St. Petersburgh, Dec. 11th, 17—

TO Mrs. Saville, England

You will rejoice 欢庆 to hear that no disaster 灾难，大祸 has accompanied 陪 the commencement 开始 of an enterprise 企业 which you have regarded 认为 with such evil 邪恶的 forebodings. I arrived 到达 here yesterday 昨天, and my first task 任务 is to assure 向…保证；肯定地说 my dear 亲爱的 sister 姐妹 of my welfare 津贴，福利 and increasing 增加 confidence 信心 in the success 成功 of my under‧take 承担.

I am already 早已；已经 far north 北方 of London, and as I walk 走；步行同道 in the streets 街 of Petersburgh, I feel a cold 寒冷的 northern 北方的 breeze 微风 play upon my cheeks 脸颊, which braces 支撑 my nerves 神经 and fills 装满 me with delight 快乐. Do you under‧stand 懂 this feeling? This breeze 微风, which has travelled 旅行 from the regions 地区 towards which I am advancing 往前推, gives me a fore‧taste 前面‧品尝 of those icy 冷冰冰 climes. Inspirited by this wind 风 of promise 允诺, my daydreams become more many fervent and vivid 生动. I try in vain 徒劳的 to be persuaded 说服 that the pole 极 is the seat 席位 of frost 霜 and desolation; it ever 永远；曾经 presents itself 本身 to my imagination 想像力 as the region 地区 of beauty 美好 and delight 快乐. Its productions 生产 and features 特征 may be without example 例子, as the phenomena of the heavenly 神圣的 bodies 身体 undoubtedly 无疑 are in those undiscovered solitudes 孤独. What may not be expected in a country of eternal 永恒 light? I may there discover 发现 the wondrous power which attracts 吸引 the needle 针 and may regulate 调节 a thou‧sand 千 celestial 天上 observations 意见 that require 需要；有赖于；要求 only this voyage 旅行 to render 给予 their seeming eccentricities consistent 一贯 for‧ever 永远. I shall 将要 satiate my ardent 热心 curiosity 好奇心 with the sight 视力 of a part of the world never before visited 访问, and may tread 踏 a land 陆地；着陆 never before imprinted 版本说明 by the foot 脚；英尺 of man. These are my enticements, and they are sufficient 足够 to conquer 征服 all fear 害怕 of danger 危险 or death 死亡 and to induce 促使 me to commence 开始 this laborious voyage 旅行 with the joy 喜悦 a child feels when he embarks 从事 in a little boat 小船, with his holiday 假日 mates 伴，友, on an expedition 远征 of discovery 发现 up his native 本土的 river 河. But supposing 假定 all these conjectures 推测 to be false 虚伪的, you cannot contest 比赛 the inestimable benefit 效益 which I shall 将要 confer 授予 on all man‧kind 人类, to the last generation 代, by discovering 发现 a pass‧age 通道 near the pole 极 to those countries, to reach 到达 which at present so many months 月 are requisite 必要; or by ascertaining 探明 the secret 秘密 of the magnet 磁铁, which, if at all possible, can only be effected 影响 by an under‧take 承担 such as mine 我的.

These reflections 反映 have dispelled 打消 the agitation 搅动 with which I began begin my letter 信, and I feel my heart 心 glow 辉光 with an enthusiasm 热情 which elevates 提升 me to heaven 天, for nothing contributes 有助于 so much to tranquillize the mind as a steady 稳定的 purpose 目的—a point on which the soul 灵魂 may fix 固定 its intellectual 知识分子 eye. This expedition 远征 has been the favourite dream 梦想 of my early years. I have read with ardour the accounts 账；解释 of the various 各种 voyages 旅行 which have been made in the prospect 展望 of arriving 到达 at the North 北方 Pacific Ocean 洋 through the seas 海 which surround 包围 the pole 极. You may remember 记得 that a history 历史 of all the voyages 旅行 made for purposes 目的 of discovery 发现 composed 组成 the whole 全部的 of our good Uncle 叔叔 Thomas' library 图书馆. My education 教育 was neglected 疏忽, yet I was passionately 热情 fond 喜欢的 of reading. These volumes 卷 were my study day and night, and my familiarity 熟悉 with them increased that regret 后悔 which I had felt feel, as a child, on learning 学习 that my father 父亲's dying 死亡 injunction 禁令 had forbidden 禁止:forbid my uncle 叔叔 to allow 允许 me to embark 从事 in a seafaring life.

These visions 视力 faded 褪去 when I perused, for the first time, those poets 诗人 whose 谁的 effusions entranced 入口 my soul 灵魂 and lifted 举起 it to heaven 天. I also became become a poet 诗人 and for one year lived in a paradise 天堂 of my own creation 创建; I imagined 想象 that I also might obtain 获得 a niche 壁龛 in the temple 庙 where the names of Homer and Shakespeare are consecrated. You are well acquainted 认识 with my failure 失败 and how heavily 很大，沉重地 I bore 厌倦；厌烦；生 the disappointment 失望. But just at that time I inherited 继承 the for‧tune 命运 of my cousin 堂兄妹, and my thoughts were turned into the channel 渠道 of their earlier bent 弯曲:bend.

Six 6 years have passed 走过 since I resolved 解决 on my present under‧take 承担. I can, even now, remember 记得 the hour 小时 from which I dedicated 奉献 myself 我 to this great enterprise 企业. I commenced 开始 by inuring my body 身体 to hard‧ship 苦. I accompanied 陪 the whale 鲸-fishers on several expeditions 远征 to the North 北方 Sea 海; I voluntarily 自行 endured 忍受 cold 寒冷的, famine 饥荒, thirst, and want of sleep 睡; I often worked harder 硬；困难的 than the common 普通的 sailors 水手 during the day and devoted 奉献 my nights to the study of mathematics 数学, the theory 理论 of medicine 医学, and those branches 树枝 of physical 物理 science 科学 from which a naval 海 adventurer 冒险活动 might derive 派生 the greatest practical 实践的 advantage 有利条件. Twice 两次 I actually 实际上 hired 聘用 myself 我 as an under-mate 伴，友 in a Greenland whaler 鲸, and acquitted 开释 myself 我 to admiration 钦佩. I must own I felt feel a little proud 自豪的 when my captain 船长 offered 提供 me the second dignity 尊严 in the vessel 容器 and entreated me to remain 留；剩余 with the greatest earnestness, so valuable 贵重的 did he consider my services. And now, dear 亲爱的 Margaret, do I not deserve 应受 to accomplish 完成；实现；达到；做到 some great purpose 目的? My life might have been passed 走过 in ease 轻松 and luxury 豪华, but I preferred 更喜欢 glory 光荣 to every enticement that wealth 财产 placed in my path 小路. Oh, that some encouraging 鼓励 voice 嗓音 would answer 答复 in the affirmative 肯定! My courage 勇气 and my resolution 解析度 is firm 坚固的; but my hopes 希望 fluctuate 波动, and my spirits 精神 are often depressed 压抑. I am about to proceed 继续 on a long and difficult 困难的 voyage 旅行, the emergencies 急 of which will demand 要求 all my fortitude: I am required 需要；有赖于；要求 not only to raise 提升；种 the spirits 精神 of others 别的, but some‧time 有时 to sustain 维持；遭受 my own, when theirs are failing 失败.

This is the most many favourable period 时期，时间 for travelling 旅行 in Russia. They fly 飞；苍蝇 quickly 迅速地 over the snow 雪；下雪 in their sledges; the motion 运动 is pleasant 可爱的, and, in my opinion 意见, far more many agree‧able 合适的 than that of an English 英语 stage‧coach 阶段‧教师. The cold 寒冷的 is not excessive 过度的, if you are wrapped 包 in furs 毛皮—a dress 衣服 which I have already 早已；已经 adopted 采用；收养, for there is a great difference 差别 between walking 走；步行同道 the deck 甲板 and remaining 留；剩余 seated 席位 motion‧less 运动‧少 for hours 小时, when no exercise 练习 prevents 预防 the blood 血 from actually 实际上 freezing 使结冰；不动 in your veins 静脉. I have no ambition 抱负 to lose 失去 my life on the post 邮件-road 路 between St. Petersburgh and Archangel. I shall 将要 depart 离开 for the latter 后者的 town 城镇 in a fort‧night 两星期 or three weeks; and my intention 意图 is to hire 聘用 a ship 船 there, which can easily 轻易地 be done by paying the insurance 保险 for the owner, and to engage 从事 as many sailors 水手 as I think necessary 必要的 among 之间 those who are accustomed 使习惯 to the whale 鲸-fishing 鱼. Archangel, 28th March 行军；三月, 17—

To Mrs. Saville, England

How slowly 缓慢地，慢吞吞地 the time passes 走过 here, encompassed 环绕 as I am by frost 霜 and snow 雪；下雪! Yet a second step 步；走 is taken towards my enterprise 企业. I have hired 聘用 a vessel 容器 and am occupied 占据 in collecting 收集 my sailors 水手; those whom 谁 I have already 早已；已经 engaged 从事 appear 出现 to be men on whom I can depend 依靠 and are certainly possessed 拥有 of daunt‧less 吓住‧少 courage 勇气.

But I have one want which I have never yet been able 能够的 to satisfy 使满意, and the absence 缺席 of the object 物体；反对 of which I now feel as a most many severe 严峻的 evil 邪恶的, I have no friend 朋友, Margaret: when I am glowing 辉光 with the enthusiasm 热情 of success 成功, there will be none 没有人 to participate 参加 my joy 喜悦; if I am assailed by disappointment 失望, no one will endeavour to sustain 维持；遭受 me in dejection. You may deem 认为 me romantic 浪漫, my dear 亲爱的 sister 姐妹, but I bitterly 苦的 feel the want of a friend 朋友. I have no one near me, gentle 温和的 yet courageous 勇敢, possessed 拥有 of a cultivated 耕作 as well as of a capacious mind, whose 谁的 tastes 品尝 are like my own, to approve 赞成 or amend 修改 my plans. But it is a still greater evil 邪恶的 to me that I am self 自己-educated 教育: for the first four‧teen 十四 years of my life I ran run wild 野生的 on a common 普通的 and read nothing but our Uncle 叔叔 Thomas' books 书 of voyages 旅行. At that age 年龄 I became become acquainted 认识 with the celebrated 庆祝 poets 诗人 of our own country; but it was only when it had ceased 停止 to be in my power to derive 派生 its most many important benefits 效益 from such a conviction 定罪 that I perceived 认为 the necessity 必须 of becoming acquainted 认识 with more many languages 语言 than that of my native 本土的 country. Now I am twenty 二十-eight 八 and am in reality 现实 more many illiterate 文盲 than many school‧boy 男生 of fifteen 十五. It is true 真正的 that I have thought think more many and that my daydreams are more many extended 延伸 and magnificent 华丽的, but they want (as the painters 画家 call it) KEEPING; and I greatly need a friend 朋友 who would have sense enough not to despise 讨厌 me as romantic 浪漫, and affect‧ion 感情 enough for me to endeavour to regulate 调节 my mind. Well, these are use‧less 无用 complaints 抱怨; I shall 将要 certainly find no friend on the wide 宽的 ocean 洋, nor 也不 even here in Archangel, among 之间 merchants 商人 and seamen. Yet some feelings, unallied to the dross of human 人 nature, beat 打败 even in these rugged 小块地毯 bosoms. My lieutenant 陆军中尉, for instance 例, is a man of wonderful 精彩 courage 勇气 and enterprise 企业; he is madly 疯狂的 desirous of glory 光荣, or rather, to word my phrase 短语 more many characteristically 典型, of advancement 进步 in his profession 职业. He is an Englishman, and in the midst 中间 of national 国民 and professional 专业的 prejudices 成见, unsoftened by cultivation 教养, retains 保留 some of the noblest 高尚的 endowments 天赋 of humanity 人性. But the old man decidedly 果断地 refused 拒绝, thinking himself bound 必定；跳 in honour to my friend 6, who, when he found find the father 父亲 inexorable, quitted 放弃 his country, nor 也不 returned 回转 until he heard hear that his former 以前的 mistress 情妇 was married 结婚 according 协议 to her inclinations 倾角. "What a noble 高尚的 fellow 同伴!" you will exclaim 喊叫. He is so; but then he is wholly 全 uneducated: he is as silent 沉默的 as a Turk, and a kind of ignorant 愚昧 carelessness attends 出席 him, which, while it renders 给予 his conduct 进行 the more many astonishing 使惊讶, detracts 减损 from the interest and sympathy 同情 which other‧wise 否则 he would command 命令.

Yet do not suppose 假定, because I complain 抱怨 a little or because I can conceive 构想 a consolation 安慰 for my toils 辛劳 which I may never know, that I am wavering 动摇 in my resolutions 解析度. Those are as fixed 固定 as fate 命运, and my voyage 旅行 is only now delayed 延迟 until the weather 天气 shall 6 permit 许可 my embarkation. I cannot describe 描写 to you my sensations 感觉 on the near prospect 展望 of my under‧take 承担. It is impossible 不可能的 to communicate 通信 to you a concept‧ion 概念 of the trembling 发抖 sensation 感觉, half 一半的 pleasurable 愉快的 and half fearful 可怕, with which I am preparing 准备 to depart 离开. I am going to unexplored regions 地区, to "the land 陆地；着陆 of mist 薄雾 and snow 雪；下雪," but I shall 8 kill 杀死… no albatross; therefore 因此 do not be alarmed 警告 for my safety 安全 or if I should come back to you as worn 穿着:wear and woeful as the " Ancient 古代的 Mariner." You will smile 微笑 at my allusion 典故, but I will disclose 透露 a secret 秘密. I have often attributed 特性；特质；属性 my attachment 附件 to, my passionate 多情 enthusiasm 热情 for, the dangerous 危险 mysteries 秘密 of ocean 洋 to that production 生产 of the most many imaginative 有想象力 of modern 现代的 poets 诗人. There is something at work in my soul 灵魂 which I do not under‧stand 懂. I am practically 实践的 industrious—painstaking, a work‧man 工人 to execute 执行 with perseverance and labour—but besides 而且 this there is a love 爱 for the marvellous, a belief 信 in the marvellous, intertwined 纠缠 in all my projects 项目, which hurries 赶紧 me out of the common 普通的 path‧way 路 of men, even to the wild 野生的 sea 海 and unvisited regions 地区 I am about to explore 探索；探测. But to return 回转 to dearer 亲爱的 considerations 考虑. Shall 9 I meet you again, after having traversed 横过 immense 极大的 seas 海, and returned 回转 by the most many southern 南部的 cape 海角；斗篷 of Africa or America? I dare 敢 not expect such success 成功, yet I cannot bear 生；熊 to look on the reverse 反向；倒转 of the picture 照片. Continue for the present to write to me by every opportunity 机会: I may receive 收到 your letters 信 on some occasions 机会 when I need them most many to support 支持 my spirits 精神. I love 爱 you very tenderly 纤弱的. Remember 记得 me with affect‧ion 感情, should you never hear from me again.

July 7th, 17—

To Mrs. Saville, England

My dear 亲爱的 Sister 姐妹,

I write a few lines in haste 匆忙 to say that I am safe 安全的—and well advanced 往前推 on my voyage 旅行. This letter 信 will reach 到达 England by a merchant‧man 商人‧男人 now on its home‧ward 家‧病房 voyage from Archangel; more many fortunate 侥幸的 than I, who may not see my native 本土的 land 陆地；着陆, perhaps 或许, for many years. I am, however, in good spirits 精神: my men are bold 胆大的；醒目的 and apparently 据…所知；看来；据说；听说 firm 坚固的 of purpose 目的, nor 也不 do the floating 漂浮 sheets 纸 of ice 冰 that continually 不断 pass 走过 us, indicating 表明 the dangers 危险 of the region 地区 towards which we are advancing 往前推, appear 出现 to dismay 沮丧 them. We have already 早已；已经 reached 到达 a very high latitude 纬度; but it is the height 高度 of summer 夏, and although 尽管 not so warm 暖和的 as in England, the southern 南部的 gales 大风, which blow 吹；殴打 us speedily 迅速 towards those shores 岸 which I so ardently 热心 desire 希望 to attain 达到, breathe 呼吸 a degree 度 of renovating 修复 warmth 温暖 which I had not expected.

No incidents 事件 have hitherto 迄今 befallen us that would make a figure in a letter 6. One or two stiff 严厉的 gales 大风 and the springing 春季 of a leak 泄漏 are accidents 意外事件 which experienced navigators 航海家 scarcely 缺乏的 remember 记得 to record 记录, and I shall be well content 内容 if nothing worse 更坏的 happen 发生 to us during our voyage 旅行.

Adieu, my dear 亲爱的 Margaret. Be assured 向…保证；肯定地说 that for my own sake 缘故, as well as yours, I will not rashly 皮疹 encounter 遭遇 danger 危险. I will be cool 冷静的；酷, per‧severe 持之以恒, and prudent 谨慎.

But success 成功 SHALL crown 王冠 my endeavours. Wherefore not? Thus 于是 far I have gone, tracing 跟踪 a secure 安全 way over the path‧less 小路‧少 seas 海, the very stars 星 themselves 他们自己 being 存在 witnesses 目击；目击者 and testimonies 见证 of my triumph 胜利. Why not still proceed 继续 over the untamed yet obedient 顺从的 element 元件? What can stop 停止 the determined 决心 heart 心 and resolved 解决 will of man?

August 5th, 17—

To Mrs. Saville, England

So strange 奇怪；陌生 an accident 意外事件 has happened 发生 to us that I cannot for‧bear 为‧生；熊 recording 记录 it, although 尽管 it is very probable 可能的 that you will see me before these papers 纸；报纸 can come into your possession 所有物.

Last Monday (July 31st) we were nearly surrounded 包围 by ice 冰, which closed in the ship 船 on all sides, scarcely 缺乏的 leaving her the sea 海-room in which she floated 漂浮. Our situation 处境 was some‧what 有些 dangerous 危险, especially 尤其地 as we were compassed 罗盘 round 圆形的；围绕 by a very thick 浓的 fog 多雾路段. We accordingly 于是 lay 放置 to, hoping 希望 that some change would take place in the atmosphere 大气层 and weather 天气.

About two o' clock 钟 the mist 薄雾 cleared away, and we beheld, stretched 伸展 out in every direction 方向, vast 广大 and irregular 不规则 plains 平原；明显 of ice 冰, which seemed to have no end. Some of my comrades 同志 groaned 呻吟, and my own mind began begin to grow 生长；种植 watchful with anxious 焦急的 thoughts, when a strange 奇怪；陌生 sight 视力 suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 attracted 吸引 our attention 注意 and diverted 转移 our solicitude from our own situation 处境. We perceived 认为 a low 低的 carriage 运输, fixed 固定 on a sledge and drawn 绘画:draw by dogs 狗, pass 走过 on towards the north 北方, at the distance 距离 of half 一半的 a mile 英里; a being 存在 which had the shape 形状 of a man, but apparently 据…所知；看来；据说；听说 of gigantic 巨大 stature 身材, sat 坐:sit in the sledge and guided 引路 the dogs 狗. We watched 钟表；注视 the rapid 快速的 progress 进步 of the traveller 旅行 with our telescopes 望远镜 until he was lost 失去的 among 之间 the distant 遥远的 inequalities 不等式 of the ice 冰. He was not, as the other traveller 旅行 seemed to be, a savage 野蛮人 inhabitant 居民 of some undiscovered island 岛, but a European. When I appeared 出现 on deck 甲板 the master 主人；硕士 said, "Here is our captain 船长, and he will not allow 允许 you to perish 沦 on the open sea 海."

On perceiving 认为 me, the stranger 奇怪；陌生 addressed 地址 me in English 英语, although 尽管 with a foreign 外国的 accent 口音. "Before I come on board 板，上船 your vessel 容器," said he, "will you have the kindness 善良 to inform 通知 me whither you are bound 必定；跳?"

You may conceive 构想 my astonishment 惊愕 on hearing such a question addressed 地址 to me from a man on the brink 边缘 of destruction 破坏 and to whom 谁 I should have supposed 假定 that my vessel 容器 would have been a resource 资源 which he would not have exchanged 交换 for the most many precious 宝贵的 wealth 财产 the earth 地球 can afford 买得起. I replied 回答, however, that we were on a voyage 旅行 of discovery 发现 towards the northern 北方的 pole 极.

Upon hearing this he appeared 出现 satisfied 使满意 and consented 同意 to come on board 板，上船. Good God! Margaret, if you had seen see the man who thus 于是 capitulated for his safety 安全, your surprise 使惊奇 would have been bound‧less 必定；跳‧少. Two days passed 走过 in this manner 方式 before he was able 能够的 to speak 讲, and I often feared 害怕 that his sufferings 受痛苦 had deprived 剥夺 him of under‧stand 懂. When he had in some measure 测量 recovered 恢复, I removed 去掉 him to my own cabin 舱 and attended 出席 on him as much as my duty 职责 would permit 许可. I never saw see a more many interesting creature 动物；生物: his eyes have generally an expression 表现 of wildness, and even madness 疯狂, but there are moments 瞬间 when, if anyone 任何人 per‧form 执行 an act of kindness 善良 towards him or does him any the most many trifling 琐事 service, his whole 全部的 countenance 面容 is lighted light up, as it were, with a beam 梁 of benevolence and sweetness 甜美 that I never saw see equalled 相等的. But he is generally melancholy 愁绪 and despairing 绝望, and some‧time 有时 he gnashes his teeth, as if impatient 不耐烦 of the weight 重量 of woes 荣辱与共 that oppresses 压迫 him.

When my guest 客人 was a little recovered 恢复 I had great trouble 麻烦 to keep off the men, who wished 希望 to ask him a thou‧sand 千 questions; but I would not allow 允许 him to be tormented 折磨 by their idle 无意义的 curiosity 好奇心, in a state of body 身体 and mind whose 谁的 restoration 恢复 evidently 明显地 depended 依靠 upon entire 全部的 repose. Once, however, the lieutenant 陆军中尉 asked why he had come so far upon the ice 8 in so strange 奇怪；陌生 a vehicle 车辆.

His countenance 面容 instantly 瞬间 assumed 承担 an aspect 方面 of the deepest 深的 gloom 愁云, and he replied 回答, "To seek 寻求 one who fled from me."

"And did the man whom 谁 you pursued 追求 travel 旅行 in the same fashion 时尚?"

"Yes."

"Then I fancy 想像 we have seen see him, for the day before we picked 挑选 you up we saw see some dogs 狗 drawing 绘画 a sledge, with a man in it, across 穿过 the ice 9."

This aroused 引起 the stranger 奇怪；陌生's attention 注意, and he asked a multitude 苠 of questions concerning 关心；涉及 the route 路线 which the demon 恶魔, as he called him, had pursued 追求. Soon 立刻 after, when he was alone 单独的 with me, he said, "I have, doubt‧less 毫无疑问，, excited 使兴奋 your curiosity 好奇心, as well as that of these good people; but you are too considerate to make inquiries 调查."

"Certainly; it would indeed 的确 be very impertinent and inhuman in me to trouble 麻烦 you with any inquisitiveness of mine 我的."

"And yet you rescued 营救 me from a strange 奇怪；陌生 and perilous situation 处境; you have benevolently restored 修复；使复位；使复职 me to life."

Soon 立刻 after this he inquired 打听 if I thought think that the breaking 破；断 up of the ice 10 had destroyed 破坏 the other sledge. I replied 回答 that I could not answer 答复 with any degree 度 of certainty 确定性, for the ice 11 had not broken 破碎的 until near mid‧night 午夜, and the traveller 旅行 might have arrived 到达 at a place of safety 安全 before that time; but of this I could not judge 审判. From this time a new spirit 精神 of life animated 活跃 the decaying 腐烂 frame 框架 of the stranger 奇怪；陌生. He manifested 表现 the greatest eagerness to be upon deck 甲板 to watch 钟表；注视 for the sledge which had before appeared 出现; but I have persuaded 说服 him to remain 留；剩余 in the cabin 舱, for he is far too weak 柔弱的 to sustain 维持；遭受 the rawness of the atmosphere 大气层. I have promised 允诺 that some‧one 某人 should watch 钟表；注视 for him and give him instant 瞬间 notice 注意 if any new object 物体；反对 should appear 出现 in sight 视力.

Such is my journal 日志 of what relates 相关 to this strange 奇怪；陌生 occurrence 发生 up to the present day. The stranger 奇怪；陌生 has gradually 逐步地 improved 改进 in health 健康状况 but is very silent 沉默的 and appears 出现 uneasy 不安 when anyone 任何人 except 把…除外 myself 我 enters 进入 his cabin 舱. Yet his manners 方式 are so conciliating and gentle 温和的 that the sailors 水手 are all interested in him, although 尽管 they have had very little communication 通讯 with him. For my own part, I begin to love 爱 him as a brother 兄弟, and his constant 不变 and deep 深的 grief 哀思 fills 装满 me with sympathy 同情 and compassion 同情. He must have been a noble 高尚的 creature 动物；生物 in his better well days, being 存在 even now in wreck 破坏；使遇难 so attractive 有魅力的 and amiable 可亲. I said in one of my letters 信, my dear 亲爱的 Margaret, that I should find no friend 7 on the wide 宽的 ocean 洋; yet I have found find a man who, before his spirit 精神 had been broken 破碎的 by misery 痛苦, I should have been happy 幸福的 to have possessed 拥有 as the brother 兄弟 of my heart 心.

I shall continue my journal 日志 concerning 关心；涉及 the stranger 奇怪；陌生 at intervals 间隔, should I have any fresh 新鲜的 incidents 事件 to record 记录.

August 13th, 17—

My affect‧ion 感情 for my guest 客人 increases every day. He excites 使兴奋 at once my admiration 钦佩 and my pity 怜悯 to an astonishing 使惊讶 degree 度. How can I see so noble 高尚的 a creature 动物；生物 destroyed 破坏 by misery 痛苦 without feeling the most many poignant 凄美 grief 哀思? He is so gentle 温和的, yet so wise 明智的；聪明的; his mind is so cultivated 耕作, and when he speaks 讲, although 尽管 his words are culled 扑杀 with the choicest 选择 art, yet they flow 流 with rapidity and unparalleled eloquence. He is now much recovered 恢复 from his illness 疾病 and is continually 不断 on the deck 甲板, apparently 据…所知；看来；据说；听说 watching 钟表；注视 for the sledge that preceded 优于 his own. Yet, although unhappy 不快乐, he is not so utterly 完全 occupied 占据 by his own misery 痛苦 but that he interests him‧self 他自己 deeply 深深地；极其，非常 in the projects 项目 of others 别的. He has frequently 频繁地，经常地 con‧verse 交谈 with me on mine 我的, which I have communicated 通信 to him without disguise 伪装. He entered 进入 attentively 注意的 into all my arguments 论据 in favour of my eventual 最终 success 成功 and into every minute 分 detail 详述 of the measures 测量 I had taken to secure 安全 it. I was easily 轻易地 led lead by the sympathy 同情 which he evinced to use the language 语言 of my heart 心, to give utterance 发声 to the burning 烧 ardour of my soul 灵魂 and to say, with all the fervour that warmed 暖和的 me, how gladly 高兴的 I would sacrifice 牺牲 my for‧tune 命运, my existence 存在, my every hope 希望, to the furtherance of my enterprise 企业. One man's life or death 死亡 were but a small price 价格 to pay for the acquirement of the knowledge 知识；了解 which I sought, for the dominion I should acquire 获得 and transmit 发送 over the elemental foes 敌人 of our race 赛跑. As I spoke 讲:speak, a dark 黑暗的 gloom 愁云 spread 伸开 over my listener 倾听's countenance 面容. At first I perceived 认为 that he tried to sup‧press 压制 his emotion 情感; he placed his hands before his eyes, and my voice 嗓音 quivered 颤动 and failed 失败 me as I beheld tears 撕裂；泪 trickle 潺 fast 快的 from between his fingers 手指; a groan 呻吟 burst 爆裂 from his heaving 举起 breast 乳房. I paused 暂停; at length 长度 he spoke 讲:speak, in broken 破碎的 accents 口音: "Unhappy man! Do you share 股 my madness 疯狂? Have you drunk 醉的 also of the intoxicating draught? Hear me; let me reveal 揭示 my tale 故事，不实之词, and you will dash 短跑 the cup 杯子 from your lips 嘴唇!"

Such words, you may imagine 想象, strongly 强烈 excited 使兴奋 my curiosity 好奇心; but the paroxysm of grief 哀思 that had seized 抓住 the stranger 奇怪；陌生 overcame his weakened 柔弱的:weak powers, and many hours 小时 of repose and tranquil 宁静 conversation 交谈 were necessary 必要的 to restore 修复；使复位；使复职 his composure. Having conquered 征服 the violence 暴力 of his feelings, he appeared 出现 to despise 讨厌 him‧self 他自己 for being 存在 the slave 奴隶 of passion 激情，热情；强烈情感; and quelling the dark 黑暗的 tyranny 暴政 of despair 绝望, he led lead me again to con‧verse 交谈 concerning 关心；涉及 myself 我 personally 亲自. He asked me the history 历史 of my earlier years. The tale 故事，不实之词 was quickly 迅速地 told tell, but it awakened 憬 various 各种 trains 火车；训练 of reflection 反映. I spoke 讲:speak of my desire 希望 of finding a friend 8, of my thirst for a more many intimate 亲密 sympathy 同情 with a fellow 同伴 mind than had ever 永远；曾经 fallen 落下:fall to my lot 大量；份额, and expressed 表达 my conviction 定罪 that a man could boast 自夸 of little happiness 幸福 who did not enjoy 享有 this blessing 祝福. "I agree 同意 with you," replied 回答 the stranger 6; "we are unfashioned creatures 动物；生物, but half 一半的 made up, if one wiser 明智的；聪明的, better well, dearer 亲爱的 than ourselves 我们自己—such a friend 9 ought 应当 to be—do not lend 把…借给 his aid 援助 to perfectionate our weak 柔弱的 and faulty 不完善的 natures. I once had a friend, the most many noble 高尚的 of human 人 creatures 动物；生物, and am entitled 使有资格，允许, therefore 因此, to judge 审判 respecting 尊重 friend‧ship 友情. You have hope 希望, and the world before you, and have no cause 原因；引起 for despair 绝望. But I—I have lost 失去的 every‧thing 每件事物 and cannot begin life anew 重新."

As he said this his countenance 面容 became become expressive 表现的 of a calm 镇定的, settled 解决；定居 grief 哀思 that touched 触摸 me to the heart 心. But he was silent 沉默的 and presently retired 退休 to his cabin 舱.

Even broken 破碎的 in spirit 精神 as he is, no one can feel more many deeply 深深地；极其，非常 than he does the beauties 美好 of nature. The starry sky 天（空）, the sea 7, and every sight 视力 afforded 买得起 by these wonderful 精彩 regions 地区 seem still to have the power of elevating 提升 his soul 灵魂 from earth 地球. Such a man has a double 双的 existence 存在: he may suffer 受痛苦 misery 痛苦 and be overwhelmed 压倒 by disappointments 失望, yet when he has retired 退休 into him‧self 他自己, he will be like a celestial 天上 spirit 精神 that has a halo around him, within 在内 whose 谁的 circle 圆 no grief 哀思 or folly 蠢事 ventures 企业；投机活动；商业冒险.

Will you smile 微笑 at the enthusiasm 热情 I express 表达 concerning 关心；涉及 this divine 神圣 wanderer 漫步? You would not if you saw see him. You have been tutored 导师 and refined 提炼 by books 书 and retirement 退休 from the world, and you are therefore 因此 some‧what 有些 fastidious; but this only renders 给予 you the more many fit 合适 to appreciate 欣赏 the extra‧ordinary 非凡的 merits 值得 of this wonderful 精彩 man. Sometimes 有时 I have endeavoured to discover 发现 what quality 质量 it is which he possesses 拥有 that elevates 提升 him so immeasurably above 之上 any other person I ever 永远；曾经 knew know. I believe 信任 it to be an intuitive 直观的 discernment, a quick 快的 but never- failing 失败 power of judgment 判断, a penetration 渗透 into the causes 原因；引起 of things, unequalled 不等 for clearness and precision 精确; add 增加 to this a facility 设施 of expression 表现 and a voice 嗓音 whose 谁的 varied 变化 into‧nation 腔调 are soul 灵魂-subduing 征服 music 音乐.

August 19, 17—

Yesterday 昨天 the stranger 7 said to me, "You may easily 轻易地 perceive 认为, Captain 船长 Walton, that I have suffered 受痛苦 great and unparalleled misfortunes 不幸. I had determined 决心 at one time that the memory 记忆 of these evils 邪恶的 should die 死亡 with me, but you have won 赢:win me to alter 改变 my determination 决心. You seek 寻求 for knowledge 知识；了解 and wisdom 智慧, as I once did; and I ardently 热心 hope 希望 that the gratification of your wishes 希望 may not be a serpent to sting 叮 you, as mine 我的 has been. I do not know that the relation 关系 of my disasters 灾难，大祸 will be useful 有用 to you; yet, when I reflect 反射 that you are pursuing 追求 the same course, exposing 暴露 your‧self 你自己 to the same dangers 危险 which have rendered 给予 me what I am, I imagine 想象 that you may deduce 推断 an apt 易于 moral 道德的 from my tale 故事，不实之词, one that may direct you if you succeed 成功 in your under‧take 承担 and console 安慰 you in case of failure 失败. Prepare 准备 to hear of occurrences 发生 which are usually deemed 认为 marvellous. Were we among 之间 the tamer 驯服的 scenes 场面 of nature I might fear 害怕 to encounter 遭遇 your unbelief, perhaps 或许 your ridicule 嘲笑; but many things will appear 出现 possible in these wild 野生的 and mysterious 神秘 regions 地区 which would provoke 惹 the laughter 笑 of those unacquainted with the ever 永远；曾经-varied 变化 powers of nature; nor 也不 can I doubt 怀疑 but that my tale 故事，不实之词 conveys 传达 in its series 系列 internal 内部 evidence 证据 of the truth 真理 of the events 事件 of which it is composed 组成."

You may easily 轻易地 imagine 想象 that I was much gratified 取悦 by the offered 提供 communication 通讯, yet I could not endure 忍受 that he should renew 更新 his grief 哀思 by a recital 演奏会 of his misfortunes 不幸. I felt feel the greatest eagerness to hear the promised 允诺 narrative 叙述, partly from curiosity 好奇心 and partly from a strong 强的 desire 希望 to ameliorate his fate 命运 if it were in my power. I expressed 表达 these feelings in my answer 答复.

"I thank 谢谢 you," he replied 回答, "for your sympathy 同情, but it is use‧less 无用; my fate 命运 is nearly fulfilled 履行. I wait 等候 but for one event 事件, and then I shall repose in peace 和平. I under‧stand 懂 your feeling," continued he, perceiving 认为 that I wished 希望 to interrupt 打断 him; "but you are mistaken 错误, my friend, if thus 于是 you will allow 允许 me to name you; nothing can alter 改变 my destiny 命运; listen 倾听 to my history 历史, and you will perceive 认为 how irrevocably it is determined 决心."

He then told tell me that he would commence 开始 his narrative 叙述 the next day when I should be at leisure 闲暇. This promise 允诺 drew 绘画:draw from me the warmest 暖和的 thanks 谢谢. I have resolved 解决 every night, when I am not imperatively 势在必行 occupied 占据 by my duties 职责, to record 记录, as nearly as possible in his own words, what he has related 相关 during the day. If I should be engaged 从事, I will at least 最小的 make notes 笔记. This manuscript 手稿 will doubt‧less 毫无疑问， afford 买得起 you the greatest pleasure 愉快; but to me, who know him, and who hear it from his own lips 嘴唇—with what interest and sympathy 同情 shall I read it in some future 将来的 day! Even now, as I commence 开始 my task 任务, his full 满的-toned 音 voice 嗓音 swells 膨胀；增强 in my ears 耳朵; his lustrous eyes dwell 住 on me with all their melancholy 愁绪 sweetness 甜美; I see his thin 薄的 hand raised 提升；种 in animation 动画, while the lineaments of his face are irradiated by the soul 灵魂 within 在内.

Strange 奇怪；陌生 and harrowing must be his story 故事, frightful the storm 暴风雨 which embraced 拥抱 the gallant vessel 容器 on its course and wrecked 破坏；使遇难 it— thus 于是!
