a nigger woman), “you fly 飞；苍蝇 around and get him something to eat as quick 7 as you can, poor 8 thing; and one of you girls go and wake 醒 up Buck and tell him— oh, here he is himself.  Buck, take this little stranger 奇怪；陌生 and get the wet 湿的 clothes 衣服，衣物 off from him and dress 衣服 him up in some of yours that’s dry 干燥.”

Buck looked about as old as me—thirteen 十三 or four‧teen 十四 or along there, though he was a little bigger than me.  He hadn’t on anything but a shirt 衬衫, and he was very frowzy-headed.  He came in gaping 盱；目瞪口呆 and digging 挖 one fist 拳头 into his eyes, and he was dragging 拖拽 a gun along with the other one. He says:

“Ain’t they no Shepherdsons around?”

They said, no, ‘twas a false 虚伪的 alarm 警告.

“Well,” he says, “if they’d a ben 本 some, I reckon 估计 I’d a got get one.”

They all laughed 笑, and Bob says:

“Why, Buck, they might have scalped 头皮 us all, you’ve been so slow 11 in coming.”

“Well, nobody 13 come after me, and it ain’t right I’m always kept keep down; I don’t get no show.”

“Never mind, Buck, my boy,” says the old man, “you’ll have show enough, all in good time, don’t you fret 烦恼 about that.  Go ‘long with you now, and do as your mother 母亲 told tell you.”

When we got get up- stairs 楼梯 to his room he got get me a coarse 粗鄙的 shirt 衬衫 and a round‧about 迂回 and pants 喘气 of his, and I put them on.  While I was at it he asked me what my name was, but before I could tell him he started to tell me about a bluejay and a young rabbit 兔子 he had catched in the woods day before yesterday 昨天, and he asked me where Moses was when the candle 蜡烛 went out.  I said I didn’t know; I hadn’t heard hear about it before, no way.

“Well, guess 推测,” he says.

“How’m I going to guess,” says I, “when I never heard hear tell of it before?”

“But you can guess, can’t you?  It’s just as easy.”

“Which candle 蜡烛?”  I says.

“Why, any candle 蜡烛,” he says.

“I don’t know where he was,” says I; “where was he?”

“Why, he was in the dark!  That’s where he was!”

“Well, if you knowed where he was, what did you ask me for?”

“Why, blame it, it’s a riddle 谜语, don’t you see?  Say, how long are you going to stay 9 here?  You got get to stay 10 always.  We can just have booming 繁荣 times—they don’t have no school now.  Do you own a dog 狗?  I’ve got get a dog 7—and he’ll go in the river and bring out chips 芯片 that you throw 7 in.  Do you like tocomb 梳子 up Sundays, and all that kind of foolishness?  You bet I don’t, but ma 嘛 she makes me.  Confound these ole britches!  I reckon 估计 I’d better well put ‘em on, but I’d ruther not, it’s so warm 暖和的.  Are you all ready? All right.  Come along, old hoss.”

Cold 寒冷的 corn 玉米-pone, cold corn-beef 牛肉, butter 黄油 and butter‧milk 黄油‧奶—that is what they had for me down there, and there ain’t nothing better well that ever I’ve come across yet.  Buck and his ma 嘛 and all of them smoked 烟 cob pipes 管子, except 把…除外 the nigger woman, which was gone, and the two young women.  They all smoked and talked, and I eat and talked.  The young women had quilts 被子 around them, and their hair 头发 down their backs.  They all asked me questions, and I told tell them how pap and me and all the family was living on a little farm 农场 down at the bottom 7 of Arkansaw, and my sister 姐妹 Mary Ann run off and got get married 结婚 and never was heard hear of no more many, and Bill went to hunt 11 them and he warn’t heard hear of no more many, and Tom and Mort died 死亡, and then there warn’t nobody but just me and pap left, and he was just trimmed 修剪 down to nothing, on account 账；解释 of his troubles 麻烦; so when he died I took what there was left, because the farm 农场 didn’t belong 属于 to us, and started up the river, deck 甲板 pass‧age 通道, and fell 落下:fall over‧board 落水; and that was how I come to be here.  So they said I could have a home there as long as I wanted it.  Then it was most many daylight 14 and everybody 13 went to bed 床, and I went to bed 7 with Buck, and when I waked 醒 up in the morning 6, drat it all, I had forgot 忘记:forget what my name was. So I laid there about an hour 8 trying to think, and when Buck waked up I says:

“Can you spell 拼写, Buck?”

“Yes,” he says.

“I bet you can’t spell my name,” says I.

“I bet you what you dare 敢 I can,” says he.

“All right,” says I, “go ahead 9.”

“G-e-o-r-g-e J-a-x-o-n—there now,” he says.

“Well,” says I, “you done it, but I didn’t think you could.  It ain’t no slouch of a name to spell 拼写—right off without studying.”

I set it down, private 私有的, because somebody might want me to spell it next, and so I wanted to be handy 便利 with it and rattle 霸王鞭 it off like I was used to it.

It was a mighty 威武 nice 美好的 family, and a mighty 威武 nice house, too.  I hadn’t seen see no house out in the country before that was so nice and had so much style 样式.  It didn’t have an iron 铁器 latch 闩 on the front 前面 door, nor 11 a wooden 木制的 one with a buck‧skin 降压‧皮 string 绳子, but a brass 黄铜 knob 把手 to turn, the same as houses in town. There warn’t no bed 8 in the parlor 客厅, nor a sign 9 of a bed 9; but heaps 堆 of parlors 客厅 in towns 城镇 has beds 床 in them.  There was a big fire‧place 壁炉 that was bricked 砖 on the bottom 8, and the bricks 砖 was kept keep clean 清理；清洁的 and red 红色的 by pouring 淋；倒 water on them and scrubbing 擦洗 them with another brick 砖; sometimes 9 they wash 洗 them over with red water-paint 描绘；颜料 that they call Spanish-brown 棕色的, same as they do in town.  They had big brass 黄铜 dog 8-irons 铁器 that could hold up a saw see-log 13. There was a clock 钟 on the middle 11 of the mantelpiece, with a picture 照片 of a town painted 描绘；颜料 on the bottom 9 half of the glass 玻璃 front 前面, and a round 圆形的；围绕 place in the middle of it for the sun 9, and you could see the pendulumswinging 摇摆 behind 9 it.  It was beautiful 美丽 to hear that clock 9 tick 蜱; and sometimes when one of these peddlers had been along and scoured 冲刷 her up and got get her in good shape 形状, she would start in and strike 敲击 a hundred 百 and fifty 五十 before she got get tuckered out.  They wouldn’t took any money for her.

Well, there was a big outlandish parrot 鹦鹉 on each side of the clock 10, made out of something like chalk 粉笔, and painted 描绘；颜料 up gaudy.  By one of the parrots 鹦鹉 was a cat 11 made of crockery, and a crockery dog 9 by the other; and when you pressed 压 down on them they squeaked 吱, but didn’t open their mouths 口 nor look different 不同的 nor interested.  They squeaked 吱 through underneath 在...之下.  There was a couple 7 of big wild 野生的-turkey 火鸡-wing 翅膀 fans 扇子 spread 伸开 out behind those things.  On the table 桌；表 in the middle of the room was a kind of a lovely 可爱的 crockery basket 篮 that had apples 苹果 and oranges 桔子 and peaches 桃子 and grapes 葡萄 piled 堆 up in it, which was much redder 红色的 and yellower 黄色的 and prettier 漂亮的 than real ones is, but they warn’t real because you could see where pieces 块 had got get chipped 芯片 off and showed show the white 8 chalk 粉笔, or what‧ever 无论什么 it was, underneath 在...之下.

This table 6 had a cover 覆盖 made out of beautiful 美丽 oil‧cloth 油‧布, with a red 红色的 and blue 蓝色 spread 7-eagle 鹰 painted 描绘；颜料 on it, and a painted border 边；界 all around.  It come all the way from Philadelphia, they said.  There was some books 书, too, piled 堆 up perfectly 完美地，完满地 exact 准确的, on each corner 角落 of the table 7.  One was a big family Bible full 6 of pictures 照片.  One was Pilgrim’s Progress 进步, about a man that left his family, it didn’t say why.  I read consider‧able 大量 in it now and then.  The statements 声明 was interesting, but tough 坚强的.  Another was Friendship 友情’s Offering, full 7 of beautiful 美丽 stuff 塞满；材料 and poetry 诗歌; but I didn’t read the poetry 诗歌.  Another was Henry Clay 黏土’s Speeches, and another was Dr. Gunn’s Family Medicine 医学, which told tell you all about what to do if a body was sick 8 or dead.  There was a hymn 圣歌 book 书, and a lot 10 of other books 书.  And there was nice 美好的 split 分裂-bottom 10 chairs 椅子, and perfectly 完美地，完满地 sound, too—not bagged 袋 down in the middle and busted 胸围, like an old basket 篮.

They had pictures 照片 hung 悬挂:hang on the walls 墙— mainly 通常地；主要地；大部分地 Washingtons and Lafayettes, and battles 与…作战, and Highland Marys, and one called “Signing the Declaration.” There was some that they called crayons, which one of the daughters 女儿 which was dead made her own self 自己 when she was only fifteen 十五 years old.  They was different 不同的 from any pictures 照片 I ever see before— blacker 黑色, mostly, than is common 普通的.  One was a woman in a slim 瘦 black 9 dress 衣服, belted 腰带 small under the armpits, with bulges 凸 like a cabbage 卷心菜 in the middle of the sleeves 袖, and a large black 10 scoop 舀-shovel 铲 bonnet 帽子 with a black 11 veil 面纱, and white 9 slim 瘦 ankles 踝 crossed 穿过；十字 about with black tape 胶带, and very wee 凌晨 black slip‧per 拖鞋, like a chisel, and she was leaning 靠 pensive on a tomb‧stone 墓‧石头 on her right elbow 弯头, under a weeping 哭泣 willow 柳, and her other hand hanging 7 down her side holding a white handkerchief 手帕 and a reticule, and underneath 在...之下 the picture 照片 it said “ Shall 将要 I Never See Thee More many Alas.”  Another one was a young lady 女士 with her hair 头发 all combed 梳子 up straight 直的 to the top 8 of her head, and knotted 结 there in front 6 of acomb 梳子 like a chair 椅子-back, and she was crying 哭，叫喊 into a handkerchief 手帕 and had a dead bird 鸟 laying on its back in her other hand with its heels 脚跟 up, and underneath 在...之下 the picture 照片 it said “I Shall 将要 Never Hear Thy Sweet 甜的 Chirrup More many Alas.”  There was one where a young lady 女士 was at a window 窗 looking up at the moon 月亮, and tears 撕裂；泪 running down her cheeks 脸颊; and she had an open letter 信 in one hand with black sealing 封上，海豹 wax 蜡 showing on one edge 边 of it, and she was mashing 糊状物 a locket with a chain 链子 to it against her mouth 口, and underneath 在...之下 the picture 照片 it said “And Art Thou Gone Yes Thou Art Gone Alas.”  These was all nice 美好的 pictures 照片, I reckon 估计, but I didn’t some‧how 某种方法 seem to take to them, because if ever I was down a little they always give me the fan 扇子-tods.  Everybody was sorry 对不起的 she died 6, because she had laid out a lot 11 more many of these pictures to do, and a body could see by what she had done what they had lost 失去的.  But I reckoned 估计 that with her disposition 性格 she was having a better well time in the grave‧yard 墓地.  She was at work on what they said was her greatest picture 照片 when she took sick 9, and every day and every night it was her prayer 祈祷 to be allowed 允许 to live till she got get it done, but she never got get the chance 9.  It was a picture of a young woman in a long white gown 袍, standing on the rail 围栏；钢轨 of a bridge 桥 all ready to jump 跳 off, with her hair 头发 all down her back, and looking up to the moon 8, with the tears 撕裂；泪 running down her face, and she had two arms 手臂 folded 折叠 across her breast 乳房, and two arms stretched 伸展 out in front 7, and two more many reaching 到达 up towards the moon 9—and the idea 6 was to see which pair 一副 would look best 最好, and then scratch 刮 out all the other arms 6; but, as I was saying, she died 7 before she got get her mind made up, and now they kept keep this picture 6 over the head of the bed 10 in her room, and every time her birth‧day 生日 come they hung 7 flowers 花 on it.  Other times it was hid 隐藏:hide with a little curtain 窗帘.  The young woman in the picture 7 had a kind of a nice 8 sweet 甜的 face, but there was so many arms 7 it made her look too spidery, seemed to me.

This young girl kept keep a scrap 废料- book 书 when she was alive 活的；有生命的, and used to paste 粘贴；面团 obituaries 讣告 and accidents 意外事件 and cases of patient 有耐性的 suffering 受痛苦 in it out of the Presbyterian Observer, and write poetry 诗歌 after them out of her own head. It was very good poetry 诗歌. This is what she wrote write about a boy by the name of Stephen Dowling Bots that fell 落下:fall down a well and was drownded:

ODE TO STEPHEN DOWLING BOTS, DEC’D

If Emmeline Grangerford could make poetry 诗歌 like that before she was four‧teen 十四, there ain’t no telling what she could a done by and by.  Buck said she could rattle 霸王鞭 off poetry 诗歌 like nothing.  She didn’t ever have to stop 停止 to think.  He said she would slap 拍击 down a line, and if she couldn’t find anything to rhyme 韵 with it would just scratch 刮 it out and slap 拍击 down another one, and go ahead 10. She warn’t particular 特别的; she could write about anything you choose 挑选 to give her to write about just so it was sadful. Every time a man died 8, or a woman died 9, or a child died, she would be on hand with her “tribute 贡” before he was cold 寒冷的.  She called them tributes 贡. The neighbors 邻居 said it was the doctor 医生 first, then Emmeline, then the under‧take 承担—the under‧take 承担 never got get in ahead 11 of Emmeline but once, and then she hung 8 fire on a rhyme 韵 for the dead person’s name, which was Whistler.  She warn’t ever the same after that; she never complained 抱怨, but she kinder pined 松树 away and did not live long.  Poor 9 thing, many’s the time I made myself 我 go up to the little room that used to be hers and get out her poor 10 old scrap 废料- book 书 and read in it when her pictures 6 had been aggravating 加剧 me and I had soured 有酸味的 on her a little.  I liked all that family, dead ones and all, and warn’t going to let anything come between us.  Poor 11 Emmeline made poetry 诗歌 about all the dead people when she was alive 活的；有生命的, and it didn’t seem right that there warn’t nobody to make some about her now she was gone; so I tried to sweat 流汗 out a verse 诗 or two myself 我, but I couldn’t seem to make it go some‧how 某种方法.  They kept keep Emmeline’s room trim 修剪 and nice 9, and all the things fixed 7 in it just the way she liked to have them when she was alive 活的；有生命的, and nobody ever slept 睡:sleep there.  The old lady 女士 took care 关心 of the room her‧self 她自己, though there was plenty 丰富 of niggers, and she sewed 缝:sew there a good deal 很多；对付 and read her Bible there mostly.

Well, as I was saying about the parlor 客厅, there was beautiful 美丽 curtains 窗帘 on the windows 窗:  white, with pictures 7 painted 描绘；颜料 on them of castles 城堡 with vines 藤蔓 all down the walls 墙, and cattle 牛 coming down to drink 喝（酒）.  There was a little old piano 钢琴, too, that had tin 锡 pans 平底锅 in it, I reckon 估计, and nothing was ever so lovely 可爱的 as to hear the young ladies 女士 sing 唱 “The Last Link 链接 is Broken 破碎的” and play “The Battle 与…作战 of Prague” on it.  The walls 墙 of all the rooms was plastered 灰泥, and most many had carpets 地毯 on the floors 地面, and the whole 7 house was white‧wash 撇清 on the outside 8.

It was a double 双的 house, and the big open place betwixt them was roofed 屋顶 and floored 地面, and sometimes the table 8 was set there in the middle of the day, and it was a cool 冷静的；酷, comfort‧able 舒服；自在 place.  Nothing couldn’t be better well.  And warn’t the cooking 烹调 good, and just bushels of it too!

CHAPTER 章节 XVIII.

COL.  Grangerford was a gentle‧man 先生, you see.  He was a gentleman all over; and so was his family.  He was well born 生；熊:bear, as the saying is, and that’s worth 7 as much in a man as it is in a horse 马, so the Widow 9 Douglas said, and nobody ever denied 拒绝 that she was of the first aristocracy 贵族 in our town; and pap he always said it, too, though he warn’t no more many quality 质量 than a mudcat himself.  Col.  Grangerford was very tall 身高；高的 and very slim 瘦, and had a darkish-paly 苍白的 complex‧ion 肤色, not a sign 10 of red 红色的 in it any‧where 任何地方; he was clean 清理；清洁的 shaved 剃须 every morning 7 all over his thin 薄的 face, and he had the thinnest 薄的 kind of lips 嘴唇, and the thinnest kind of nostrils 鼻孔, and a high nose 鼻子, and heavy 厚实；重的 eye‧brow 眉, and the blackest 黑色 kind of eyes, sunk 淹没:sink so deep 8 back that they seemed like they was looking out of caverns at you, as you may say.  His fore‧head 前额 was high, and his hair 头发 was black and straight 7 and hung 9 to his shoulders 肩膀. His hands was long and thin 薄的, and every day of his life he put on a clean 清理；清洁的 shirt 衬衫 and a full 8 suit 一套外衣 from head to foot made out of linen 麻布 so white it hurt 损害 your eyes to look at it; and on Sundays he wore 穿着:wear a blue 蓝色 tail 尾- coat 上衣 with brass 黄铜 buttons 按钮 on it.  He carried 运送；支撑 a mahogany 桃花心木 cane 甘蔗 with a silver 银 head to it.  There warn’t no frivolishness about him, not a bit 8, and he warn’t ever loud 响亮的.  He was as kind as he could be—you could feel that, you know, and so you had confidence 信心.  Sometimes he smiled 微笑, and it was good to see; but when he straightened 变直 himself up like a liberty 自由-pole 极, and the lightning 闪电 begun begin to flicker 闪烁 out from under his eye‧brow 眉, you wanted to climb 攀登 a tree 树 first, and find out what the matter was after‧ward 之后.  He didn’t ever have to tell anybody to mind their manners 方式—everybody was always good-mannered 方式 where he was.  Everybody loved 爱 to have him around, too; he was sun‧shine 阳光 most many always—I mean he made it seem like good weather 天气.  When he turned into a cloud‧bank 云‧银行；岸 it was awful 糟糕的 dark for half a minute, and that was enough; there wouldn’t nothing go wrong 有毛病的 again for a week.

When him and the old lady 女士 come down in the morning 8 all the family got get up out of their chairs 椅子 and give them good-day, and didn’t set down again till they had set down.  Then Tom and Bob went to the side‧board 边；面‧板，上船 where the decanter was, and mixed 混合 a glass 玻璃 of bitters 苦的 and handed it to him, and he held hold it in his hand and waited 7 till Tom’s and Bob’s was mixed, and then they bowed 弓 and said, “Our duty 职责 to you, sir 11, and madam 夫人;” and they bowed the least 最小的 bit 9 in the world and said thank 谢谢 you, and so they drank 喝（酒）:drink, all three, and Bob and Tom poured 淋；倒 a spoonful of water on the sugar 食糖 and the mite of whisky 威士忌酒 or apple 苹果 brandy 白兰地 in the bottom 11 of their tumblers, and give it to me and Buck, and we drank to the old people too.

Bob was the oldest and Tom next— tall 身高；高的, beautiful 美丽 men with very broad 宽阔的 shoulders 肩膀 andbrown 棕色的 faces, and long black hair 头发 and black eyes.  They dressed 衣服 in white linen 麻布 from head to foot, like the old gentle‧man 先生, and wore 穿着:wear broad 宽阔的 Panama hats 帽子.

Then there was Miss Charlotte; she was twenty 二十-five, and tall 身高；高的 and proud 自豪的 and grand 宏大的, but as good as she could be when she warn’t stirred 搅动 up; but when she was she had a look that would make you wilt in your tracks 小路, like her father 父亲.  She was beautiful 美丽.

So was her sister 姐妹, Miss Sophia, but it was a different 6 kind.  She was gentle 温和的 and sweet 甜的 like a dove 鸽子, and she was only twenty 二十.

Each person had their own nigger to wait 9 on them—Buck too.  My nigger had a monstrous 滔天 easy time, because I warn’t used to having anybody do anything for me, but Buck’s was on the jump 跳 most many of the time.

This was all there was of the family now, but there used to be more many—three sons 儿子; they got get killed; and Emmeline that died.

The old gentle‧man 先生 owned a lot of farms 农场 and over a hundred 百 niggers. Sometimes a stack 堆 of people would come there, horse‧back 马背, from ten 十 or fifteen 十五 mile around, and stay 11 five or six 9 days, and have such junketings round 圆形的；围绕 about and on the river, and dances 跳舞 and picnics 野餐 in the woods day‧time 白天, and balls 球 at the house nights.  These people was mostly kinfolks of the family.  The men brought bring their guns 枪 with them.  It was a hand‧some 英俊 lot of quality 质量, I tell you.

There was another clan 氏族 of aristocracy 贵族 around there—five or six families—mostly of the name of Shepherdson.  They was as high-toned 音 and well born 生；熊:bear and rich 10 and grand 宏大的 as the tribe 部落 of Grangerfords.  The Shepherdsons and Grangerfords used the same steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 landing 陆地；着陆, which was about two mile above 6 our house; so sometimes when I went up there with a lot of our folks 民间 I used to see a lot of the Shepherdsons there on their fine 好的 horses 马.

One day Buck and me was away out in the woods hunting 打猎, and heard hear a horse 马 coming.  We was crossing 穿过；十字 the road 路.  Buck says:

“Quick 8!   Jump 跳 for the woods!”

We done it, and then peeped 窥视 down the woods through the leaves.  Pretty soon a splendid 壮观的 young man come galloping 驰骋 down the road, setting his horse 马 easy and looking like a soldier 士兵.  He had his gun across his pommel.  I had seen see him before.  It was young Harney Shepherdson.  I heard hear Buck’s gun go off at my ear 耳朵, and Harney’s hat 帽子 tumbled 下跌 off from his head.  He grabbed 用手抓 his gun and rode 乘:ride straight 8 to the place where we was hid 8.  But we didn’t wait.  We started through the woods on a run.  The woods warn’t thick 11, so I looked over my shoulder 肩膀 to dodge 躲闪 the bullet 子弹, and twice 两次 I seen see Harney cover 覆盖 Buck with his gun; and then he rode away the way he come—to get his hat 帽子, I reckon 估计, but I couldn’t see.  We never stopped 7 running till we got get home.  The old gentle‧man 先生’s eyes blazed 火焰 a minute—‘twas pleasure 愉快, mainly 通常地；主要地；大部分地, I judged—then his face sort 分类 of smoothed 光滑的 down, and he says, kind of gentle 温和的:

“I don’t like that shooting 射击；拍摄 from behind a bush 灌木.  Why didn’t you step 步；走 into the road 路, my boy?”

“The Shepherdsons don’t, father 6.  They always take advantage 有利条件.”

Miss Charlotte she held hold her head up like a queen 女王 while Buck was telling his tale 故事，不实之词, and her nostrils 鼻孔 spread 8 and her eyes snapped 卡.  The two young men looked dark, but never said nothing.  Miss Sophia she turned pale 苍白的, but the color 颜色 come back when she found find the man warn’t hurt 损害.

Soon as I could get Buck down by the corn 玉米-cribs under the trees 7 by ourselves 我们自己, I says:

“Did you want to kill 杀死… him, Buck?”

“Well, I bet I did.”

“What did he do to you?”

“Him?  He never done nothing to me.”

“Well, then, what did you want to kill him for?”

“Why, nothing—only it’s on account 账；解释 of the feud 世仇.”

“What’s a feud 世仇?”

“Why, where was you raised 提升；种?  Don’t you know what a feud 世仇 is?”

“Never heard hear of it before—tell me about it.”

“Well,” says Buck, “a feud 世仇 is this way:  A man has a quarrel 争吵 with another man, and kills 杀死… him; then that other man’s brother 兄弟 kills him; then the other brothers 兄弟, on both sides, goes for one another; then the cousins 堂兄妹 chip 芯片 in—and by and by everybody’s killed off, and there ain’t no more many feud 世仇.  But it’s kind of slow, and takes a long time.”

“Has this one been going on long, Buck?”

“Well, I should reckon 估计!  It started thirty 三十 year ago 以前, or som’ers along there.  There was trouble 10 ‘bout 回合 something, and then a law‧suit 诉讼 to settle 解决；定居 it; and the suit 一套外衣 went agin one of the men, and so he up and shot the man that won the suit—which he would naturally 自然地 do, of course.  Anybody would.”

“What was the trouble 11 about, Buck?—land 7?”

“I reckon 估计 maybe—I don’t know.”

“Well, who done the shooting 射击；拍摄?  Was it a Grangerford or a Shepherdson?”

“Laws, how do I know?  It was so long ago 6.”

“Don’t anybody know?”

“Oh, yes, pa knows, I reckon 估计, and some of the other old people; but they don’t know now what the row 行 was about in the first place.”

“Has there been many killed, Buck?”

“Yes; right smart 聪明 chance 10 of funerals 葬礼.  But they don’t always kill 7.  Pa’s got get a few buckshot in him; but he don’t mind it ‘cuz he don’t weigh 称重 much, anyway 12.  Bob’s been carved 雕刻 up some with a bowie, and Tom’s been hurt 损害 once or twice 两次.”

“Has anybody been killed this year, Buck?”

“Yes; we got get one and they got get one.  ‘Bout three months 月 ago 7 my cousin 堂兄妹 Bud, four‧teen 十四 year old, was riding 乘 through the woods on t’other side of the river, and didn’t have no weapon 武器 with him, which was blame’ foolishness, and in a lone‧some 孤单‧一些 place he hears a horse 马 a-coming behind him, and sees old Baldy Shepherdson a-linkin’ after him with his gun in his hand and his white hair 7 a- flying 飞；苍蝇 in the wind 风; and ‘stead of jumping 跳 off and taking to the brush 刷子, Bud ‘ lowed 低的 he could out-run him; so they had it, nip 掐 and tuck 掖, for five mile or more many, the old man a- gaining 获得 all the time; so at last Bud seen see it warn’t any use, so he stopped 8 and faced around so as to have the bullet 子弹 holes 洞 in front 8, you know, and the old man he rode 乘:ride up and shot him down.  But he didn’t git much chance 11 to enjoy 享有 his luck, for inside 里面的 of a week our folks 民间 laid him out.”

“I reckon 估计 that old man was a coward 胆小鬼, Buck.”

“I reckon 估计 he warn’t a coward.  Not by a blame’ sight.  There ain’t a coward amongst 15 them Shepherdsons—not a one.  And there ain’t no cowards amongst 16 the Grangerfords either 任一个.  Why, that old man kep’ up his end in a fight 战斗 one day for half an hour 9 against three Grangerfords, and come out winner 获胜者；冠军.  They was all a-horse‧back 马背; he lit light off of his horse 马 and got get behind a little wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆, and kep’ his horse 7 before him to stop 6 the bullets 子弹; but the Grangerfords stayed 6 on their horses 马 and cape‧red 海角；斗篷‧红色的 around the old man, and peppered 胡椒 away at him, and he peppered 胡椒 away at them.  Him and his horse 8 both went home pretty leaky and crippled 削弱, but the Grangerfords had to be fetched 取 home—and one of ‘em was dead, and another died the next day.  No, sir 12; if a body’s out hunting 打猎 for cowards he don’t want to fool away any time amongst 17 them Shepherdsons, becuz they don’t breed 养育；繁殖 any of that kind.”

Next Sunday we all went to church, about three mile, everybody a-horse‧back 马背. The men took their guns 6 along, so did Buck, and kept keep them between their knees 7 or stood stand them handy 便利 against the wall 墙.  The Shepherdsons done the same.  It was pretty ornery preaching 说教—all about brotherly 兄弟 love 爱, and such-like tiresomeness; but everybody said it was a good sermon 讲道, and they all talked it over going home, and had such a powerful 强大 lot to say about faith 信用 and good works and free grace 优雅；惠赐 and preforeordestination, and I don’t know what all, that it did seem to me to be one of the roughest 粗糙的 Sundays I had run across yet.

About an hour after dinner 7 everybody was dozing around, some in their chairs 椅子 and some in their rooms, and it got get to be pretty dull 钝的；没兴趣.  Buck and a dog 10 was stretched 伸展 out on the grass 草 in the sun 10 sound asleep 9.  I went up to our room, and judged I would take a nap 小憩 myself 我.  I found find that sweet 甜的 Miss Sophia standing in her door, which was next to ours, and she took me in her room and shut 关闭 the door very soft 软的, and asked me if I liked her, and I said I did; and she asked me if I would do something for her and not tell anybody, and I said I would.  Then she said she’d forgot 忘记:forget her Testament, and left it in the seat 席位 at church between two other books 书, and would I slip 滑 out quiet 清静的 and go there and fetch 取 it to her, and not say nothing to nobody.  I said I would. Says I to myself 我, something’s up; it ain’t natural 自然 for a girl to be in such a sweat 流汗 about a Testament.  So I give it a shake 摇晃, and out drops 放下；滴；掉 a little piece of paper 纸；报纸 with “HALF-PAST 6 TWO” wrote write on it with a pencil 铅笔.  I ransacked it, but couldn’t find anything else 11.  I couldn’t make anything out of that, so I put the paper in the book 6 again, and when I got get home and upstairs 楼上 there was Miss Sophia in her door waiting 等候 for me.  She pulled 拉 me in and shut 关闭 the door; then she looked in the Testament till she found find the paper, and as soon as she read it she looked glad 8; and before a body could think she grabbed 用手抓 me and give me a squeeze 挤, and said I was the best 最好 boy in the world, and not to tell anybody.  She was mighty 威武 red 红色的 in the face for a minute, and her eyes lighted light up, and it made her powerful 强大 pretty.  I was a good deal 很多；对付 astonished 使惊讶, but when I got get my breath 呼吸 I asked her what the paper 纸；报纸 was about, and she asked me if I had read it, and I said no, and she asked me if I could read writing, and I told tell her “no, only coarse 粗鄙的-hand,” and then she said the paper warn’t anything but a book 7-mark 斑点；标注 to keep her place, and I might go and play now.

I went off down to the river, studying over this thing, and pretty soon I noticed 注意 that my nigger was following along behind.  When we was out of sight of the house he looked back and around a second, and then comes a-running, and says:

“Mars Jawge, if you’ll come down into de swamp 沼泽 I’ll show you a whole 8 stack 堆 o’ water-moccasins.”

Thinks I, that’s mighty 威武 curious 好奇的; he said that yesterday 昨天.  He oughter 应当 know a body don’t love 爱 water-moccasins enough to go around hunting 打猎 for them. What is he up to, anyway 13?  So I says:

“All right; trot 小跑 ahead.”

I followed a half a mile; then he struck out over the swamp 沼泽, and waded 涉 ankle 踝 deep 9 as much as another half-mile.  We come to a littleflat 平的；公寓 piece of land 8 which was dry 干燥 and very thick with trees 8 and bushes 灌木 and vines 藤蔓, and he says:

“You shove 推 right in dah jist a few steps 步；走, Mars Jawge; dah’s whah dey is. I’s seed 种子 ‘m befo’; I don’t k’yer to see ‘em no mo’.”

Then he slopped right along and went away, and pretty soon the trees 9 hid 9 him.  I poked 戳 into the place a-ways and come to a little open patch 补丁 as big as a bed‧room 卧室 all hung 10 around with vines 藤蔓, and found find a man laying there asleep 10—and, by jings, it was my old Jim!

I waked 6 him up, and I reckoned 估计 it was going to be a grand 宏大的 surprise 使惊奇 to him to see me again, but it warn’t.  He nearly cried 哭，叫喊 he was so glad 9, but he warn’t surprised 使惊奇.  Said he swum 游泳:swim along behind me that night, and heard hear me yell 叫喊 every time, but dasn’t answer, because he didn’t want nobody to pick 挑选 him up and take him into slavery 奴隶制度 again.  Says he:

“I got get hurt 8 a little, en 恩 couldn’t swim 游泳 fas’, so I wuz a considable ways behine you towards de las’; when you landed 陆地；着陆 I reck’ned I could ketch up wid you on de lan’ ‘dout havin’ toshout 呼喊 at you, but when I see dat house I begin to go slow.  I ‘uz off too fur 毛皮 to hear what dey say to you—I wuz ‘fraid o’ de dogs 狗; but when it ‘uz all quiet 清静的 agin I knowed you’s in de house, so I struck out for de woods to wait for day.  Early in de mawnin’ some er de niggers come along, gwyne to de fields 田, en 恩 dey tuk me en 恩 showed show me dis place, whah de dogs 6 can’t track 小路 me on accounts 账；解释 o’ de water, en 恩 dey brings me truck 9 to eat every night, en 恩 tells me how you’s a-gitt’n along.”

“Why didn’t you tell my Jack to fetch 取 me here sooner 立刻, Jim?”

“Well, ‘twarn’t no use to ‘sturb you, Huck, tell we could do sumfn—but we’s all right now.  I ben 本 a-buyin’ pots 罐 en 恩 pans 平底锅 en 恩 vittles, as I got get a chanst, en 恩 a-patchin’ up de raf’ nights when—”

“What raft 筏, Jim?”

“Our ole raf’.”

“You mean to say our old raft 筏 warn’t smashed 粉碎 all to flinders?”

“No, she warn’t.  She was tore 撕裂；泪:tear up a good deal 很多；对付—one en 恩’ of her was; but dey warn’t no great harm 损害 done, on’y our traps 6 was mos’ all los’.  Ef we hadn’ dive 潜水’ so deep 10 en 恩 swum 游泳:swim so fur 毛皮 under water, en 恩 de night hadn’ ben 本 so dark, en 恩 we warn’t so sk’yerd, en 恩 ben 本 sich punkin-heads, as de sayin’ is, we’d a seed 种子 de raf’.  But it’s jis’ as well we didn’t, ‘kase now she’s all fixed 8 up agin mos’ as good as new, en 恩 we’s got get a new lot o’ stuff 塞满；材料, in de place o’ what ‘uz los’.”

“Why, how did you get hold of the raft 筏 again, Jim—did you catch 8 her?”

“How I gwyne to ketch her en 恩 I out in de woods?  No; some er de niggers foun’ her ketched on a snag 钉子 along heah in de ben 本’, en 恩 dey hid 10 her in a crick ‘mongst de willows 柳, en 恩 dey wuz so much jawin’ ‘bout 回合 which un ‘um she b’long to de mos’ dat I come to heah ‘bout 回合 it pooty soon, so I ups en 恩 settles 解决；定居 de trouble by tellin’ ‘um she don’t b’long to none 没有人 uv um, but to you en 恩 me; en 恩 I ast ‘m if dey gwyne to grab 用手抓 a young white genlman’s propaty, en 恩 git a hid 11’n for it?  Den I gin 杜松子酒 ‘m ten 十 cents 8 apiece, en 恩 dey ‘uz mighty 威武 well satisfied 使满意, en 恩 wisht some mo’ raf’s ‘ud come along en 恩 make ‘m rich 11 agin. Dey’s mighty 威武 good to me, dese niggers is, en 恩 what‧ever 无论什么 I wants ‘m to do fur 毛皮 me I doan’ have to ast ‘m twice 两次, honey 蜜糖.  Dat Jack’s a good nigger, en 恩 pooty smart 聪明.”

“Yes, he is.  He ain’t ever told tell me you was here; told tell me to come, and he’d show me a lot of water-moccasins.  If anything happens 发生 he ain’t mixed 混合 up in it.  He can say he never seen see us together 9, and it ‘ll be the truth 真理.”

I don’t want to talk much about the next day.  I reckon 估计 I’ll cut 7 it pretty short 短的.  I waked 7 up about dawn 黎明, and was a-going to turn over and go to sleep 9 again when I noticed 注意 how still it was—didn’t seem to be anybodystirring 搅动.  That warn’t usual.  Next I noticed 6 that Buck was up and gone. Well, I gets up, a-wondering 琢磨；奇妙, and goes down stairs 楼梯—nobody around; everything as still as a mouse 老鼠.  Just the same outside 9.  Thinks I, what does it mean?  Down by the wood 木材；树林- pile 堆 I comes across my Jack, and says:

“What’s it all about?”

Says he:

“Don’t you know, Mars Jawge?”

“No,” says I, “I don’t.”

“Well, den 巢穴, Miss Sophia’s run off! ‘ deed 行为 she has.  She run off in de night some time—nobody don’t know jis’ when; run off to get married 结婚 to dat young Harney Shepherdson, you know—leastways, so dey ‘spec 规范.  De fambly foun’ it out ‘bout 回合 half an hour ago 8—maybe a little mo’—en 恩’ I tell you dey warn’t no time los’.  Sich another hurryin’ up guns 7 en 恩 hosses you never see!  De women folks 民间 has gone for to stir 搅动 up de relations 关系, en 恩 ole Mars Saul en 恩 de boys tuck 掖 dey guns 8 en 恩 rode 乘:ride up de river road 7 for to try to ketch dat young man en 恩 kill 8 him ‘fo’ he kin 亲属 git acrost de river wid Miss Sophia.  I reck’n dey’s gwyne to be mighty 威武 rough 粗糙的 times.”

“Buck went off ‘thout waking 醒 me up.”

“Well, I reck’n he did!  Dey warn’t gwyne to mix 混合 you up in it.  Mars Buck he loaded 负荷 up his gun en 恩 ‘ lowed 低的 he’s gwyne to fetch 取 home a Shepherdson or bust 胸围. Well, dey’ll be plenty 丰富 un ‘m dah, I reck’n, en 恩 you bet you he’ll fetch 取 one ef he gits a chanst.”

I took up the river road 8 as hard as I could put.  By and by I begin to hear guns 9 a good ways off.  When I come in sight of the log 14 store 商店 and the wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆 where the steamboats lands 陆地；着陆 I worked along under the trees and brush 刷子 till I got get to a good place, and then I clumb up into the forks 叉 of a cotton‧wood 棉‧木材；树林 that was out of reach 到达, and watched 8.  There was a wood 木材；树林-rank 排列 four foot high a little ways in front 9 of the tree 树, and first I was going to hide 隐藏 behind that; but maybe it was luckier 幸运 I didn’t.

By and by the men stopped 9 cavorting around and yelling 叫喊.  They started riding 乘 towards the store 商店; then up gets one of the boys, draws 绘画 a steady 稳定的 bead 珠子 over the wood 8-rank 排列, and drops 放下；滴；掉 one of them out of his saddle 马鞍.  All the men jumped 7 off of their horses 6 and grabbed 用手抓 the hurt 9 one and started to carry 运送；支撑 him to the store 商店; and that minute the two boys started on the run.  They got get half way to the tree 7 I was in before the men noticed 7. Then the men see them, and jumped 8 on their horses 7 and took out after them.  They gained 获得 on the boys, but it didn’t do no good, the boys had too good a start; they got get to the wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆 that was in front of my tree 8, and slipped 8 in behind it, and so they had the bulge 凸 on the men again. One of the boys was Buck, and the other was a slim 瘦 young chap 皴裂 about nine‧teen 十九 years old.

The men ripped 安息 around awhile 一会儿, and then rode 乘:ride away.  As soon as they was out of sight I sung 唱:sing out to Buck and told tell him.  He didn’t know what to make of my voice 嗓音 coming out of the tree 9 at first.  He was awful 糟糕的 surprised 使惊奇.  He told tell me to watch 钟表；注视 out sharp 敏锐的 and let him know when the men come in sight again; said they was up to some devilment or other—wouldn’t be gone long.  I wished 希望 I was out of that tree 10, but I dasn’t come down.  Buck begun begin to cry 哭，叫喊 and rip 安息, and ‘ lowed 低的 that him and his cousin 堂兄妹 Joe (that was the other young chap 皴裂) would make up for this day yet.  He said his father 7 and his two brothers 兄弟 was killed, and two or three of the enemy 仇敌.  Said the Shepherdsons laid for them in ambush 伏击.  Buck said his father 8 and brothers ought 应当 to waited 8 for their relations 关系—the Shepherdsons was too strong 强的 for them.  I asked him what was become of young Harney and Miss Sophia.  He said they’d got get across the river and was safe 9.  I was glad 10 of that; but the way Buck did take on because he didn’t manage 使用 to kill 9 Harney that day he shot at him—I hain’t ever heard hear anything like it.

I judged that that piece of paper 纸；报纸 meant mean that Miss Sophia was to meet Harney some‧where 某处 at half-past 8 two and run off; and I judged I ought 应当 to told tell her father 9 about that paper and the curious 好奇的 way she acted, and then maybe he would a locked 锁 her up, and this awful 糟糕的 mess 不整洁；弄乱 wouldn’t ever happened 6.

When I got get down out of the tree I crept 爬行:creep along down the river bank a piece, and found find the two bodies 身体 laying in the edge 7 of the water, and tugged 拖船 at them till I got get them ashore 岸上; then I covered 覆盖 up their faces, and got get away as quick 9 as I could.  I cried 哭，叫喊 a little when I was covering 覆盖 up Buck’s face, for he was mighty 威武 good to me.

It was just dark now.  I never went near the house, but struck through the woods and made for the swamp 沼泽.  Jim warn’t on his island, so I tramped 流浪汉 off in a hurry 9 for the crick, and crowded 人群；拥挤 through the willows 柳, red 红色的- hot 热的 to jump 跳 aboard 船上 and get out of that awful 糟糕的 country.  The raft 筏 was gone!  My souls 灵魂, but I was scared 惊恐!  I couldn’t get my breath 呼吸 for most many a minute. Then I raised 提升；种 a yell 叫喊.  A voice 嗓音 not twenty 二十-five foot from me says:

“Good lan’! is dat you, honey 蜜糖?  Doan’ make no noise 噪音.”

It was Jim’s voice 6—nothing ever sounded 声音 so good before.  I run along the bank a piece and got get aboard 船上, and Jim he grabbed 6 me and hugged 拥抱 me, he was so glad 11 to see me.  He says:

“Laws bless 祝福 you, chile, I ‘uz right down sho’ you’s dead agin.  Jack’s been heah; he say he reck’n you’s ben 本 shot, kase you didn’ come home no mo’; so I’s jes’ dis minute a star‧tin 星‧锡’ de raf’ down towards de mouf er de crick, so’s to be all ready for to shove 推 out en 恩 leave soon as Jack comes agin en 恩 tells me for certain you is dead.  Lawsy, I’s mighty 威武 glad 12 to git you back again, honey 蜜糖.”

I says:

“All right—that’s mighty 威武 good; they won’t find me, and they’ll think I’ve been killed, and floated 漂浮 down the river—there’s something up there that ‘ll help them think so—so don’t you lose 失去 no time, Jim, but just shove 推 off for the big water as fast as ever you can.”

I never felt feel easy till the raft 筏 was two mile below there and out in the middle of the Mississippi.  Then we hung 11 up our signal 信号 lantern 灯笼, and judged that we was free and safe 10 once more many.  I hadn’t had a bite 咬 to eat since yesterday 昨天, so Jim he got get out some corn 7-dodgers and butter‧milk 黄油‧奶, and pork 猪肉 and cabbage 卷心菜 and greens 绿色的—there ain’t nothing in the world so good when it’s cooked 烹调 right—and whilst 同时 I eat my supper 晚饭 we talked and had a good time.  I was powerful 强大 glad 13 to get away from the feuds 世仇, and so was Jim to get away from the swamp 沼泽.  We said there warn’t no home like a raft 筏, after all.  Other places do seem so cramped 抽筋 up and smothery, but a raft 筏 don’t.  You feel mighty 威武 free and easy and comfort‧able 舒服；自在 on a raft 筏.
